It is really important to treat constipation, it interferes with absorption and can have serious consequences. My husband, after over 10 years suffering constipation with his PD, had emergency surgery to excise a portion of his large intestine because it became twisted and obstructed.

Eat as much fiber as possible. Oranges, prunes, oatmeal, etc. Treat the constipation with magnesium citrate, inexpensive, effective, no side effects.

I use a probiotic daily, and when times are tough, I also take chewable papaya tablets. I use both at bedtime. I also find that a bowl of oatmeal, or yogurt will help.

I suffer from constipation, too. I am careful with diet, drink lots of water, eat prunes, figs, oatmeal, lots of fruit and vegetables and fibre but still have problems. I mentioned it to Parkinson's nurse recently and she asked my GP to prescribe Bisacodyl 5 mg tablets which have proved to be very effective. At most I only need to take one or two once every week or ten days to get me back to "normal" again.

The gist is, as everyone said, water but how, you should drink lukewarm water as soon as you get up just pace around and drink if you can 4 glasses, slowly work your way, another thing to use would be Trifla a very inexpensive totally herbal powder very good for overall health besides your gut and lastly to eat very healthy. Good luck

Timely post. I was in the ER yesterday for this very thing. The doctor said Magnesium Citrate yesterday (I did and did) followed by another bottle in 2 days and Sinecot 2/day for 10 days (don't plan to do but instead what nurse suggests below).

When the nurse came to discharge me she said that many nurses and others have used the following with good success: 2-4 oz. of warm prune juice with a pat (tsp) of real butter 3 times per day. I'm going to try it at mealtimes and continue to take my 500 mg Magnesium soft gel in the morning. Happy "pooping" to all, I hope and pray. Sorry, couldn't resist. We laugh or cry don't we? Terri

Yes,coconut oil. In fact it works too well for me! Also you could try adding oat bran to your cereal.

I ended up going to a GI dr. He first had me do a colon cleanse. Like the stuff you drink prior to a colonoscopy. Once I was cleaned out I was instructed to take miralax twice a day. It's been great. First time I've ever been regular. Every morning.

I am told some people find it is effective to get up in the morning and drink water before eating anything until their system clears. It can be ten or more glasses of water you just keep drinking. I hope some of the suggestions have helped you.

Cheers

After trying umpteen laxatives available in US, obtained from vaidyaratnamoushadalaya... in India (Trichur,Kerala,India) a pulverized mixture of 3 fruits & 2 herbs, called Bruhat Triphala (Tri-three, phala-fruits)(Bruhat means strong). I take one TBSP dissolved in hot water & drink it after dinner @ night before going to bed. I have been on it for 3 yrs & it has never failed me. You can reduce the quantity, if you develop cramping and frequent loose stools. You have to get it thro DHL ( very expensive), but the medication is dead cheap! For a 2week supply, the price for a packet is $ 1 and 25 cents!! But, you must ask the pharmacist to insert inside the package, a prescription in your name so that the customs won't detain it as a contraband dope! The main three fruits are: Phyllanthus Emblica, Terminalia Chebula, Terminalia Bellarica & two herbs are Cassia Angustifolia, & Glycerrhiza Glabra.
