Nuggets36  That dose seems awfully high to me.

I was dx 6 years ago. I take 10/100 4x a day.

Bless you in finding out what might work better for you.

You can take them together - mucuna is just levodopa, and you are already taking plenty of carbidopa via the Sinemet. Are you taking the immediate release or the controlled release (CR) version of Sinemet?  In my experience the CR version is vastly better.

Have you tried to add either of the MAO-B inhibitors - Azilect or Seligilene?

Where are you getting the mp?  How do you know how much to take?  I'm up to 10 doses a day of 25/100 cl 1 azilect and 5 1/2 cl 25/100 cr. I've seen it on Amazon but very concerned about taking more Levadopa.  I'm trying to stay as natural as possible.  I would love to be able to give up the cl due to all the side effects.  I use cbd oil in between day and night. Thanks Judy

How much Macuna do you take?  I found 25% powder online as my gi tract is a mess and I'm trying to stay away from more pills.      I am also starting to experience more dyskenasia which I'm hoping may be alleviated by cutting back on the prescription  carbadopa/Levadopa. Thanks judy

Judy,  what benefit do you feel (if any) you are getting from using cbd oil?  I have looked into it for my husband, but the info that was available didn't suggest a greater benefit than he could get from just exercising a bit more.  Would like to hear your experience.

Judy

i started using the cbd oil maybe 2 years ago in weaker strengths.  i now use 500 mg pretty much all day.  i agree the exercise helps all, but now i have been unable to exercise as i was due to other health issues.  i have found the cbd oil has lifted my spirits, helped with dyskenasia, helped me sleep, helped with constipation and on occasion if the spasms weren't too severe, helped with those also.  the website healthyhemp.com where i purchase it from has a wealth of information.  also theroc.us/ is the realm of caring website associated with the stanley brothers, who are the gentlemen responsible for changing the life of the little girl charlotte who suffered from debilitating epileptic seizures almost to the point of dying.

it has no thc and is legal and natural.  i am constantly in pursuit of natural healthcare for this horrible disease.  the realm of caring customer reps are wonderful and compassionate.  they can also assist you in answering your questions.

i am in hopes of medical marijuana being legalized in my state as i feel progression of this disease will need thc in appropriate doses to help with symptoms.

let me give you another example of the benefit of this type of product.  our senior dog, who was struck by lightening 2 years prior to her passing recently, experienced seizures so i tried the cannapet, cbd for pets.  she also had grown a very large gland or node in her neck below her jaw.  the cannapet helped with the seizures for quite some time before we had to seek veterinary care.  suddenly we noticed after about a year, the growth had shrunk to almost nothing.  in retrospect, we noticed she started barking again, something apparently the growth was preventing.  we just thought it was due to her age and lack of strength.  even though her seizures progressed due to other health issues in her body, her last 2 years were filled with happiness and good spirits.  shortly after we would give her the cannapet, she would become like a puppy.  we feel it combated pain in her legs, helped her have an appetite, feel confident and more quality of life.

i have just experienced and heard of too many positive responses to this type of treatment.  good luck in your quest. i know how hard it is to decide which treatment is best.  i have been through clinical trials from day one diagnosis.  i have been on different agonists, unsuccessfully.

that is why i asked you about the macuna puriens which i just recently found in my research.  thanks judy

Hi Judy,

I got mine on Amazon, Source Naturals brand, says it has 100mg levodopa.  So same amount of levodopa as one of your C/L doses.  You probably don't need as much carbidopa as you are getting so you might be able to substitute some of these for some of the C/L.

Thank you so much. I will look into it.

Littlerody profile image
Littlerody in reply topark_bear

I found a powder that says its 25% Levadopa.  How does that convert to gms? Thanks Judy

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply toLittlerody

To use this you would need to acquire a scale which measures milligrams. These are readily available on Amazon in electronic form. For a 25% powder you would then measure out 4x ( =1 / .25) the desired dosage.

Littlerody profile image
Littlerody in reply topark_bear

I think I already asked you this lol. How do I convert the powder on the scale?  I'm not understanding your equation.  Thanks judy

Lor7 profile image
Lor7 in reply toLittlerody

If the packet states how many mgs or grams it contains then using that figure eg let's say it contains 100 grams  multiply by 25% and that will = the total grams of Levadopa in the packet which would be 25 grams.  The same will apply if it is mgs.  So when measuring using your scales the weight you place on the scales by x 25% and this will give you the answer.  Effectively 25% of the weight equals the amount of Levadopa.  Hope that makes sense!

Littlerody profile image
Littlerody in reply toLor7

When I get the scale and powder I'll let you know lol. Is the benefit of this so as not to take carbadopa?

Also will it cause dyskenasia like the synthetic?

