My Gran may get taken into care. P.D sufferer, can anyone help ?

Hi, I'm new to this site but hope someone may be able to help ?

My Gran has had P.D for several years now, and been taken care at home.

All of a sudden one night she totally changed into someone I didn't recognise ! Totally confused, hallucinating, delerious, wetting bed, unable to sleep, and more.

Is it possible over- night to change to such a distressing state ?

She has been hospitalised, and is currently being assessed, but surely a water infection or similar ( that may have been cause ? ) wouldn't do this !?

Anyone with any help or advise would be gratefully received, as I'm in fear of her been put in a nursing home.

check her meds did she over dose. Pd meds can mess you up.

Thanks. Funny you should mention about the medication increase That is exactly what happened a week or so before. My Grandfather doesn't want me involved, but she is a mother to me, so I will never give up on her !

Bailey is right about checking her meds. As she had an increase only recently I would be thinking that could have tipped her over. Itcan beincreasing the dose even just a little, and it can be introducing a new drug. The usual treatment is to reduce the meds and give another med to stop the hallucinations etc.

A urinary infection can certainly do it too or any type of infection especially in older people.

Hallucinations and delusions are part of the disease but they can be triggered or made worse by drugs. Some drugs are worse than others for this. It is a fine balance sometimes between getting enough meds to control symptoms but not too much to give hallucinations.

Glad you are there for your Gran. Hallucinations can be very scary.

Thanks, really worried ! She was just ' plodding on ' then all of a sudden BANG !!!??? Getting worried also as my GF is now trying to use this as a reason to put my Gran in a home. I will not let this happen, so thanks for your help.

Thanks for all the advice and help. So worried that the confusion from the meds is an excuse for my GD to put her in nursing care. I want and she wants to come home. What can I do as a Grandchild ? Any advise, please.....

Make sure she has a advocate for her to make sure what is done is in her best interest.

Our Parkinson's nurses tell us that four things can trigger sudden declines in symptoms. You Nan's could be the result of either, or both of two of them.

1 Unresolved constipation.

2 Infection (urine, chest, skin)

3 A new medication

4 missed medication.

my neighbour who doesn't have parkinsons had a water infection with exactly the same symptoms, she ended up in hospital until it cleared

My elderly mom had all of those symptoms and it was a urinary tract infection. Was scary though. I hope it is nothing too serious.

I hope that it's nothing serious that can be addressed in the hospital. Having said that, your grandfather may be terribly stressed as the main caregiver and this latest problem has been too much for him. Can other family members, including yourself, take regular shifts to care for your Gran, or can you obtain help from social services?

A UTI (a urinaey tract infection) can cause all those symtoms very quickly. She needs antibiotics. Some infections are more resistant than others and week appear to go away but turn return...in whiich case she may have to get a culture done so the doctor can figure out which antibiotic is best.

Your grandfather is probably overwhelmed and exhausted bu responsibilities and worry.

I can't believe it has been a year since I first wrote for help and support.any thanks again for all your help with this matter

Sice the last post I have been trying to get more information about helping Gran with her situation, as I am still of mind that she shouldn't be in a care home.

She frequently has water infections, but I am yet to have received a proper diagnosis from any member of staff working there.

What is wrong with her??

She has had a series of mini strokes over the past 8 years, but I still do not think she has PD.

Just something that my GD said about Vascular Dementia, and then she would put live him as there's nothing wrong with her!!

How could I get a proper diagnosis made without getting into trouble from my family who want her in care??

I would like to care for her at home.

Any help would be very gratefully received.
