Thank you for posting this article! I strongly believed this, but like with all things you have to have "the study" or proof for the Doc to listen to you. I will be printing this out and providing it to my Doc at my next visit. Thank you!
Thank-you Martha. I have an ex-partner with Parkinson's . I think that there is a lot we could do. As we understand more about the impact of gut bacteria on the enteric nervous system, and the effects of the enteric nervous system on the brain i think it becomes clearer to see what might minimise the risks of developing Parkinson's and avenues to explore to reduce its impact. Good sleep (deep slow wave sleep) is a part of this - it is conducive to improving good gut bacteria, calming the nervous system, cleaning the brain, and at the same time, is affected by poor gut bacteria, stress, an overactive mind, poor vagal nerve quality.. If we can break the cycle...
You may be interested to know that there is a case series evaluation of our zeez sleep pebble underway at Plymouth University. It is clear that poor sleep is a risk factor for the development of Parkinson's Disease, and this study shows that where there are sleep issues, there is more cognitive impairment. Deep slow wave sleep is really important - but sleeping medication don't help this stage of sleep even though they may help sleep onset and reduce interruptions (EEG studies show lighter more faster wave sleep). Our sleep device is designed to prompt deep sleep and we are hopeful that the case series will show that it is worthwhile doing a larger study on efficacy with patients with Parkinson's disease. There are studies which slow that fibre (root vegetables) deepen sleep quality and others which show that sugar increases interruptions in sleep.
