I've lost a lot of weight and my muscles, plus my skin on my body is looser, and my hair hasn't grown in length for a year.

How do we gain our weight back. I take minerals, Magnesium, boron, bee pollen. I want to take my nordic naturals cod liver pills for vitD/A and liver pills for b vitamins but it messes with cardopa/levadopa absorption even if I take 2 hours away protein stays with me for a long time. I tried one Betaine HCL for digestion protein, but it gave me heartburn.

Do you take Rytary?

akgirlsrock in reply toConnieD

No I don't like it,well I had samples, tried for a couple days felt foggy and it didn't stop my tremor, plus it gave me a weird smell in nostrils. Plus my insurance won't cover the cost.

I wondered because I found I was losing weight when I took it and looking back I think it suppressed my appetite too.

Eat more fat. 2 avocados in your smoothie. Snack on mixed nuts throughout the day. They're low in protein, high in fat and have some salt. Pour olive oil on everything you can stand -- salad and veggies. Eat peanut butter on apples and celery. Lighten up a bit on your carb restriction.

I eat meat, butter, eggs, avos,

Hi Marc, what does it mean by "Lighten up a bit on your carb restriction.?" to add or cut carb? Thanks.

MBAnderson profile image
MBAnderson in reply toTL500

I assumed she was limiting her carbohydrate intake, as many PWP do, and that she allow herself to eat more which would help her gain weight.

PS. I loosened my own carbohydrate restrictions and reduced the number of days which I intermittently fasted 18 or 20 hours and have gained 4 pounds in the past week. I could write a book on how to gain weight, although it would be a small book. "Eat more food."

Do you think bread and croisants n wheat products make PD condition worse?

MBAnderson profile image
MBAnderson in reply toTL500

Yes, I do believe bread and croissants most likely impact your progression. I don't eat bread for that reason.

I believe any foods that make your overall health better or worse, make your Parkinson's better or worse.

Dr. Dale Bredesen's therapy model for dealing with Alzheimer's and by extension Dr. Laurie Mischley's approach for Parkinson's is that our roof leaks from 15 different places and we much patch every hole -- which I interpret to mean it doesn't do much good to correct your vitamin D or B12 deficiency if you are going to be a couch potato, getting all your meals from McDonald's and otherwise ignoring the other 13 deficiencies and imbalances.

Thanks Marc. I love bread and croissants and donuts eventhough I don't eadt it often. I have to try to at least reduce intake.

You can try to use some nut butters - there is a good variety of them on the market, pick one you like and it may help you to gain some weight. In my case I like tahini (ground sesame seeds), so I keep a jar of it on the kitchen counter and when feel like having a snack mix couple of tablespoons tahini with a little bit of honey and it goes really well with a cup of tea.

You could start eating grains. A big bowl of oatmeal or oat bran, Simply Delicious and very soothing on your stomach and intestines. You can have more than one a day. Potatoes, and sweet potatoes are really good too. Beets again are delicious. In a health food section you could buy really good bread.

Ursolic acid (found in tulsi / holy basil and apple peels) is reputed to help with muscle growth.

Ergothioneine, an anti-oxidant found in mushrooms (particularly high in porcini mushrooms), can help with hair growth and overall health.

Have you tried digestive enzymes or whey protein and weight training?

faridaro profile image
faridaro in reply toLAJ12345

Agree - digestive enzymes can be great help, however not sure about whey protein as it is high in glutamate which may have adverse effect on brain (according to Russel Blaylock, MD), especially if someone has sensitivity to glutamates like myself (get headaches from MSG). Thanks, that’s interesting.

look up sarcopenia (it is something everyone should know about and endeavor to slow)

for example: webmd.com/healthy-aging/gui...

eat sufficient protein (seems like you might already be doing) + strength train = weight gain in the form of muscle (desirable)

[as opposed to eating lots of carbs and fat which leads to weight gain in the form of fat (undesirable)]

I’ve also been struggling with weight loss and muscle reduction. And I have noticed my hair is not growing nearly like it used to. I’ve tried most of the suggestions with no luck. I will keep checking the post for updates that might be helpful. It’s very frustrating and I actually get sick of eating so much. I was under weight to begin with

Amla, Indian gooseberry is an herb used in Ayurveda medicine. It is a powerful antioxidant that also promotes hair growth.

My instinct tells me that lack of hair growth is a symptom of a systemic process. PD is a mitochondrial disorder at its core which affects metabolism. These symptoms might not be PD related. I think you need to see a doctor about this.

Have you any diagnosed metabolic or protein processing disorders? Have you been worked up for endocrine disorders? You might start there first.

Is this weight loss intentional? Had you been dieting? From what weight did you top and to what weight did you go, and what is your height and age? What is the normal reference point for your background? Is the ak in your email name mean you are have some Polynesian and first nations blood and inherit the thicker body tendency of polynesian ancestors, or were you just trying to slim down in general?

Meanwhile, you may also be overdosing on proteins and killing yourself with the metabolic load...but there must also be some disorder involved because eating protein should be associated with growth of tissues that are primarily protein (although muscles must also be worked beyond their current status to grow larger, muscle tissue is "use it or lose it," and actually if you were growing muscles you would be adding, not subtracting weight thereby, because muscle tissue is more dense and weighs more that fat and carb tissue...all of which tells me you are possibly losing muscle mass unless you are exercising a fair bit), and the symptom you mentioned about not growing any hair (what about your skin and fingernails, are they not growing either?) is a serious loud red sign that says you need to be given a complete internal medicine workup including endocrine disorders and the possibility of a cancer somewhere in your endocrine-utilising system as well.

What all are you not telling us (including your age and from what weight did you start losing weight and at what weight are you at now with this particular complaint) about your complete history, condition and treatments?

No one can help without a boatload of information, you cannot just throw out one thing with no background or context and expect help that will actually not make things worse...if you do get something out of this with just this tiny bit you've shared, it would be by coincidence only.
