Foot and thumb cramp etc.

Hi

I met a neurologist about a year ago who put me on Sinemet then wanted to increase the strength. He mentioned dopa reponsive dystonia. I didn't like the idea of the increase and asked for another opinion. (Still waiting and will see the new neurogist in a month). So not taking the sinemet at the moment but it did improve things at the time.

There are lots of things going on and do these sound familar to you?

I still have foot cramps in the arch of the feet which can be painful but only for a short time. Hands cramp when holding things. My shoulder is very painful and stiff. The arm on the same side is sometimes totally numb when I wake and need to move it with my other arm first thing in the morning then it quickly comes back to normal. Lots of buzzing going on around the body mainly in the upper thighs and above knees. Generally stiff and tired.

My legs and arms don't seem to have much strength when bending or holding something heavy. Very frustrating and find it difficult to stand up after sitting on the sofa. Harder more upright chairs no problem just the lower softer ones take lots of effort and need my arms to push up. Once I am up I am away.

Many thanks.

If your symptoms improved with Sinemet then Pd is usually indicated. My neuro told me 8 years ago 'stay under medicated '! He started a great exercise research program and only exercise has proven to be neuro protective. Classes for pwp's address all the problems you mention. Good luck and stay in touch

I tend to agree with PatV on this one. My neurologist put me on Azilect first to see how I responded - his strategy is to avoid the dopamine drugs (agonists and levodopa) for as long as possible. Azilect is an MAO-B inhibitor which means that it entends the natural life of your own naturally produced dopamine. I get cramps too but they're not too bad. I tend to use a magnesium spray for them.

To medicate, or not to medicate, that is the question.....

Only you can say if you can live a full and happy life without an increase in your meds. If you have Dystonia which is affecting your life and giving you daily pain,; well that would be enough for me to up the meds.

Not what you're looking for?
