Hi I was given Pantropazole for gerd. I started it a week ago. It started to work better yesterday. But today I feel like I have the flu or I should say it appears to be effecting my pd. Anyone else have any experience with this drug?? Thanks and be well.

What's gerd?

Gastro esophageal reflux disease. Acid reflux at its finest. The acid is coming to a halt for sure. Just not crazy about the pd getting worse. Not sure if these side effects will subside in time or what. Not a good situation for me as I was pretty independent. Be well Judy

Ugh, I hope I don't get to know that term better. My sympathy.

I know it's been pretty awful. Almost a whole year of sheer hell. I'm guessing it may just be the pd wreaking havoc on the ans. I'm really done with all the testing. We'll see. Thanks. J

These proton pump inhibitors do have their fair share of adverse effects, especially over the long term: xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/22469...

Have you ever tried something simpler like taking an over-the-counter antacid whenever you have discomfort?

I could only wish. I gave birth to 2 babies naturally and honestly can say this is worse. Especially since it has been going on for near on 6 months. Between May and August I lost over 50 lbs. so far it's the only thing that has come close to alleviating the pain. Thanks and be well. Oh I spoke with the pharmacist this morning and she said only 1 per day and to take it 2 hours outside my pd Meds and check with the dr on Monday. I am so sensitive to Meds. I almost always get some horrible side effect.

I was thinking particularly of OTC ant acids. Your drug is a PPI - proton pump inhibitor,. I don't know the implications of them but from what I read pantopazole is meant to be used short term.

Reflux is common with PD drugs, I take some meds with food for this reason.

Just found this info too - a proton pump inhibitor should be taken at least 30 mints before meal so that it reduce acidity. However after a week it will not matter because ppi's are long lasting so at that point the meds overlap and so with or without or before or after food does not matter. If you have taken a ppi for a longtime and stop suddenly you will be fine for about 3-4 days then everything will start to work again and you will pay hell till you get the acid under control again.

Yes and after reading about it, stopped taking it. You might want to get a hard cc of Drug Muggers by Suzy Cohen to read about all the drugs you take, how they affect your nutrients and what else works. We use Heartburn Relief by Enzymatic Therapy and it is really fantastic. Also digestive enzymes.

There are a variety of reasons for gerd. You can have an actual failure of the sphincter muscle keeping the good from regurgitating back up the esophagus, in which case fundiplication is called for. You might just also have in digested food in the stomach creating gases as it ferments... This gas will push back up into the esophagus. This is when one needs digestive enzymes. One of the most common reasons in PD is slow motility of the digestive tract. Food lays around longer and has greater chance to ferment.

We use Activia (preferably the new one with fiber) and Align (cheapest at Cistco). We also use amino acid l -glutamine (read about it) which is terrific to keep gut healthy. Be careful using fiber unless it is very fine or liquified. It can lay around in the stomach and accumulate , forming something akin to a hair ball and block the entrance to the intestine. You don't want that!!

Drug Muggers. Here is something on that subject I think is well written: bit.ly/2aVu5OI "When Good Doctors Prescribe Bad Medicine"

Having only a cell phone I skimmed the article and did no see Vioxx. The following article is about perhaps the greatest drug scandal in US history. Merck serviced by the skin of their teethe and they should have been shutdown & executives imprisoned:.

Sadly, the topic of Big Pharma and Bad Drugs is quite large. The importance of the link I posted is that it calls out dangerous drugs that are *still being prescribed*. In large independent studies not funded by pharma, Fosamax and others of its ilk (bisphosphonates) have been shown to *increase* hip fracture risk rather than reduce it. It should not even be on the market. Statins can cause terrible adverse effects, whereas vitamins K1, K2 and D, plus a bit of silica and boron, do a better job of reducing fracture and cardiovascular risk than either of these, all without the adverse effects.

That said, I am very impressed that a conservative publication did not hesitate to publish this very damning information about Merck and Vioxx. Perhaps liberals and conservatives have more in common than they & we think.

Digestive enzymes are a great thing to take. I believe it was on Dr. Mercola . com that I read that gerd is actually caused by too little stomach acid rather than too much. Something to look into. Those gastros always want to push ppi's. I refused and took HCI instead, natural substance, and I am fine. Some people told me that after being on ppi's for a long time, they found it impossible to get off them. Don't know. I've never taken them. Wishing you good luck!

what do you mean by digestive enzymes? probiotics? i will check it out. the pharmaceutical companies are not going to give in on ppi's. they really screwed up my pd. i was imbalanced, slurring my speech, pain in joints that i havent had since before i was diagnosed. i haven't figured out how to not take meds for the pd, if i could believe i would give those up too!! thanks i'll go to dr mercola. be well judy

I've been taking it for a year. I also take sinemet. It doesn't seem to affect me. I don't think it's doing anything. I still have the same symptoms as before.

The problem with gerds is to make sure that it is not secondary to H. pylori, your M.D. should check it out as it needs special antibiotic treatment.

The long term use of Pantoprazol, or others, is no longer advocated, use an OTC antiacid when needed

I was checked for everything under the sun some twice. Personally I just think it's pd and the attack on the ans. Thanks for your input. Be well j

You might be having a bad reaction to it or else coming down with something. Try skipping it for a day or 2 and see what happens. I take it as well and works for me. That is what I would do since I have bad reactions to a lot of meds.

thank you all for your thoughtfulness and advice. it is very important to me. the biggest thing i don't like are the side effects i'm getting from this proton pump prohibitors. but no one has figured out how to stop the acid. this one has worked the best. i took only 1 last night at 10 pm which was 2 hours after my last dose of pd meds. pharmacist highly recommended this. i awoke as usual around midnight and took another pd dose as usual. then i slept from midnight to 4 am. a much needed chunk of sleep i haven't had in months. since they had loaded me up on iv protonics and the dexilant i didn't realize the side effects. my left side which is where the pd started started giving me pain and swelling especially in the wrist. my balance and gait are way off. i can't imagine i would have had such a tremendous progression in the pd so fast. i have had splitting topskin only and then read the skin can peel away from the muscles. that was enough to make me have nightmares. anyway any further help would be appreciated. none of the otc stuff seemed to quell it. gaviscon only worked for a short time. be well judy
