Hello all, I am also on Requip but a very low dose and seemed like i have gained quite a but of weight (i have nit weighed myself yet). One of the articles i read online was how Requip causes loss of impulse control. Do you guys feel like you just want to eat constantly even if you are not hungry or you just ate? My doctor warned me about the very rare side effect that you may lose your impulse control. However she explained it like losing my inhibitions (so if i was spending all my money in one day). What do you guys think? Could this be a possibility?
Requip and wt gain : Hello all, I am also... - Cure Parkinson's
Requip and wt gain
REQUIP
I am not a doctor and I am giving you only my experience with the medication.
Others take it without problems.
Allergic reactions, leg swelling , severe rash legs and arms
sleepiness, unable to keep eyes open immediately to 15min after taking lasting for 30 min.
weight gain, a lot maybe 40 lbs
Compulsive disorder I cancelled my credit card, no longer carry money.
as result of side effects of medication that he prescribed my neurologist told govt to cancel my drivers license
which they promptly did. (I had not driven for 2 years anyway)
Reduction of intake must be done under advise of Neuro , stopping too fast can result in side effects one of which is Death. Three years now I have been slowly reducing the amount I take but will probably still end up taking some amount for life. It does relieve PD symptoms and reduce the amount of Leva dopa necessary
Reducing the amount resulted in the hair on my chest, legs arms and hands starting to grow back .
Drowzyness is reduced . But Neuro says that chance of getting drivers license back is ZERO.
I wish I had never started taking it, But I wish for a lot of things.
Good luck
Doctors are propagandized to understate the adverse effects of medications. Requip is a dopamine agonist. Impulse control disorders with dopamine agonists are commonplace - up to 50% of patients taking these medications experience them - compulsive eating, sex, gambling, or shopping.
Aside from compulsive eating it appears that weight gain can also be an adverse effect:
google.com/search?num=100&l...
Dopamine agonists also cause orthostatic hypotension in about one third of patients. This is a potentially disabling loss of blood pressure upon standing.
Because of such adverse effects it is my opinion that dopamine agonists should only be prescribed after levodopa medication is maxed out.
I took it at a sub therapeutic dose for about 8 months and struggled with [luckily harmless] compulsive behaviors. I also gained weight on it, but that was from edema. Although compulsive eating is not usually mentioned, it seems like it would be possible.
