Yes, I had gastric bypass surgery in November of 2011 and was diagnosed in March of 2012.

Wow!! I had foot surgery in October, 2017 and was diagnosed in February 2018. I wonder if there’s something in the anesthesia that triggers PD or if it’s just a coincidence...?

HORSPLAY: How has your gastric bypass change your weight? Did the surgery work for you or have you gained your way back? I’ve seen it both ways and my doctor has been after me to have the surgery done. I am super hesitant... I would be grateful for your feedback.

I don't think that the anesthesia has anything to do with my pd. I wish that I had been diagnosed prior to the gastric bypass. If you do have the bypass, your diet needs to be higher in protein, not good with taking pd meds. Also with the gastric bypass, (at least what I had) the first portion of the small intestines is removed. This is where the levadopa is absorbed. I wish that I never had that surgery. It makes finding the right meds much harder. My weight is higher than it was a couple of years ago. However, I have recently moved and will now be able to get more exercise. So any questions, feel free to message me.

Thank you so very much for your reflections, horsplay!

My doctor is on my rear to get that surgery done, but I just have had a sense it wasn’t something I was supposed to do based on my observations of other peoples success or lack there of. I have never met a person with PD who had that surgery before. Your response is so valuable to me and I’m so appreciative that you took the time to respond with your unique perspective.

Parkinson’s certainly can complicate our choices!

Hi there. I was diagnosed with uterine cancer in August 2013 and had complete hysterectomy and in October 2013 was diagnosed with PD. I’ve had other surgeries prior to this with anesthesia, lumpectomy, lythotripsy, and also had a surgery after diagnosed a hamstring reattachment in October 2019. Karen
