Hallucinations.

I am a carer for lady who has late stage Parkinsons. One of many problems she has is Hallucinating. I am finding this difficult to deal with. She is on Queitiapine, but it does not seem to be helping. Would appreciate if anyone has control of their Hallucinations to let me know. Regards Martin.

5 mg of Melatonin before bed. You can increase to 10mg.

Quietipine worked for my husbnad, somewhat. He did start sundowning, wandering around at night. 10 mg of melatonin taken around 4 pm and again at 10 pm fixed that.

Hi Martin,

This is a difficult subject to deal with.

A few things to try -

1. Be sure that she is not over-medicated with overactive dopamine activity. Consult with the Dr and see if some of the dopamine meds can be reduced.

2. See my past responses related to serotonin deficiency.

3. Try a low dose of 5-HTP, no more than 25 mg to start and monitor carefully. Also be sure she's not deficient in B6 (try sublingual P5P, at least 2 hrs away from PD meds) and B12 (sublingual methyl B12). A good idea to also try adding Jarrow's Zinc Balance.

4. Depending on your ability, sometimes you may need to resort and prepare for professional help. See more responses at

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Hi there, I think the suggestions made by rescuema are worth trying. Melatonin could help with the sun downing.

Good luck and keep in touch.

I have no advice. Just want to say how good you are to be so caring. It must be very difficult.

Hi, could she be toxic? What combination of meds is she taking? The elderly cant metabolise easily.

I’ve been told Aripiprazole with Quetiapine can be very effective taken together or theres a range of antipsychotics that can be very effective too. I wish you both well x

My husband was weaned off pramipexole and prescribed Aricept beginning at 5 mg and titrating to 10 mg after 30 days. No hallucinations or delusions now. His carbidopa was increased substantially.

Pelican, Interesting, your husband sustituted an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor for a dopamine agonist, two very different classes of drugs. I suspect stopping pramipexole stopped the hallucinations. But why did the doctor increase his carbidopa?

We were told that neurologists are trained in one of two schools of methodology. One being straight carbidopa/levodopa and the other training is for a balanced mixture of drugs. The loss of the pramipexole caused immediate motor skill issues, ramped up his anxiety, and brought a significant increase to what had been a previous mild tremor. The carbidopa/levadope increase seemed to calm the waters albeit for relatively short periods. He was hospitalized for pneumonia shortly after weaning off the pramipexole. Months later primary care doc told me the pneumonia could have caused the hallucinations similar to the way a UTI does but felt it wise to stay on the Aricept.
