Severe nausea again!!!

Benidorm66 profile image

I know I have asked this question before but I am desperate for any suggestions that could give me relief from me consistently feeling so so sick practically all day, every day and having periods of blackouts only lasting seconds at a time but are very frightening! I had a visit from my GP the last time I had a long period of nausea and he did several blood tests and even a brain scan but nothing came to light. I experimented myself with my medication and thought I had cracked it by halving my dose of Cobeneldopa to 2but it’s back again even before I take any medication! I have tried chewing gum and drinking tonic water but feel no better. Please does this happen to anyone else and how do you relieve it???

I use travel bands that go around the wrists . Pharmacy has them for under 10 dollars for motion sickness

Could it be orthistatic hypotension ?

The most common symptom is lightheadedness or dizziness when you stand up after sitting or lying down. Symptoms usually last less than a few minutes.

Orthostatic hypotension signs and symptoms include:

Feeling lightheaded or dizzy after standing up

Blurry vision

Weakness

Fainting (syncope)

Confusion

Nausea

Hmmmmm

Maybe ask for a tilt table test ?

Your doctor might recommend a tilt table test to try to trigger your signs and symptoms — lightheadedness, dizziness or fainting — while your heart rate and blood pressure are being monitored.

If you have symptoms while you're in the upright position on the tilt table, the part of your nervous system that controls blood pressure and heart rate suddenly lowers them for a short time. Less blood flows to your brain, possibly causing you to faint.

Hi Benidorm 66. I follow this site as my dad has Parkinson's, so my nausea advice isn't related. I feel nauseous a lot and have tried everything from tonic water to mints. I was in hospital the other day trying a new drug for myself and the nurse was checking how I felt every 30 mins. I said sick, but that it happens all the time and she said that's there's medicine for it and would I like her to ask the doc for it. I said no as taking too much just now...but I think you should ask your doc as there is something out there that should help.

Good morning Benidorm66,

Do you eat a small meal when taking your meds? Say some toast or crackers? Add a bit of protein (an egg or two would be easy on your stomach) about an hour after taking your levodopa may help as well. Not everyone can tolerate taking levodopa - or other meds on an empty stomach. Though I've found this, like everything else about PD, changes throughout the course of the disease. I had a rough time for the first few years with nausea and hypotension. There are also medicines available for nausea. However, these can have hypotension as a side effect.

Hope you can find some relief and feel better.

Chris

When you Say “blackout” do you mean fainting ? If I were you I really think I’d go to the E.R. to get it checked out, you say your nausea is severe and having blackouts would be frightening. Women can have very different symptoms with heart related issues and both nausea and fainting can be indicators of something cardiac related . You tried the dr route with no success please go and see what they say at the hospital. They’ll be better able to help you. You’ll be in my prayers please update us!🙏🏻💕

I thought of probiotics when I read your first post. I googled "can probiotics help with nausea" on the computer and learned there is a connection and taking probiotics can help. If you don't take them, it might be worth trying. I have taken them for many years before being diagnosed 3.5 years ago. I started carbidopa/levodopa when dx and had no nausea--probably because my gut was in good shape because of the years of probiotics. They are sold in the digestive part of the drugstore or on Amazon. Maybe someone can get them for you to try as soon as possible.

Thankyou for your reply. I may sound thick but what are probiotics? Is there a brand name I can look for??

Try and get Mutaflora. It’s a bit pricey but is the one given to me by my integrative GP before she has tested me for more specific ones.

Apparently it was formulated by hitlers GP who supposedly had PD.

I hope it helps as nausea is the worst.

In the interim people swear by ginger tea so it might be worth a try. Also marijuana is great for nausea, but I’m not sure where you live and it’s legality!

healthline.com/nutrition/pr...

The url above is an article on Healthline. There are lots of brands--I have always used Allign. Touching the url above with your computer's curser will take you to the article. If you don't want to try probiotic capsules, you could try eating yogurt like Activa to see if it helps.

maybe you need to work with your PD neurologist not a GP. I had severe nausea and was throwing up from levodopa/carbidopa. The neurologist ordered an increase in the carbidopa portion. Levodopa makes us nauseous and that's why carbidopa was added to the mix, so we could tolerate levodopa. First I went off levodopa all together and only took carbidopa and after a week we added levodopa back in slowly and continued a higher percent of carbidopa for a long time. I also asked why he didn't give me nausea medicine, he said it interacts with levodopa.

Although I feel sick,I am never sick!! I sometimes wish I was and have tried to make myself sick but to no avail!

it doesn't matter if you throw up, dr can still adjust carbidopa portion. levodopa is well documented in making us sick.

I am at a loss what the cause is now as for the last weekI have cut my Co-benelopa down to one dose only taken at 12 noon and take my Azilect after breakfast with my other meds but my nausea now is stating about 10 mins after I get up before I take any medication and gets worse as the day progresses until about 9 o’clock in the evening and it then magically disappears apart from my wooziness!,

Sorry to hear about your nausea. It is a misery. I’m not sure there is one answer but I spent about 8 months with this hell and finally figured out what worked for me. My neurologist put me on Sinemet extended release 3 times a day so I always have a low level of levodopa in my system. The regular Sinemet was too much levodopa at once. I also learned I need to take it on an empty stomach an hour before I eat. If I eat anything immediately before, I am nauseous. I have to take my daily dose of Amadatine after breakfast and lunch and Azilect after breakfast. It took a lot of experimentation but this group really helped me figure it out. I was ready to give up on the levodopa but I really don’t move well without it. I hope you find relief and know that you’re not alone.

My husband takes an anti nausea medication called tigan with each dose of his sinemet. If he does not have the combination of meds he suffers terribly. I don't think he could tolerate his sinemet if he did not have the tigan to help. Good luck!

I have found that meclezine helps nausea and has no side effects. It is an over the counter item, so you can try it on your own.

I have read that PD affects the heart’’s functioning which can also cause dizziness, passing out ,etc. I do not remember much in the way of facts, but you can probably find info on internet.

Best wishes with your search for info.

You could try the ReliefBand (available on Amazon, although it costs about $100). It's a battery-powered device that looks like a watch and goes on your arm in the same place. I normally have terrible nausea on boats, but it goes away immediately when I turn on the ReliefBand. I keep it on 24 hours a day on cruises and I feel totally normal the whole time. It's used for motion sickness, morning sickness, and for chemotherapy.

Thankyou I am trying the Seabond wristbands at the moment( a bit less expensive at £7) but I will definitely keep it in mind.
