Cipro and sinemet: Hi friends I have a... - Cure Parkinson's
Cipro and sinemet
Ciprofloxacin, caused a rapid elevation in my liver enzymes (= liver damage) as well as kidneys so I had to be taken off of it and when you look at the list of potential side effects, I would tend to agree with your pharmacist!

There are many ways to treat a UTI that do not come with the same long list of side effects. For example, if the bacteria is e coli which is the most common bacterial cause for UTI's, many people are able to treat it with the supplement D-Mannose powder. It prevents the bacteria from attaching to the bladder walls and allows the bacteria to pass freely out with the urine.
Some people are able to get relief using baking soda in water or sea salt in water as the sea salt is a potent antibacterial while the baking soda has a fairly high PH which some offending bacteria can not survive in. There are tons of these natural type remedies on the web or youtube and for the most part do not carry the potential side effects of Ciprofloxacin. The other advantage to the natural remedies is that if you notice that you might be getting a UTI late on a Friday afternoon when it will be next to impossible to see your doctor, these home remedies can help you right through the weekend until you can see your doctor. Otherwise it could be a long wait in your local hospital emergency room!
Sometimes you need a powerful antibiotic like Cipro, but sometimes you don't!

I agree with Art that Cipro is a terrible choice due to potentially devastating adverse effects. If you do need to take Cipro, take magnesium separated by several hours in time to mitigate potential adverse effects. I do believe antibiotics are worthwhile for treating UTI to avoid complications. Here is a list of UTI antibiotics:
drugs.com/article/antibioti...
"What oral antibiotics are used to treat an uncomplicated UTI in women?
The following oral antibiotics are commonly used to treat most uncomplicated UTI infections (acute cystitis):
• nitrofurantoin (Furadantin, Macrobid, Macrodantin)
• fosfomycin (Monurol)
• sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim DS, Septra DS, others)
Your doctor will choose your antibiotic based on your history, type of UTI, local resistance patterns, and cost-considerations. First-line options are usually selected from nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin) and certain cephalosporins, for example cefpodoxime, cefdinir, or cefaclor may be appropriate options when first-line options cannot be used."

In the realm of home remedies, cranberry juice is worth consideration. Preferably not the highly sugared version sold in grocery stores, but made up from unsweetened concentrate which can be ordered online.
Other home remedies I tried recently on a Friday when doctor wasn’t available until Tuesday were:
Black seed oil (nigella saliva)
Mimosa pudica and formula1 from Microbe formulas. ( has vidanga, neem, triphala, clove, holarrhena, fulvic acid extract)
Berberine
Allicin
I was pretty desperate so I took some of each during the day and after about 8 hours I passed some blood and filmy, stringy mucousy stuff then after that on the next urination it was clear.
I by that stage had managed to get a doctors appointment late on the Friday and get antibiotics but by the time I took the first one I was urinating clear again and the pain had pretty much gone away so I don’t know whether it would have fixed itself with taking those things or not if I hadn’t been able to get the antibiotics.
Ps I don’t have PD, my husband does, so you would need to check each one of these things don’t affect medications if you want to try them.
The mimosa pudica is supposed to adhere to bacteria and biofilms and the other things are supposed to kill them so I think the mimosa pudica was the source of the mucousy stuff.
D Mannose is excellent for UTI. I used to have chronic UTI till I started taking D Mannose. At the first symptoms take as directed, drink water and hold it for an hour. The bacteria adheres to the D mannose and clears it out of the body
Just to be clear, d mannose and mannitol used for PD aren’t the same are they? We have plenty of mannitol but no mannose so would mannitol work?
Yes I had a UTI last year and was givin Cipro. It was Saturday morning and I went to a walk in clinic not my regular physician. I had a reaction and it is on my do not use list.
Now if a feel a UTI starting i start flushing with alkaline water, real unsweetened cranberry juice etc
