Mannitol - Is anyone taking it on a daily basis?

When I began my PD journey Mannitol was talked about alot. I haven't heard too much about it since and wanted to poll the HU audience so see if people are still using it, and if they find it helpful.

"What effect does mannitol have on the gut?

Having too much may cause gastrointestinal discomfort including bloating, gas and diarrhea. But these effects may not be the same for everyone. Therefore, the FDA requires a label statement regarding potential laxative effects for foods that might result in consuming 20 grams of mannitol in a day"

"Sorbitol, Mannitol, Maltitol and Erythritol are different types Polyols - sugar-free sweeteners. They are also called 'sugar alcohols' because their chemical structure resembles partly sugar and partly alcohol but they have nothing to do either with sugar or alcohol. Polyols are a particular type of carbohydrate"

Thank you so much for this useful info. I remember having stomach upset when I used to take it... and that was only 1 tbsp

I used to regularly take it before Covid and it helped me get better symptom control. However, during and after Covid the availability of reputable and affordable Mannitol dwindled and I gave up. Recently, I read some article on the safety profile of some sugar alcohols to be a matter of concern. I have not been able to research more about Mannitol since.

I would say that my experience has been positive..

Missy, my husband has been taking it for 4-5 years, and it has improved his smell immensely. He couldn't smell anything before PD.

I've been taking it since (I think) 2020. It helps a LOT with my mood and fatigue, and just a little with my sense of smell. If I skip it for more than a few days, I begin to get depressed and weepy. It doesn't seem to affect my motor symptoms at all.

I’ve been taking it regularly for about a year. I buy the powder from Israel. It’s expensive, but it really helped my sense of smell. I also have cut way back on my Rytary dosages as it seems to help slow my progression. I take a tablespoon every morning in my coffee.

What brand and where do you buy it?

top-probiotics.com/mannitol... and mannitolbalance.com were the two sources I used

I buy it on Amazon and it’s made by Homeotreat Lab, about $54 per container

I likely bought the same one. Cost me a bundle to bring in to Canada but I think I have been convinced to try it again. Thank you

I'm taking 1 teaspoon + in A.M. Not sure of impact, take it by faith, imagining those mis-folded proteins straightening out. Started in 2016 - was taking 1.5 T/day and was advised by an Israeli group at WPC2016 to reduce intake to 1.5 t (weight 100 lbs) Took for probably 3-4 years since then...the last year for sure. Perhaps I should increase it again. When I increase, it gives me gas, but I've managed that in the past with alpha-galactosidase (Bean-O)

I like your response :) I will try to imagine that too!

Hi Missy. I have been taking Mannitol since 2020 but hard to see clear evidence of real benefits. Probably helped me regain my sense of smell though.

That was the first thing I noticed when I began as well Michel. Thank you

An acquaintance claimed it made his tremors worse. I didn't notice any difference but others experiences in this thread have encouraged me to do some more experimenting. A reliable source of Mannitol at a realistic price is:
