I hope the thiamine protocol will help eventually. In the meantime, drinking plenty of fluids is important, and you can try the generic form of Mucinex, which is used to thin mucous and make it easier to cough up. The generic form can be found in most any store or pharmacy over-the-counter. I hope this helps.

Mucinex really helps. When you buy it just make sure it has no other medication with it, it is just plain Mucinex. You can take a big amount and not worry about side effects it's a benign drug. Also you can rinse your mouth out of hydrogen peroxide, it will get rid of some of the thickened mucus from your mouth. So you can rinse and spit and rinse and spit again.

You can also consider N acetylcysteine or NAC as it helps thin mucus and can help repair damage to the lungs and other areas of the body through its radical neutralizing effects. Some PWPs use NAC as part of their regimens for its antioxidative ROS scavenging effects.

I take NAC exactly for this reason. Before I took it I had disgusting stringy saliva you could get hold off and pull out! Now it is normal.

I have it in powder form and take 1 tiny spoon (come with) a day. About 700mg

Lots of postings on aspiration pneumonia and choking on the PSP site here on Health Unlocked. Good luck.

I thought mine was due to sinus/allergies. I too, find the Mucinex helpful. My doctor said I can take it safely for a week or so but then should take a break

Have suffered for years with chronic mucus/cough problems until my internist scripted Tussionex 1/2 tsp every 12 hours. Symptoms cleared up within several hours. This problem apparently has noting to do with my Parkinson's. I still do not know what triggers the issue but it can last from one day to a few weeks. The RX stops the illness dead in its tracks. Only side effect is feeling sleepy for awhile.

I had this problem. A dietary change eliminated it within a week. I went cold turkey on all grains and sugar.

I have had good results with a nasal lavage system called Neil Med . Comes with bottle and applicator plus prepackaged powder. I add a few drops of organic cider vinegar. Once in a.m. use warm distilled water. Good luck.

Not sure if this will help mucous, but my Mom will often choke when eating. Having lemon ice at the ready helps stop the choking immediately. The effect of the sour lemon, I believe, is what actually does the work. It is worth trying. Good luck.

my husband is on vlo vent puffer with the face mask it is easier to administer. 2x daily. it opens the airway. after seeing a doctor of audiology for hearing decline we found out Ron had fluid buid up behind his ears. R will need tubes put in. The nose ears and throat all connected. This may help for the mucas in throat as well. This is not parkinson related. Doctors often brush off any complaints as being just the PD. hearing is all my man has left. there have been so many losses this the most profound. I will leave no stone unturned and sure enough this can be fixed with local freezing. Very simple proceedure.
