yes that is why I switched to a small SUV. Because it is higher,it is easier.

its a bit weird this , i find that when i am driving iam in controle no shake , just focused , however when i get out am all over the place , its mad this PD , takes over your life then spits in your face when you try to control it, although i can still drive ( just now) dont know for how long , but who does ? , and like you i find it a pain getting in and out of the car , my licence has been restricted and i have to have a medical every 2 years, so i will make hay while the sun shines as they say.

But this PD will not get me nor will it break me .

so it lets have a drink be merry and look forward to our party on the 14th , iv got a wee suprise in store for the big night

Love you all

SMART ALECK ANSWER WARNING!!! (A real answer will follow!)

Q: Does anyone find it difficult geting out of a car and putting on a seat belt?

A: I did, but I since have discovered that it is much easier to put the seatbelt on after getting INTO the car! ;-)

(Sorry, I'm working on maintaining a sense of humor!)

Yes, it is tough! Tougher in some vehicles for sure. Like Jerebet said: I too find that it is much easier in a small suv (Honda Element in my case.) Then like Ronn said it does seem to take me forever in other (shorter especially)vehicles.

Then like Al's comment: Wierd stuff indeed thid PD! I too, find that my tremor diminshes or goes away when I am driving...BUT, I have had the cops pull me over 2X of recent for swerving in my lane. Never bad enough to enter someone elses lane but simply using Most of my lane. I do much better on my trike! I just recently had the opportunity to take an online course that focused on PD and driving and had some suggestions as to how and when we know that time has come that we should hang up our car keys. It is available online to watch at a convenient time for you.

If that doesnt work, try copying and pasting it into your browser.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mate,

i got pulled a few weeks ago by Strathclydes finest , it was 2 am gmt , could not sleep so decided to get some fule for Laraine's car to save her some time in the morning befor she ent to work,

well

here we go

the petrol station is about 10 mins drive from our house , so off i went all well got the petrol, it was a very windy and the rain was pouring down , roads were flooding and i went straight in to a big puddell , car ground to a halt what will i do so next i see in the rear view mirror the dreded blue flashing lights and at that time in the morning only means one thigh the Traffic cops the scurge of scotland,

here we go i said to my self, got out the car befor they draged me out.

You been drinking Sir , this young cop said , no was my reply, well you look a bit shaky on your feet he said , i thiougt Albert Instine Here , no officer i have Parkinson's , blank expresion on his mug, just sit in the back of the car smart arse he said, so off i went in to back of car, have you been drinkin he said agin, no me i said , well just blow in to this bag and well see, so i duly did what i was asked , and it showed up no booz, well what this Parkinson's all about , tryed to explain , however fell on deaf ears, so showed them my PD card which explains what i told them , any way the both bid me a good night and legged it ,

really dont know where iam going with this ,

I agree. It's much more difficult to get in the car. I feel like my feet are glued to the ground when I try to turn around. Does anyone have a solution?

dang, you beat me to that punch line

Well I'm sure if anyone watches me getting in and out of my TT they must have a howl - I kind if pour myself in and fall out - but I will not let this parkie deny me of my fun in my little red devil! I agree tho Al it's amazing that all tremors dissapear when I am driving and I am completely focused. Stupid stupid parkie. xxxx

Well it cheers me to see you are keeping going st it! I share a mini cooper with my son and its hard when pavement slopes down to push car door up and out. I hate it when people trest you like an invalid but feel frustrated when asking others for help. Some bottles , lids of jars and containers are very hard to screw or pull off..difficult when you are used to being so independent.

Do you know what pisses me off , i have a disable parking blue badge , and al though i dont look as if ian totaly disadled , i get snid comments and looks that woud kill, when i park up and put my badge on the dash ( i have a Chrysler 300c ) some shake ther heads , and as i get out iam shaking any way, just a few weeks ago i was parking in Glasgow and put my badge up , just as i did this a parking attendant, asked me if it was my badge , yes i said and showed him the photo on the badge, he said " you dont look to disabled to me" so i said well when did you get pass your medical degree , people are so judge mental these days , yes i agree i dont look disabled , but i can hardly walk the lenght of my self , and if these peps had to live a day in our shoes they would change ther attitudes

just a wee grumble on a friday

hope you all have a great weekend

lots of love

It takes all kinds, I just ignore them and go about my business. If I'm feeling particularly pissey I say "really? would you like to walk in my shoes for 24 hours?"

Goinf for a walk be back in about 1 hr , should be 10 mins.