Lor7 profile image
Lor7 in reply toLittlerody

Hi Littlerody

I don't know if it will cause dyskinesia as I have just today received my Mecuna capsules (100mg Levadopa).  I believe the Carbadadopa is to alleviate the nausea and help the synthetic Levadopa to work.

I really hope it doesn't cause it as I am trying Mecuna for RLS which has not been helped by any medication I have received so far including Sinemet.  That and all the Parkinson's meds I have had have caused me to suffer with immediate dyskinesia!!  I have read a couple of articles here and there that mention this natural form doesn't which is why I am going to give it a go.  I am so desperate for some full proper sleep I will try almost anything!  I have a feeling that if the other meds didn't do the trick this won't but fingers crossed.

Let me know how you get on.

Littlerody profile image
Littlerody in reply toLor7

I also read today that  the natural ldopa should not cause dyskenasia.   I too am having probleMs with that. Do you also take mirapex or requip?  I've read in the past they can also cause rls. Let me know how you do with the mp. I ordered the powder as I have many gi tract problems already.  Didn't want to put anymore pills in it. Also I'm hoping it metabolizes quicker  in a drink.  Good luck keep me posted and I'll try to do the same. Judy.

Lor7 profile image
Lor7 in reply toLittlerody

I have had RLS for around 25 years.  I was  prescribed Clonazepam at the time which worked really well for 10 years and then I became tolerant.  Dose was increased but not much better and didn't want to keep increasing.  RLS has got worse over the years and for the last 15 years haven't had much sleep but have tried all off licence meds my GP will allow, these included Mirapex and Requip (ropinerole).  These two meds are given to treat RLS and work for a lot of people (including my father).  They are supposed to increase dopamine too but immediately caused dyskinesia for me, although I put up with that for a few weeks with each med, it was horrible, whole body and limbs jerking and almost mademe sit upright in bed

I intend opening the capsule and taking half the powder in there to start with, so here's hoping!  Hope it works well for you  so let me know how you get on.

Littlerody profile image
Littlerody in reply toLor7

The mirapex made me fall asleep in mid conversation and after a year my ankles swelled. Mind you I was still working. Neuproatch did the same thing after a year.  I've been on just sinnemet sinnemet er and azilect. I use the cbd oil in between. Left work 4 years after diagnosis as I couldn't keep up with Meds and trying to care for myself.  I'm hoping to figure out the Macuna so I can also get off some of the synthetic  killing my gi tract. Good luck Judy.

Lor7 profile image
Lor7 in reply toLittlerody

Luckily I din't have that problem. with Mirapex.   So have you RLS or PD?  Did the cbd oil work?  Tried the Mecuna last night 1/2 capsule in some water (50mg LD) not singing its praises just yet, but I actually slept for five hours usually just 2-3.  Then, I took one clonazepam (just to stop me stressing about being awake) as I couldn't be bothered to go down to the kitchen and open up another capsule, although tonight I will take half in water and take the other that to bed with me.  I do know that taking Levedopa will eventually cause augmentation if taken every night but not if only taken 2-3 nights per week.  So  I will stick to that if it works.  Must say, I have a head ache this morning though!

As for your Mecuna the total weight of the bag x the percentage it states will give you the total LD weight.  Whatever amount you weigh out also x by the percentage and that will give you the LD amount you have weighed.

I look back over my life and see the minor makings of pd. Always had rls as far back as I can remember a young girl. When the pd symptoms really kicked in the rls got worse. Now I have dyskenasia from all sinnemet. The cbd oil has up to this point helped me sleep keeps the vivid dreams at bay helps with the gi tract and is somewhat uplifting. No thc just straight hemp oil I use 500 mg all day and night in between my Meds. Good luck. Judy

Hi park_bear. Can you help me out? I received Dopa Macuna 15% L-Dopa today. I want to begin taking it in an attempt to see if this alone will replace the Carbidopa that I currently take 2 times a day each measured at 25-100. Do you have any suggestions on how I can take it? I currently take one Carbidopa at 7 AM and the last one at 1 or 2 PM. Should I take one Carbidopa at 7 and the Dopa Macuna at 2 PM? Is this amount of Dopa Macuna too much levadopa? I’m concerned of too much exposure to levadopa and development of dyskenisia. Have you taken Dopa Macuna and how has it worked for you? Is Dopa Macuna levadopa?

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply toprocaffeinator

There is good evidence that progression of Parkinson's is the cause of eventual dyskinesia rather than exposure to levodopa. As to mucuna, I do not have personal experience with mucuna. I suggest you post this question as separate topic - that way it will get more attention and hopefully get answers.

procaffeinator profile image
procaffeinator in reply topark_bear

I did post it to the site and only one person was kind enough to reply but it was a very brief reply stating to search for Macuna Pruriens and I found this topic. The neurologist stated that too much exposure to levadopa causes dyskenisia Your reply gave me hope you might have an answer or simply some information. I was wrong.

