Gabapentin could it work for you?

i am taking 200 mg of Gabapentin 3 times a day. I no longer have any Parkinson's pain. I had pain in my hands feet and legs and arms mainly when i was off. Now i do not have any pain when i am on or off. it also increased how long my meds last. My meds now last 4 to 6 hours. I take 3 25/100 and 1 50/200 24 hour release Carbadops/levadopa every 4 hours 24/7. l also stopped taking Ropinirole. I don't know what effect that had. I have not had any depression or sad time for the last week. I was having depression or sad time almost every day. I think the ropinirole was the cause of it. I am sleeping better. I am not having any side effects. I do tend to rock back and forth when i am setting. But just a little but it does not bother me. I do not feel sleepy as much during the day. Gabapentin has changed my life. I think everyone here should try it.

The photo is me about to start a 1 mile walk. The bar bell weighs 95 pounds.

I am 64 12 years diagnosed with Parkinson's. I have all symptoms of Parkinson's except tremor.

Has anyone here had a similar reaction using Gabapentin.

Gabapentin for Parkinsonism: A Double-Blind, Placebo-controlled, Crossover Trial

Silvestrov, given all those positive reports, do you believe that Gabapentin is a safer alternative for long term pain management compared to NSAID drugs?

Do the positive effects of Gabapentin relate to the Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) which has similar structure?

Does supplementation with natural anti-anxiety agents such as GABA, Taurine and L-Theanine exert similar effect to Gabapentin?

Latest research ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... indicate that a-synuclein aggregation may equally affect GABA receptors as well as dopamine receptors.

* Parkinson's disease (PD) as a selective damage of dopaminergic neurons should be updated into the concept of a severe multisystemic neurodegenerative disorder of the nervous system, whose clinical symptoms reflect the localization and progression of the most advanced GABA pathology. *

Why the medical community have shown less interest in this aspect of the disease which affects the daily life of millions of PD patients?

I personally find it very insulting to all those patients that go though such suffering and pain due to the lack of knowledge of the disease from many of the "professionals" and the availability of possible treatments; GABAergic and Dopaminergic treatments should go along!

I have known of a total of 3 people who tried Gabapentin. 1 person suffered with horrible depression and memory loss; another claimed gabapentin helped her but she had a history of drug abuse which is problematic as we shall see. And Bailey responded well to the drug and I am happy for him. But what are some of the possible side effects

of gabapentin?

"Additional side effects of Neurontin abuse may include:"

Weight gain, Dizziness, Fatigue, Runny nose, Fever, Headaches, Memory loss, Tremors

Double vision, Dry mouth, Muscle aches, Nausea, Impaired motor functions

"The FDA also warns that one in 500 people who take Neurontin may experience suicidal thoughts."

"Many report that it produces a “zombie-like” effect, hence the “Morontin” moniker."

futuresofpalmbeach.com/neur...

Having looked at gabapentin I am weary of it and other GABA analogues like pregabalin and phenibut:

Gabapentin and pregabalin: abuse and addiction.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/228...

Phenibut:

Phenifucked - My Descent into Phenibut Induced Hell on Earth - Part 1

drugs-forum.com/journal/phe...

So if you are not having any side effects from GABA analogues, you are fortunate.

Since I have no need for GABA analogues I am content with using Theanine because

it is quite safe and has many positive effects on the human body including:

bolstering the immune system: telegraph.co.uk/news/scienc...

It offers PD neuroprotection: greenmedinfo.com/article/l-...

It reduces anxiety: ihpmagazine.com/l-theanine-...

It protects the liver: sciencedirect.com/science/a...

Finally:

The combination of L-theanine and caffeine improves cognitive performance and increases subjective alertness.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/210...

I looked into whether theanine could help with neuropathic pain (like gabapentin)

and could not find any evidence supporting this idea and others have

investigated this matter:

L-Theanine, a better alternative to Gabapentin and Pregabalin?

bluelight.org/vb/threads/63...

When I first heard that Bailey was responding well I too assumed it modulated his

GABA levels and here is a GABA/PD study:

CSF GABA levels in Parkinson's disease.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/669...

