Sinemet, Mucuna Pruriens & positive experience with Ashwaghanda Root: Is the dosage of MP causing the problems: leg freezing etc.

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons age 63 1.5 yrs ago Rx Sinemex (carb/levo 25-100mg. 4 tabs a day). At first all was well; then a few months ago I started to have issues, especially deep fatigue 24/7 that was exhausting. I was so tired! Other problems as well.

So I decided to try going with Mucuna Pruriens (Swanson 200 capsules 350 mg) as I'd heard so many good things about it. Well, it was awful! My foot started to freeze to the floor so I couldn't move forward or turn-I couldn't take even one step; I needed help getting dressed, on & off toilet, forget shopping; stiff walking; tremors; the works.

My husband and I had read about ashwaghanda root and added it to our supplement list--about an hour after taking one capsule it was heaven! All of a sudden I could walk around downstairs BETTER than I had as a young child. NO leg freezing, needed no help using toilet, dressing. It was a MIRACLE. And then my 30 minutes in heaven were up. I decided to take a shower to celebrate the success of the ashwaghanda root and when I got out it was gone. Gone. I was back in frozen foot, fatigue, tremors land! I have tried adding it back to our daily supplement list and it hasn't changed, the frozen foot and arms are still there.

I can't live with the mucuna pruriens with the dosage etc. I tried to use (350mg capsule 2 a day) so it looks like I'll have to go back to the Sinemet, which is exactly what I don't want to do for all the reasons we discuss here.

My husband thinks we were not using enough mucuna pruriens to make a difference. Neither of us can figure out why the ashwaghanda root worked so so well for only 30 minutes...

Any ideas my friends? How do I move on from Sinemet to mucuna pruriens? And is that as good an idea as people say? My husband wants us to consider healing parkinsons with pro and pre biotics.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and kindnes.

I am not familiar with that version of MP, but I think it's safe to assume that the dosage was nowhere near that of 4 x 25/100 Sinemet. Search mucuna here and you will find a treasure trove of information on different products and dosing. Good luck! You can also search for ashwaghanda.

Why did you choose this version of MP from Swanson? It does not state the concentration of Levodopa and dosages, and it has not passed any clinical study for the treatment of PD.

I suggest you buy from a reputable company specialized in mucuna only for the treatment of PD, such as ZANDOPA ( based on HP-200) zanduayurveda.com/products/... which includes the whole Mucuna powder and it's the only mucuna product in the market which efficacy was proven in a human study ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/939... .

Alternatively MP extracts with 15% levodopa concentration may be helpful but their efficacy have not been studied and they may be missing mucuna's beneficial properties. Clinically tested Sensoril® Ashwagandha is a patented formula of Ashwaghanda extract. It's all about the correct product and dose, just play safe...

I take MP from Banyan. I started with 1/4 tsp ( about 700mg) and gradually work up to a little over 1/2 tsp( 1600 mg) twice daily. I'M guessing his MP maybe has 3 to 4% levodopa in it.

You need someone good in math to help figure out how to match the meds to MP.

I am 56 and have been having some serious issues with Parkinson's especially after a stroke in 2014. I'm sick of taking the sinemet seems to cause the same symptoms it's supposed to reverse.i can't go without at least one dose a day but I've decided to add b vitamins and chiropractor. So far really good results. I wish us all luck. As far as swallowing? I guess it's always gonna be a problem. We just have to remember to breathe and relax and not to panic.

Not what you're looking for?
