•The time between toilet trips increases compared with your usual pattern. (Note: there is a large range of normal bowel habit. Some people normally go to the toilet to pass stools 2-3 times per day. For others, 2-3 times per week is normal. It is a change from your usual pattern that may mean that you are constipated.)
My shopping list: docusate sodium (stool softener) 2-3x/day, plus the usual oatmeal with wheat bran in the morning. That's it.
PD dries out the GI tract from one end to the other. Equally important to treat the dry mouth, else one is prone to get a sore tongue and tooth decay. Cevimeline is the right stuff for that purpose.

RoyProp,
Thanks for that it started my day with a belly laugh (pardon the pun) as your post heading re constipation came directly under 'daily digest' in the site email. The tears are drying as I write.
Raisin Bran helps too!
You put the 'movement" in HealthUnlocked Parkinson's Movement.
Prune juice with a pat of butter is also very good.
Coconut oil and chocolate "candy" with nuts and dried cherries sure works well and it's an easy recipe. Let me know if you would like a copy. It is SO much better than taking another medicine.
I would like this recipe!
Here it is....Easy and Delicious Coconut Oil Chocolates. Melt together 1 cup coconut oil and 1 cup dark or semi sweet chocolate chips. Stir in some ( 1/2 to 3/4 cup each ) shredded coconut, chopped nuts (I use walnuts) and dried cherries or cranberries. Mix well and put into ice cube trays. Freeze until firm. Remove from freezer and put into a zip lock bag. Keep them in the freezer till ready to enjoy. This recipe makes about 24-28 chocolates. Hope you like them.
I think all of those suggestions will help in a pinch to get things started, but so much of managing this disease comes down to diet. By understanding how your body reacts to the foods you eat and also how foods impact the effectiveness of your medicine adjustments can be made to alleviate constipation and get the most out of the medicine you take. You may need to eliminate certain foods or time meals differently but for me it has been worth it.
will still swear by l-glutamine. also by DigestRC which increases motility. this from my husband who used to end up getting colonics and sometimes having to go to the ER for a major enema. after treating with glutamine, he has no more problem with constipation and doesn't even take it all the time.
Be careful with fiber- it must be very tiny particles or it can wrap up like a hairball and block the entrance from the stomach to the small intestine.
ever wonder why the BM is so large for many PDers? i think i finally found the answer. i read this somewhere and it makes sense to me: the motility is so slow, the food builds up and stretches the lower bowel, allowing a large diameter to accumulate.
With a little luck I found a supplement which is good for constipation and is good at stabilizing levodopa concentrations. The supplement is called Plantago Ovata Husk (Psyllium Husk) and here is the study which used stable levodopa/carbidopa patients to evaluate its effects:
"Study of the Modification of the Pharmacokinetic Profile of Levodopa by the Fiber Plantago Ovata Husk"
bmccomplementalternmed.biom...
"Constipation: Psyllium has long been used as a chief ingredient in "bulk laxatives." Generally, an increase in stool weight, an increase in bowel movements per day, and a decrease in total gut transit time has been observed in most studies. "