It is interesting that GABA levels were normalized by by L-dopa and

anicholinergics (it is an old study).

Another study notes that a:

Direct link between GABA activation and dopamine suppression

news-medical.net/news/20120...

But this does not explain Bailey's positive response so it is a matter of conjecture.

I guess we are back to square 1.

Bottom line is, like every other drug therapy for PD, results may vary and it you are having neuropathic pain perhaps gabapentin may help. Of course, there are other possible therapies to try prior to using the drug.

I have posted this before but it is good to know:

Silvestrov, thank you very much for your research and your elaborate answer . Your active contribution to the community is well appreciated.

Neuropathy is an often overlooked symptom of PD.

Your list of supplements is a multi-approach regimen against the disease and quite interesting as well healthunlocked.com/parkinso...

You mention that you take 5 ibuprofen (NSAID) a week.

Is it because of the pain caused by a neuropathy?

It is interesting that Bailey stopped taking Ropinirole prior to Gabapentin, a dopamine agonist that includes dizziness and drowsiness as side effects. I wonder whether the combination of those 2 drugs could exacerbate those symptoms

silvestrov profile image
silvestrov in reply toGreenday

I take ibuprofen prior to sleep because my body feels better upon waking with little to no body aches. Several years ago I fought off osterarthritis - not PN, I caught OE early, and my joints feel better after taking ibu.. I think ibuprofen is the best NSAID for PD for several reasons.

Antidepressant and antioxidative effect of Ibuprofen in the rotenone model of Parkinson's disease.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/247...

Ibuprofen or piroxicam protects nigral neurons and delays the development of l-dopa induced dyskinesia in rats with experimental Parkinsonism: Influence on angiogenesis

europepmc.org/abstract/med/...

The second study begs the question whether taking low dose ibuprofen with levodopa could prevent/reduce dyskinesia? Ibuprofen helps me but I try to limit my its consumption to 5 days a week (and take a yearly 10 day 'holliday' to limit the side effects. The best way to take ibuprofen is the liquid/children's formula because it is safer for the stomach and will minimize ulcer risks. NSAIDS I do not like are Tylenol/acetaminophen and sodium naproxen. Years before I was exposed to chemicals and experienced a parkinson's-like syndrome, my job aggrevated my many joint problems and the Dr placed me on (then) prescription horse pill sodium naproxen and I shook like a leaf with bilateral shaking - both arms were simultaneously affected. I had to take a different job until the prescription was complete and then I returned to 'normal'.

Exacerbation of idiopathic Parkinson's disease by naproxen

bmj.com/content/311/7002/422.3

I am not found of using Tylenol because it depletes glutathione from the liver and if someone should intentionally/unintentionally OD their life will be saved by having n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) injected into them. Otherwise their liver would be destroyed and they would die.

Acetaminophen Toxicity Treatment & Management

emedicine.medscape.com/arti...

Other people on this site have spoke favorably about ibuprofen use but it has to be used with caution.

Recently I discovered that taking 100 mg of caffeine (or a cup of coffee) with 200 mg ibuprofen has synergistic pain killing effect:

Single dose oral ibuprofen plus caffeine for acute postoperative pain in adults

Cochrane.org/CD011509/SYMPT...

Have a good week and I need to get back at updating a section of my documentary.

Rich

PS. Ibuprofen also reduces PD risk.

I was given gabapentin for a nerve pain episode that had me in bed for 4 weeks (BAD!!!) I noticed it made the Mucuna Pruriens I take for PD work better and last longer. I take 200 mg three times a day. I had to change docs because my PCP would not prescribe it for me. With the reality that PD is progressive and unrelenting, I would eat wood if it made me feel and function better. So for now, GP is a part of my daily attempt to live a "normal" life. And, for now, it works. Not a cure, not a solution for the long run, but for now...

I was prescribed gabapentin today for sleep . One each night at 300 mg each. I read the side effects and one concerns me more than the others and that would be damaging of I don't I don't know whether to take this stuff or not!
