Has anyone had bunion surgery? How did the anesthesia affect your PD? Was the pain tolerable? Did your PD meds work? Thanks!

Is it on your affected side? Do you have dystonia?

I had surgery on my foot (not bunions though) while I was only taking ropinirole. It was on my affected side and the recovery was much more difficult and took longer than I or my podiatrist anticipated. I was only a few years in and still in pretty good shape at the time.

No, it’s on my other side and I have some cramping of the toes which I think is dystonia. The recovery time is at least six weeks for a bunionectomy. I’m afraid everything will go haywire from the stress! But I need to be able to walk properly in the future! That is why I’m considering the operation.

Are they doing it with a local + a drip or general anesthesia? Either way, there are certain anesthetics that are harmful to PWP, so do some research and make sure to talk to your surgeon and the anesthesiologist before hand. If you plan for the worst (a more difficult recovery) and hope for the best you should be okay.

Thank you! I’m not sure what kind of anesthesia they will use. I’m still doing my research. I do know that I have to stay off my feet for the first days. I still don’t know how I’m going to get to the bathroom in time because my PD gives me urinary urgency! Oh what fun!

I used a walker and, at the time had wood floors. I was also a pretty healthy 51 at the time.

If getting to the bathroom may be a problem you could look into a bedside commode.

I had my bunionectomy just months before dx. I told doctor no “General”. She said fine and put me under against my wishes. I won’t go into detail but it had to be redone. Second time I was not put under. Again needed to be redone. I refused a third surgery. I used a walker and walked on my heel. I preferred not being put under. I walk and wear shoes with no bunion pain despite botched surgeries. I’m only citing examples of general vs. nerve block not the problems I encountered. This surgeon was investigated and disciplined by the medical board of podiatry. Good luck on your decision.
