Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Has anyone here tried TMS and if so for what type of symptomatology? What were your results? I tried searching the archives and only came across a few scattered posts and nothing from anyone who has actually tried it for PD.

My main goal for my mom is to reduced her resting tremor and improve her mood. The data is limited but seems promising. Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has tried it. Also would be helpful if you could remember what part of your brain that you received magnet therapy to and if it was low or high frequency repetition (1 vs 10 Hz).

The psychiatrist who we saw that did TMS said he had improvement in mood with 100% of his patients and improvement of movement issues with about 30% in those with Parkinson's.

He also suggested transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (from behind the ear).

I also have been wondering about TMS.

Here is a link from Dr McMullen, Psychiatrist, who uses TMS to treat depression and who tested it on 2 PD patients with very good results:

tmsbraincare.com/tms-treatm...

and a study from Paris, France on TMS for parkinsonism:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

and a study from Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, USA:

jamanetwork.com/journals/ja...

If anyone was treated with TMS for PD, please share your experience

Thank you

I had TMS treatment around two years ago for depression. It did not help much, perhaps a little. What finally helped was ketamine assisted psychotherapy, and then starting sinemet. I’ve taken antidepressants for 20 years, and I finally feel “normal” again, and have been able to reduce my antidepressants.

I did not know that TMS can help tremor. Good to know.

I tried it about two years ago for depression. Did nothing. It waS on left side of head. At that time depression was the only condition FDA approved it for.

Here is an article about something called "Magnetic EEG/ECG-guided Resonant Therapy, or MeRT, " which is being used to treat PTSD in soldiers with success. Toward the article's end it mentions that magnetic fields had been tried on PD patients in the 1990's.

Results after 2 Sessions:

Visually it seems to have reduced about 60-70% but sometimes this can vary with time of day/fatigue so I am going to give it some time. Her mood seems stable, but I haven't asked her specific details.

Two questions for you guys:

Do you guys remember how many sessions you had?

Although you were doing it for depression, did it help with any of your (other) PD symptoms?

We will keep it going for 30 days, as that is a protocol I read somewhere. It is tough to do daily treatment with our busy schedules, but if something is important enough to you, you will restructure your life around it, so that's been fun. Will try to keep everyone updated.