Astra7 profile image
Astra7 in reply toprocaffeinator

I think your neuro is wrong according to many things I have read. It's the disease progression that causes the dyskinesia.

I havnt tried the macuna as I can't work out the required dose. Have you?

procaffeinator profile image
procaffeinator in reply toAstra7

I’m trying to figure it out as well. This is her reply to me.

Macuna pruriens contains levodopa and that is why patients with Parkinson`s feel better with it. It does not affect the progression of the disease. If you are feeling well with the carbidopa-levodopa you are taking now, I would not recommend you to take additionally the Macuna. This will increase your exposure to levodopa and increase your risk to develop dyskinesias sooner. If your symptoms are not well controlled with the carbidopa-levodopa, then it is preferable to make changes in the medication rather than taking the Macuna, as the tablet has a more predictable effect compared to what we see with Macuna.

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply toprocaffeinator

One more bit of advice I can offer is levodopa in its various forms, mucuna or Sinemet, is purely for symptomatic relief. So you can experiment and find out for yourself what works best.

Try to calculate the MP dose by trial your self to adjust your activity & level of PD.I take 6gm of MP(Freshly prepred ,not more than 6 months old) equivalent to one Sinemet plus tablet of 100/25.I take 2 doses of sinemet and 2 doses of MP per day at with an intrval of 4 hours. It is working for me.

Hi muragod, you write that you take 2 doses of sinemet (200mg) and 2 doses of MP (200mg or 100mg?) ..... PER DAY..... with an interval of 4 hours. I am confused. How do you divide it up at intervals of four hours? Did you mean that was one dosage and not PER DAY?

How many dosages per day do you take?

Each dosage of MP equals how many mg of sinemet?

Each dosage of sinemet I interpret to be 200mg. Correct?

I am asking because I am currently trying to switch my son to less Sinemet and add MP. His past dosage was 2.5 C/L tabs (250mg) three times daily. He has only been DX less than two years and I think he is overdosed. Currently have his dosage at 1 tab of C/L (100mg) + equivalent of 160mg of MP capsules. I'm thinking that MP should be less as I have read that 2 to 3 times more potent than C/L.

He takes his dosages at 6AM, 10:30AM, 3pm.

During this switch he is having a difficult time with his walking and anxiety, and breaking out in perspiration.

How did you arrive at your dosage? Did you start with the Sinemet or with the MP? Thank you!!

muragod profile image

I take sinemet at 0930,1700 and MP at 1300,2100 and sinemet CR at 0330hrs.

My wife takes Sinemet Plus 25mg/100mg.  08.00 - 2 sinemet.  Noon 1 sinemet.  16.00 2 sinemet & 20.00 2 sinemet.  She also takes Mucuna Pruries : 2x 250mg at 08.00 and a further 2x250mg at noon.   The Pruies effectivly controlles the 'Pisa' syndrom and improves her posture when standing - much less of a stoop.  There have been no side effects.   She is alsoon Rivastigmine 3mg twice a day.  Rotigotine 8mg/24hr patch. Amaantadine 100mg capsules once a day = Antorvastatin 10mg at night.  My wife has had Parkingsons for some 15 years.   The physical aspects were OK.   The dementia of the past three years have been much more difficult.

How old was your wife when first diagnosed with PD?

lazyrideruk profile image
lazyrideruk in reply toenjoysalud

About 64.   She was playing golf 7 years ago and driving up to 3 years ago.  She had a fall (tripped over by grandson!) and broke her hip 4 years ago.  That really put the Parkinsons into overdrive!   I think the pain killers and morphen clashed with her Parkinsons medication. I managed to get her Parkinsons nurse onto her ward, she changed the pain killers and also one of her Parkinsons drugs.  but I think the initial damage had been done.   She was diagnosed with Parkinsons dementia two years ago.

I took a much higher dose of mucuna pruriens at the same time I was taking ropinirole, which is generic for Requip.  No problems.  Mucuna is a natural bean--food!  It just happens to be high in L-Dopa.  I have taken 15% MP, 40% MP, now 98%MP, and I need nothing else with it--no drugs.  It supplies my brain (along with bis-glycinate iron) with all I need to sleep at night.

No. I take no prescription medication.  For four hours after I take the dosage I've figured out for me, I sleep without any symptoms of RLS.  After four hours, I feel the symptoms coming back, so I get up and take the next dose and sleep for four more hours without interruption.  The only downfall is that I don't sleep through the night.  I may try the relaxis pad to see if I can get a continuous night's sleep.  But for now, I'm managing RLS (after 40 years of suffering)
