I would highly recommend exercise. If you can find something you enjoy or have a passion for is key. Any exercise I feel will benifical. I play tennis most days even twice. I started just before being diagnosed. I love tennis. I try to be active playing chess, snooker, your never to late to learn anything
Exercise no.1 : I would highly recommend... - Cure Parkinson's

Rock Steady Boxing -- YES! I can't say enough about it! It's a real upbeat, high-energy environment. Toward the end of the session, I'm wishing the staff would roll out cots and call Nap Time, but as tiring as it is, I found I could power on a lot longer with the company of other folks (all are PwP) than I can alone. The coaches are terrific, really encouraging. I'll go to my third session tomorrow (Sunday).
There is no hitting or other contact. While most fitness programs have the goal of getting your heart rate up and keeping it up for at least 20 minutes, Rock Steady gets participants to work out vigorously in two- to three-minutes spurts with short rests in between -- just like in boxing matches, where the rounds are short. This kind of exercise turns out to have neuro-protective benefits. Who knew?
Well, lots of people, duh. But it was news to me. No way did I expect it to be this much fun!
Hi Beckey, i can sense your passionate about rocksteady boxing. Would you believe I was a amateurs and professional boxer. Try some skipping. I do ,I feel it will be good for balance. Go for it, your never to late to try new stuff. It keeps you young at heart and mind.

Hi Becky , I've just watched my father, brother and I it was very good thanks for link and putting it out there.
You're so welcome. I'm in pretty bad shape boxing-wise -- I used to love to jump rope when I was young but I can't get off the ground anymore! But I'll stay with it. Thanks for the props!
i wish we have it in my state!
Try crossfit they are all all over the place.
your results are very impressive! I have membership to a fitness club - and they have only time available for crossfit beginners 5:30 am! with all my efforts - i am not functioning at all at 5am! is it my lousy excuse ?
What state is that, Viva?
Beckey, it's KS
I will ask these folks about plans for KS
thanks, Beckey! that'd be great!
Hi Viva. I got this reply from Rock Steady Boxing today. An affiliate is soon to open up in Wichita. The person I am in touch with suggested that you check the main RSB website (rocksteadyboxing.org) over the next couple of months to see if it's up and running yet. And "also, keep in mind that anyone (a trainer, someone who doesn't know boxing, a person with PD) can attend the RSB Training Camp to bring a program to their community."
You're dead on - keep moving!
Becky:
I knew you would love Rock Steady!
Viva:
I, too, will check to see I Kansas City has plans for a Rock Steady. I live in Indy & am one of the "pioneers" (started Jan 2007). Two weeks ago they trained 57 people & next week there will also be a class with close to that amount also. I will see what I can find out.
Thank you, laglag, for your support! that is a hope. I, probably, also can contact them (website), but if you hear something about KS, that will be helpful. I cannot wait to try RSB!
You're quite welcome! Great news....this gal has already opened a place in Overland Park. I don't totally understand the affiliate process, I think their is a yearly fee to use the name "Rock Steady Boxing" so she is using the name "In Your Corner". Her name is Sarrisa Curry. She said to give her a call. I believe she'll be in training class today & tomorrow, but you can call & leave her a message or call her Monday. In the meantime you can look it up on facebook. Here is the info:

Hope you enjoy it! I've been with RSB over 9 years & diagnosed 13 years & most people cannot tell I have PD & I truly believe RSB has been the key. If you decide to participate, let me know how you like it. Last night there were 30 some boxers & 60 trainees. It was crazy fun, but it was definitely a good kind of crazy fun!
wow, laglag, it is true it's hard to believe you have pd - you ARE fast! thank you again for your support. you are an inspiration to me, like many people of this site. I will let you know about my decision, I cannot wait to talk to this lady.
Viva: I'm fast because I truly believe in this program & I don't want you to miss out. I can't believe you asked about it & bam! there was someone there from your area last night! Things happen for a reason!!
Keep fighting!

Beckey & Viva: I sent your question to one of the head trainers, Christine & here is the reply from her assistant:
Christine forwarded me your email about affiliate locations in Kansas City, KS. We have a couple folks coming from the Kansas City area this weekend! They are in Overland Park, KS and Prairie Village, KS – not too far from KC, KS. We will have their information up on our website if they become affiliates. I can forward their info as well – if they affiliate at Training Camp.
Hope these are close to you.
Debbie (laglag)
Laglag, I lived in Lawrence, Kansas for two years while my husband finished his Phd. We are still connected to the area because our son married a woman from Overland Park and we have visited her mother a few times who still lives in the area. It was exciting living there with several tornado scares. By the way, now I live in the Chattanooga area and we are waiting for a RSB affiliate to open sometime next month!
HopeDope:
Great! I went to "Training Camp" last night & there was someone there from Overland Park that has opened a RSB but they chose to name it "In Your Corner" so I sent the info to Viva. I'm so glad there is going to be an RSB affiliate in Chattanooga. I hope you will join. I'm sure you will love it. There was a boxer last night that travels 1 1/2 hours to attend because he enjoys it so much. Let me know if you join & how you like it. Take care & keep fighting!!
Thanks. I thought you lived in Kansas City but looked at your testimonial on RSB's site and realize you live in Indy. It's Viva that lives in Kansas City, I guess. Our RSB will have only a few classes at first which overlap with my Pedal4PD classes (but maybe I'll pedal at night instead). You are lucky to live in Indy where I think the RSB headquarters is.
Yes I,m lucky to be in Indy & lucky to have been with the program since nearly the start. But the affiliates are going to be good too! The trainers are the original coaches so they know what they're doing & want to help as many people as possible.