Ah PD what a wonderful and colour full life we live

Al

I have great difficulty getting my husband in and out of a car especially lower ones . I find it a little easier if you get in off the road not the pavement . .

Unfortunatley he doesnt drive any more , neither do I hence onine shopping these days .

When he was driving I started to worry that he was switching off /losing concentration . sometimes he did , but other times when he had an emergency his reaction were still pretty quick . The big problem that got much worse was when he started to drift to the centre of the road or hit the kerb when going round corners ( SPACIAL AWARENESS )

It was not nice when I had to eventually tell him what was happening . (HE COULDNT SEE IT HIMSELF ) It got so bad one day as he was going around the corner he ended up driving along on the wrong side of the road , with my heart in my mouth .

SO PLEASE TAKE HEED IF A PASSENGER /FAMILY TELL YOU THIS .

We got seat belt extensions from Ford for our cars. It is easier to find the clip and you don't have to reach all the way down to the seat. They are free. Also try sitting down and then swivel in the seat so you are facing forward and lift one foot in at a time. That may help. Do the reverse to get out.

Wheyyy I love the real life incidents.

I got a good mouthful off a elderly lady who told me off for using the disabled toilets in a store. I smiled sweetly and asked if her mother had ever taught her manners. Before she could reply I gave her my card which I had adapted for the use of handing out to people who question me when using the disabled facilities, toilets, car parking, lifts etc. The card read "Yes I too cannot understand why God would want to give someone so beautiful a incurable debilitating Neurological condition, but then again I guess it was payment. for my good looks. !!

or

I too cannot believe someone so young could possibly be disabled. However sad but true. I was being nosey just like you, when God was having a private conversation and listerned in.

So it's my own fault i'm disabled because I'd overheard who he was going to give Parkinson's too and I knew that person wouldn't be able to cope, so I offered to take it instead..

So if you'd like to swop ? Cos I wouldn't mind walking further to the toilet because then I'd know I was cured !!

Depending on how I was feeling I had funny, good natured and bugger off cards to choose from. The ones above are just for effect ! I'm not that rude but you get my drift anyway's. Night night sleep tight x

Maybe it was the same lovely old "B" that scolded me for using the Handicapped toilet.

I calmly smiled and said, Ma'am not all handicaps are visual..........like a old woman who shouts at people in public. now that is visual......so I am so sorry I took your SEAT.

God bless and hopefully you will find a cure for your rudeness, as what I have there is yet to be a cure. how fortunate you are............and I turned and walked away, and I heard her say to someone, how rude I was....LOL

'Wifeofparky', thanks for that. I had the same problem with seat belts for years without knowing about extensions but my new car is much better as the belt clip is attached to the seat & moves with it to suit changes of driver. Have you come across plates which can be fitted under front seats so the seats can rotate outwards thus avoiding the need to move the legs & feet? I find them really helpful. Re people being rude or inconsiderate about use of special facilities - these folk will always have a target for their barbs. They are life's inadequates, usually bears of very little brain, who need to bully to get their jollies. How sad is that??

we drive an SUV a big Expedition and my husband the one with Parkinsons does not drive anymore(thats a sad story for another time) be he was having problems getting into the car, so we ordered a *TURNEY SEAT* it looks just like the seat that was built in the car, but with a remote you can make the chair turn, slide out ,then lower to the hight you need in our case it is 15 inches off the ground, he then sits and the seat lifts, turns and slides into the original spot so he is sitting as anyother passinger in the car would be.. as far as the seat belt *I* do it for him, it gives me a chance to kiss him after and make sure there are no smudges on his face from what ever he may have been nibbling on...

Thanks for sharing this with me. At present i am being driven round in cars looking at property for sale and I feel so embarrassed struggling to get out of the car. I hate being treated like an invalid when they rush round to help me.

my wife has a small car, to hard to get in andout. i kind of fall into it and then have to hold on the door and roll out with my shoulder and back on the b pillar and push up. that the reason that 99% of the time i drve my TAHOE. much easier to climb in and then slide out. if ppl understood pd they may not understan that you may walk in nnormally and need the shopping cart to get out.

yes, but we must be careful of what we put into the column marked PD and what we chalk up simply to human nature and age/activity. This is what I dislike about these type of sharing. If I ask the question I'm sure someone would support the fact that this hangnail I have is a result of my PD. There's a good chance someone could string together a list of events and in a true lawyer type fashion connecting the two with a thin thread and sell it to others hunting for a reason they have a hangnail.

Not what you're looking for?
