Antioxidants and gastric stress

Hi all. I posted about neuropathy a while back. I’ve done lots of research and it seems that for the most part this is down to some inability to absorb B12 although it’s common for diabetics and alcoholics. It’s pretty painful and naturally I have been trying to find a solution that avoids drugs like Gabapentin. I discovered that Alpha Lipoic Acid has been clinically proven to gradually repair damaged nerves. Trouble is that it has to be taken in rather large doses (600mg-1200mg daily) and at these doses I find that I get awful heartburn and indegestion. Was wondering if anybody had any ideas as I’m keen to take this but don’t want the pain! I’ve tried it with food but sadly no help. I even looked up having injections of the stuff but predictably they’re only available at a private clinic in London for about a million quid. Thanks all.

Hi Adam. Possibly take Mylanta, an over the counter medication for heartburn and indigestion. My GP recommended it to me as B1 was causing me problems. You can't take it within 2 hrs of other medication though as it can interfere with absorption.

Cheers Jan. I’m already on a PPI which is meant to do the trick but doesn’t as far as ALA seems concerned (and I suspect that my PPI long term use had contributed to my overall ill health actually). I’ll be in touch soon. Thanks for your support.

jeeves,

You do realize that PPI's have been mentioned as a possible cause of neuropathy? They are also noted for blocking or hindering absorption of vitamin B-12 which again can be a contributing factor for neuropathy! They are pretty effective at this and more B-12 may not be enough to counter the effect.

universityhealthnews.com/da...

After reading that article, why would anybody stay on a PPI?

Have you ever read about taking hydrochloric acid in the form of betaine hcl as an alternative for treating GERD? I've written about it on this forum before and there is a ton of information on the web about it. I've used the method effectively and if done right, it "got rid of" my constant heartburn and reflux.

The PPI may be working to promote your neuropathy or at least some people seem to think so.

Art. I agree entirely but my B12 levels have seemed okay over the past couple of blood tests (not way above the acceptable threshold of 200 but at 350 I’m sure there are worse!). I do use the H. Acid currently as I figure I need it if I’m lacking natural acid. But boy I’ve lost times that I’ve made efforts to come off those Omeprazolr. Once hooked........😕. I curse the day I went on them but then again osophogial cancer is not nice either.

in reply tojeeves19

Yeah, they do not seem very user friendly! What happens when you try and come off of them? Are you familiar with a proper way to use hydrochloric acid for GERD?

No. By all means explain if you have time. I’ve tried reducing the number of ‘balls’ in each capsule gradually but it’s a drag trying to open them and they spill out all over the place!

in reply tojeeves19

I will have to search for an article , but here is a cut and paste of a reply I put up about a month ago that explains the method I used for taking hydrochloric acid to eliminate my heartburn. Please note that I used capsules that were only 325 mg of Betaine HCI and 82 mg of pepsin so that it would be easy to fine tune my way up and my way down.

It (proton pump inhibitors) are prescribed for acid indigestion, acid reflux, GERD or similar and I believe the method of action is acid production inhibition or weakening, but sometimes the real problem is not enough acid when needed for proper digestion. This is a fairly common problem as we age and hydrochloric acid production declines. For me, what I have found is that adding hydrochloric acid as a supplement has resolved the too much acid issues I used to have.

What I did was start with a relatively low dose and I noticed that my symptoms started to decline and the heartburn feeling went away. I continued to slowly increase my dose with the passing days and meals. Eventually the heartburn came back with the last dose increase and I immediately neutralized the excess acid by drinking a cup of water with baking soda in it. At the next meal, I took one less hydrochloric acid capsule and that went fine for about a week and then I got heartburn once again which again I neutralized with another cup of water with baking soda in it. At the next meal I used one less hydrochloric acid capsule and again everything was fine. I continued following this pattern until I no longer needed even one hydrochloric acid capsule and that has worked for years with no more heartburn or need to take hydrochloric acid capsules. The whole idea is that you retrain your body to make enough hydrochloric acid on its own. I can't remember exactly because it has been years, but it seems like the process took me about 6 weeks to get to where I no longer needed the extra hydrochloric acid or baking soda water. I was taking hydrochloric acid in the form of Betaine HCI in fairly low dose capsules to make it easy to work my dosage slowly up and then slowly back down.

Some people will use vitamin B-6 to try and increase natural production of hydrochloric acid, but this can add complications because some people also have problems with increased B-6 intake.

Okay, I found a relatively recent article that discusses the use of hydrochloric acid as one means to deal with it.

Hi! 3 months ago you mentioned that you were goinng on a Keto Diet and I wondered if you were still on it as it’s supposed to be good for acid reflux. I’ve been Keto for 7 months now and have had zero reflux. Trying intermittent fasting (OMAD) with the Keto at present as that is also supposed to repair one’s brain! Currently thinking of going full carnivore ;-)

Best regards, Phil 2bats

Just started back on Keto Phil after bottling it for ages. Reached ketosis quickly and intend to stay there. Thanks for the post😊

350 is still pretty low for B12. In Japan they measure differently and the lower threshold is much higher than it is in the US and apparently in the U.K. If you can't do B12 shots, you might try a sublingual form.

Have bought the sublingual lozenges😊

Hi Julie my methyl sublingual B12 (methylcobalamin) is 5000mcg. Do you think 1 per day is enough?

What does Japan recommend please?

Thanks.

I do not know how much you should take. I take injections and it's been a while since I took sublingual tablets.

As for halving a capsule, get an empty capsule at a pharmacy or Amazon, put half of one in it and then close the original capsule. If the original gets squished and hard to close, put the second half in another empty capsule. I'm to the point I just pour half of the capsule containing the little beads into my mouth and pour the other half into an empty capsule.

My Sinemet doesn’t work if I take B12, even the sublingual. I tried taking it in the morning about four hours before my first Sinemet. Tremors continued for half the day. Anyone else have a problem with taking B12?

I’ve battled indigestion for 40 years. I spent several of those on PPIs. Nothing else seemed to work at one point. But I was worried about the side effects so I finally quit, and the GERD did not come back for years. However it seems to be returning now and I am trying to control it with DGL, Tums, and a wheat free diet. It’s manageable so far. This article is too salesy for me, but it has an excellent summary of DGL and other “natural” treatments for GERD. DGL is the only one I have tried.

"Acid Soothe" chewable tablets by Enzymedica. Contains Zinc Carnosine and probiotics. It doesn't just relieve acid discomfort but protects/supports stomach lining. I have been suffering from GERD for a number of years. As usual, the allopathic doctors prescribed Omeprazol for me. I quickly found out that it raised my BP and I stopped it. Then I searched and found this amazing product. I only take two chewable tablets before supper, and it does the trick! I haven't experienced any GERD symptoms since I started it about 2 years ago. I basically ruined my stomach lining by taking high doses of ibuprofen due to migraines I suffered.
