My husband is on this drug now for a week, I ordered it from an anti ageing site so did not get a lot of instructions from a doc. Does he really need to avoid the aged cheeses and all this list of foods containing tyramine? My most important question is, Does he have to stop taking Mucuna Pruriens bean powder? Why does the prohibited foods list contain Fava beans? Mucuna has even more Dopa. Any advice very much appreciated.
Do you really have to avoid fresh homemad... - Cure Parkinson's
Do you really have to avoid fresh homemade bread and saurerkraut on Selegiline?
Selegiline is a MAOi type B, NO "cheese effect", only combined with MAOi A will possibly cause hypertensive reaction.
IT can safely be combined with Mucuna Pruriense also.
I have taken it alone and with Mucuna, and in my case has not done much for PD, but NO side effects either.
Wow! you guys are so helpful. It is great to find people with experience in how to go on with this problem. He has only been on the Selegiline for about 9 days, so we are not expecting it to kick in just yet, but we are hopeful. The bean powder is actually making a difference for him. He can't sleep without it, but adjusting the dosage is proving to be a problem since I bought like 5 different brands and they don't all act the same way.
My wife makes bread every day and I'm on selegeline, it's fine, plenty of crumbly old cheese too.
You just made his day. He loves cheese and fresh bread. We eat homemade bread exclusively.
Old news. The modern version of rasagiline/selegiline doesn't contain MAO-As any more. Tyramine is fine - beer is especially good.
The idea of avoiding fresh homemade bread and sauerkraut seems very lunatic fringe to me. Life is too short to stress out about nonsense. Stress causes tremor as well. Avoiding aged cheeses is also lunatic fringe.
NO NO, the OP's safety concerns about the class of drugs called MAO are valid.
It just happens that Selegiline and Rasagiline are MAOi type B at the doses we use them. So no issues. Use the wrong combo and wrong drug and you may pop like a balloon from blood pressure !
From wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyram...
====================
Tyramine is physiologically metabolized by monoamine oxidases (primarily MAO-A), FMO3, PNMT, DBH, and CYP2D6.[9][10][11][12][13] In humans, if monoamine metabolism is compromised by the use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and foods high in tyramine are ingested, a hypertensive crisis can result, as tyramine also can displace stored monoamines, such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, from pre-synaptic vesicles.
The first signs of this were discovered by a British pharmacist who noticed his wife, who at the time was on MAOI medication, had severe headaches when eating cheese.[14] For this reason, the crisis is still called the "cheese effect" or "cheese crisis", though other foods can cause the same problem.[15]:30–31
Most processed cheeses do not contain enough tyramine to cause hypertensive effects, although some aged cheeses (such as Stilton) do.[16][17]
I am so thankful you take the trouble on here to reply to questions. I know how busy life can be. This is what I was hoping for, that with time and experience people have found this strict advice is not quite necessary

Re selegiline - the low dose we use in PD is OK. It can be a concern when given in higher strengths when it is used as an antidepressant.
