You need to do strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular. Yoga is good for flexibility while Tai Chi is good for balance. But really anything dance, bike riding etc. that keeps you moving will benefit you. Good Luck.

I am a great believer in exercise. Well, we have to believe in something. I walk a lot, try to follow a Tai Chi DVD, do a Rosemary Conley DVD and have a Wii Fit. I don't do these all in one day, but alternate. When using the Wii I either do aerobics - need to lose weight - or Yoga. I find the Wii good as I love the comments from my Personal Trainer! Also I can keep track of my progress, or otherwise.

Regarding Tai Chi - the DVD is beyond me so am looking for a class that would be suitable for me. Good Luck.

I love mine. It has so many varied programmes and the comments are so funny. It also caters for different levels and abilities. It does a weight and BMI check and tells you off if you miss a day. It nearly exploded when I missed 21 days!!

Regarding the Tai Chi, I think there is a class in our village and a friend has said she will come with me. Having said that, don't know if she could fit it in to her busy life. But I will make enquiries.

Can't make head or tail of the DVD.

(still no smiley face)

I agree. Even if exercise doens't slow down the disease it sure makes me feel better. I started out going tp a strteching class, doing Yoga, going to the city pool for aqua therapy, going to work outs at the gym, and walking. OVer the 12 years since my diagnosis, I sure know when I miss a work out. It isn't easy to get going when you wake up in the morning but get up and mover! IT is wonderful.

Hi mitchdee, my neuro told me the the most important thing I could do for myself is exercise, exercise, exercise! Got to keep moving to slow down the progression of the disease. I attended my first PD support group meeting recently. The one topic that kept resounding was EXERCISE! I have days that I don't want to do it; but am glad that I did afterwards because I feel so much better. Best wishes to you!

i havent gone to a support group yet was only diagnoised month ago and my support worker thinks its too early for me as my symptoms are mild. ive to give myself time to get my head round this, ive found this site brilliant, everyone reinforces the positive way i intend to deal with pd

Hi mitchdee, I am a newbie too with mild symptoms. I was diagnosed in July 2011; however, I got a 2nd opinion Dec 1, 2011 which confirmed the original diagnosis. I still haven't gotten my head around this. I have good days and bad days. I understand about the support group. It was difficult for me to go to my first support group meeting. You have no idea how hard it was for me to walk into the meeting alone; but I did it. The meeting was very informative; but I have to admit it was also upsetting. Anyway, I wish the best for you.

Take care,

Cheri :)

thank you for taking the time to reply. have you had the brain scans done. im waiting to go for them.. its just that in my area in scotland there are so many advanced cases. i asked my support worker why this is, the west of scotland is where everyone wants to retire, golf country... i think everyone thinks this is old persons disease,,, think we all have highs and lows, this is where this site helps...

All of the above. However in my Parkie movement class yesterday our teacher (who has PD and teaches at Mark Morris in Brooklyn) said some research showed WALKING most effective. I will check on this and get back. I like pilates because I do it lying down (haha)

I use WII and find it is tons better than not exercising but not as much as a work out as doing the real sports. Great for those times you want exercise diversity and are having bad weather issues.

Or move here to Bisbee, 330+ days of Sunshine per year, along with mild winters and summers. (66 degrees F at the moment.)

lucky you but think i would miss the beautiful walks here in scotland, but some sunshine would be lovely. mind you its not the first time a walk has been cancelled due to gaile force winds and rain. i live on the west coast golf country

I go swimming and walking, I suppose I am lucky really as I still have co - ordination, also I live in a rural place where walking is pleasant due to the lovely scenery. But any sort of exercise be it walking, swimming, dancing , gardening etc is good for you. Keep going for as long as possible!!

My daughter gave me a DVD that has both standing and seated TaiChi (for those, like me, who have serious balance issues. I love(d) riding my bike but now am concerned whether I could maintain my balance.

mitchdee profile image
mitchdee in reply toThumbpick

your daughter obviously cares, im single no kids but familly and friends are more concered about this than me, i forget it must be hard for them. only been a month ive been dx. all i would like to think is if i enjoyed my bike (mountain one in hut rusting ) i would still go but just wear extra padding, if its a motor bike you have just go slow ,,, ways round everything,

I found exercise to be amazingly helpful...even though I don't look forward to doing it I'm always grateful when I do.

I am blessed to have a neighbor who exercises along with me and encourages me daily.

I have a DVD for walking and an Xbox.

Go for an hour long walk every day. Avoid ALL junk food.

Move it Move it

Do what you like to do - alone or with exercise buddies.

If not , you are less likely to make a routine of exercise.

I have standing appointments for walking with a friend (twice a week) that only gets cancelled for lightning or out of town guests.

I did this in California for 8 years and when I moved I immediately found a walking buddy I could join up with .

I also have a large yard that keeps me busy and a dog to keep me movin'

and a daughter who won't give up telling me to do yoga and Tai Chi (No convenient classes for me -saw the other post and looking at getting DVDs)

Move it or lose it.

Aloha Jill
