No, most probably he is deficient in niacin. Click on the above link and go to an email sent by donzim. Also please look up dr. Abram Hoffer, it's about the hallucinations.

Thanks for the info

I don't think it's from food, I would call the Neurologist to discuss or better yet make an appointment with your husband to discuss as there are medications to reduce those hallucinations. I believe that 50% of those with PD will at some time experience hallucinations either visual or auditory. In the moment just try to reorient your husband by telling him that this is not true and it may be from the Parkinsons.

It sounds like paranoia rather than hallucinations. My husband had hallucinations when he took too much Sinemet, but they were just seeing people and bugs, not suspicions of anything bad that I was doing. My father had dementia and got very suspicious of men being around my mother. Before that he was never the jealous type.

I agree. Three 25/100 daily is a pretty low dose and hallucinations are generally associated with higher doses.

Could be a nutritional deficiency. Sinemet depletes B6 for example.

See my post today about micro nutrients. One of the conditions she treats is psychosis.

My husband is on Sinemet 25/100, 2 pills, 3 times a day. His hallucinations are terrible! He has been experiencing them since last year. We have discussed with two different neurologist and asked if it’s the medication. They said we could try to reduce, which we did which did not work. Reducing Sinemet affected his mobility. So their next suggestion was to take an anti psychotic drug seroquel! He took half of the lowest dose you can get 25 mg (12.5) and that also was horrible! Knocked him out. Slept most of the time! I’ve been on this site and tried the suggestion of taking B1. Tried twice and each time he developed a rash and flushing. Unable to do that anymore. Off to his regular doctor appointment this morning to see what else if anything we can try or do. Exercise has also been suggested but you can only ask them to do it, you can’t make them. Age and other physical aspects must be taken into account.

I hope you have better success. His dose does seem low for the hallucinations to start, but then everybody is different. Maybe the drug Sinemet itself doesn’t work for him!

You have to start taking niacin slowly and build up to a bigger dosage. Niacin makes your whole face flush ear tips flush.

in reply toparkie13

We did! Both Times! 100 mg. Never did get higher!

Could be Lewy Body Dementia, a form of Parkinson's that exhibits with symptoms like hallucinations, REM sleep disorders, and minor cognitive impairment that fluctuates from day to day, week to week. Have you tried reducing or eliminating Sinimet to see what happens?

in reply to

Not yet but we see his GP next week so will discuss with her.

in reply to

Was wondering what happened after seeing your GP. Did you stop the Sinemet? If so any results? We’re still battling hallucinations.

in reply to

GP is contacting consultant to try and bring forward his appt but that could still take at least a month, verý frustrating. It is difficult to decide if it's the tablets or a progression of the condition.

Hello, has there been any update on progress?

That is possible. Not my experience. I was told about a

characteristic of continuous and rapid release meds called “Stacking”. I called it stock piling. Not all the meds release when expected. They release in a way that I would characterize as an overdose. Not trying to be dramatic. Just felt that way when it happened on Rytary

Talk to Doc!

Also happened at day’s end.

When my husband switched to Rytary his hallucinations stopped. Quietipine (Seroquel)and Remeron stopped the psychotic episodes he has when he gets confused. He will get up to an extreme height of panic and he takes a lorazepam (no more than one a day, and the time varies according to the panic) .He gets right up to the point he would usually fall apart and not remember the psychosis, but it stops now.

His stomach hurts badly all the time which seems to be OCD, and that causes the panic. The psychiatrist told us we should try marijuana. Yesterday was the worst ever with the stomach ache (he already had a hernia repair and other problems fixed, he doesn't have a physical problem.) The marijuana stopped the stomach ache with 3 puffs. He acted talkative and goofy , but no pain. It lasted all night. Next time we will try 2 puffs. I would so much rather have a stoned husband than a man in pain that seems so bad to him ,I fear he will have a heart attack or stroke.

I think it is unlikely it is his diet although a healthy Mediterranean regime is usually a good idea with these illnesses. My Mum has Lewy Body Dementia and suffers with hallucinations and Capgras syndrome. We have tried Niacin and coconut oil with no results although I do think her mood was lighter when she was on the coconut oil. The hallucinations really increase if there is any stress or worry. We are going to try CBD oil next so I will post results after a month. The consultant is reluctant to try any anti-psychotic medicines as these can be dangerous in her condition but will agree to antidepressants which may improve the anxiety. She has been taking 1g of Thiamine HCL for the past 6 months and although this hasn't changed the Capgras syndrome I am hoping it is keeping other problems at bay.

The Lewy Body Dementia was diagnosed by DAT scan last May and it is the appearance of these mental symptoms before physical changes that flag it is LBD rather than Parkinson's.

in reply toAlex2004

My husband also had capgras syndrome twice but it went away. He now just talks to me in the third party sometimes. Says there’s two or three of me!! Very scary the fist time it happened. I didn’t know what was happening so put in his symptoms to google and out came this definition! I too asked if he had LBD but they insist not!

hi alex did you try with keto diet (no carbs and zero sugar) togheter with cocount oil ?.. it's very very important to reduce the daily carbo amount (max 40 gr) according to the protocol experimented by dr Mary Newport.

Alex2004 profile image
Alex2004 in reply todangilio

Hi I would like to try my Mum on the Keto diet but she is very reluctant to make changes. She stopped taking the coconut oil but then the Capgras syndrome seemed to be flipping on and off a lot more. Now she is back on it she seems a lot more stable although the other less troublesome hallucinations seem more frequent.

How is your Mum?

dangilio profile image
dangilio in reply toAlex2004

it is stable and has not had relapses and paranoia at least until now

Alex2004 profile image
Alex2004 in reply todangilio

That’s good to hear. What is she currently taking? I wondered whether an antidepressant like Mirtazipine might help my Mum as she becomes quite anxious and worried a lot which makes her symptoms worse. Has your Mum tried antidepressants?

dangilio profile image
dangilio in reply toAlex2004

hi alex any time my mum has tried antidepressant get very worse with very very bad condition (with lewy body dementia it's common that antipsicotics or antidepressants make the condition worse.) The only thing she'is taking that help for her in the field of this drug is seroquel (quietapina)..very low dose..with a higher dose she sleep too much and moreover in conjuction with cbd oil and keto diet (with cocco) she doen't need a higher dose of this drug.

Alex2004 profile image
Alex2004 in reply todangilio

Hi, yes the consultant is really against trying antipsychotics which is understandable considering the risks with LBD. How did you get to the stage when they agreed to try your Mum on Seroquel and what is the dose you use please? She is exhausted from seeing so many extra people in the house all the time, worries about catering for them etc and also long passed relatives are also now appearing. What strength of CBD oil are you using and how much per day please? Thanks!

we started seroquel after an home visit of a neurologist. my mom was in a condition that she couldn't stand up and had many other severe problems. she was in a very bad disfagic condition pratically every muscle she had was in a freeze mode. she didn't recognize her family (me ,her husband, her sisters) .She had also many paranoia and capgras sindrome. after the visit she start madopar (1/2 cps for the rigidity..with 1 cps she was too agitated and with more paranoia) and 1 cps of seroquel before go bed. In the mean time she started keto diet with 3 tablespoons of cocco daily and very very important no carb and no sugar and 10 drops of cbd oil 10%..about 70 mg cbd daily. with the cbd oil she stopped 1 cps of benzadozipine..unbeliveble for her. in two month she was fine with no more paranoia and capgras sindrome and recognize us. we can speak with her about everything, she understand and reply like ever. now she walk and no more disfagic.
