Help. Explosive episodes of anger. Is this dementia?

Help needed. My mom just started throwing fits about a week ago. It’s been consistent every day. She flips a switch all of a sudden and starts screaming and crying. She has moments of hallucinations and doesn’t recognize me. She is having arthritis pain in her shoulder and she will scream and yell for pain medicine. When we give it she says we are lying and we didn’t give it to her.

She had a procedure done last week for her pain in her legs. Radio frequency ablation and that is when it increased about a day or two after she just started flipping out.

She also has a DBS and the dr adjusted it about 2 months ago.

We don’t know what is going on. The sinimet seems to increase the intensity of the episodes.

My dad wants to have her hospitalized and possibly placed in a nursing home at this point.

We can’t seen to calm her down and she stays up

All night.

It seems that her Parkinson’s has morphed to something else completely over night.

I just spoke to her nurse at the neurologist office and they said to check for a UTI as that might be what is causing it. I made an appt for her this afternoon to see her primary care to do a test and maybe antibiotics. I hope that is what it is. I pray that is all it is.

Yes, surprisingly this can be the cause. I know of someone who recently ended up in, then out of the psych ward because his psychosis was due to a UTI.

If it seems to happen early evenings it may be sundowners(Look it up) It is a part of dementia My mother had it bad and it was horrible!

Thank you. I will look it up. Right now it has only happened in the morning and afternoons.

It sounds to me like psychosis. It can come and go and my husband has been treated for it successfully. What has helped him most is Seraquel, and Remeron. He takes lorazapam when he has a panic attack. There was no reasoning with him when he was psychotic. He never remembered how he acted later. His favorite statement was to tell me how mean i was to him.

Thank you. I will let my dad know about the meds you mentioned. I really hope it is only temporary. And yes she thinks we all are against her when she has her episodes. She has no recollection of it once it passes.

UTI came back negative.

Neurologist prescribed seraquel and also made a referral for a psychotherapist.

She took the seraquel last night for the first time. My dad said she didn’t sleep the entire night.

Is that common?

I forgot to mention that my husband had horrible hallucinations, also. He would see 200 people pushing our travel trailer around in the field. He would want to die and beg for me to give him something to do it with. That all stopped with the medication.

That’s encouraging to hear the medication helped. My mom has an appt this week so hopefully her neuro will approve.

It wasn't common for my husband to not sleep due to the seroquel, but he has trouble sleeping often anyway. It probably was caused by the seroquel, but that should change. My guess your mother's the brain is adjusting. It has made a great difference my husban's life (and mine.) The Remeron I mentioned that he takes also, is used for sleeping; if she could be on that also, that would help.Does she take melatonin?

An added dose of lorazapam along with the other twowhen he panics is what works over the long haul. This has taken 3 years to get all shaped up.

Thank you for your reply. I will let my dad know to keep giving it to her and hopefully she will adjust. I definitely think some depression has set it. So far nothing has been prescribed for that. Maybe the psychiatrist will help with that.

Seroquel is given in much larger doses for people who are bipolar.My husband is not bipolar. My husband takes 25mg in the morning and 25mg at night. Just one 25 mg dose a day didn't work well.

My husband's biggest problem now is constant stomach aches (unless he can think about something else). They are mental.He used to get psychotic over them, now he just hurts and gets panicky. There is a big difference from his previous behavior. He is going to start training at a speech therapist to bring his body into balance and change his brain patterns so he can relax.

Yeah my mom is so easily triggered by anxiety. I can be talking to her almost normal then within the next sentence she is panicking about something and she fixates on it and won’t let it go.

My husband has always been an alarmist, but the way his brain focused his whole life helped him as a civil engineer. However, now the focusing just drives him nuts, he can't let go of a thought. But, the panic is something we can live with, the psychosis wasn't.

It takes a little while to kick in, I'd say at least 4-6 days. Longer for some people.
