I need to know if there are others who have developed compulsive behaviors since being treated for Parkinson's.

As well as replies here you may like to do a search using the word compulsive. Some previous posts will come up.
I have developed compulsive eating which has added 50 lbs to my weight in just 2 years. I even eat when nauseous . Doctors should alert us in advance to this uncontrollable side effect. I said so to a reporter that interviewed me last week. I hope it is mentioned in the final article. We PARKIES need to make the world more knowledgable about our pd and medication side effects. I have had a lot of unpleasant surprises that people without pd don't relate to. I am very grateful this site exists.
Sassynailart, Meet another PD compulsive eater. I've been diagnosed nearly 8 yrs & Requip XL 16mgs daily has been my main med. It has been great apart from this compulsion. I'm having hypnotherapy but this has made no significant improvement so I'm very slowly coming off it. I recently started taking Sinemet (Co-careldopa) so I'm hoping to see some improvement.
I have been taking Mirapex for years to help control my leg and arm jerks and I am thankful that it works but in the beginning I developed compulsive shopping.
compulsive traits are accentuated with this drug. I managed to get myself some 8 thousand dollars in debt from Internet shopping. My Doctor and I decided to take me off the Mirapex and see if I could manage without it, I could not. So now I have to make myself aware of the pull and the magical high I get when I shop. I still look at the shopping site and sometimes even put things in my cart but I never complete the transaction. I do know others who cannot control thier compulsive behaviors from this drug. There is a class action law suit out there against the makers of Mirapex stating they knew beforehand about the compulsive behaviors but did not share it with the public.
Anyway, I'm babbling! Hope my story helps!
It is terrible to hear of your story. i did the same thing only I spent money I had in my savings., now I have none. The guilt and stupidity I feel are tough to deal with. The really sad thing is that I litterally cannot be off the Mirapex. I become stiff to the point of not being able to function at all. And the restless leg and arm movements are horrendous. I too have controlled myself....to a point!
I would love to hear more of this class action suit if you know more.
By the way, you certainly were not babbling, thankyou for sharing!!
Here is a link to one of many websites I found when I googled Mirapex and Class actio lawsuit together. One is probalbly just as good lawyersandsettlements.com/c... another...
Wishing You a Great Day!
I too was on Mirapex for years. No compulsive behavior (that I was aware of) but it did cause my legs to swell. Plus it was very expensive! Doc switched me to generic SINEMET and I lost 45 pounds in 5 months, which I needed to do. I have no regrets about going off Mirapex
Hello, did you have withdrawls? I have been on Mirapex for two years, my ankles are the size of my head! Tried to ween off it and felt like I was having a stroke for two days. Finally just started back on it so I could stop crying. Did you have any problems? I really want off this med and get back to the job of having good ankles and feet,
FYI
Shortage of Parkinson's Drug May Increase Use of Mirapex
August 20, 2010, 06:00:00AM. By Charles Benson Email
Whitehouse Station, NJ: The deadline recently passed for pharmaceutical giant Merck to explain why it stopped manufacturing the Parkinson's disease drug Sinemet. The shortage of cheap generic alternatives like Sinemet may lead to an increase in demand for Boehringer Ingelheim's Parkinson's medication Mirapex, which has been linked to gambling addiction and other compulsive behavior, according to CBS's bnet.
Merck has declined to comment any further on its stoppage of production, except to say that it has done so to receive regulatory approval for a "supply change," reports the news provider.
The drug maker said it was trying to get the medication back into pharmacies as soon as it could.
"Merck is doing its best to restore supplies as soon as possible and sincerely regrets any inconvenience or distress this interruption has caused to the people who rely on SINEMET," the company told the news source. "As previously communicated, the extent of the supply shortage is related to a change in the source of supply and the necessary time needed to obtain regulatory approvals for the change — this varies from country to country."
A Mayo Clinic study, conducted between 2004 and 2006, connected the use of Mirapex to a rise in compulsive behaviors, including gambling.

Par004,
When I saw your post it immediately caught my attention. I work in Whitehouse Station!
hi excuse my spelling im from sweden (:0) ) i was diagnosed with PD in 1995 then i was 42 years old .Was put on Sifrol (Pramipexole) in late 1999 . The initial dose was 0,18 x 6 . Long story made short . During the time into 2010 when i finaly was getting rid of Sifrol folowing happend I divorsed my man after over 20 year of companionship I made 3 suicide atemts .And during the time i developed a gambling dissorder played poker on the net day and nigth . Ive been to hell AND BACK . There is always hope dont forget. :0) :0)
Requip caused gambling problems. I also painted 500 paintings in 2 years. When I stopped Requip I went into a depression and cried for days. I left my husband 2 weeks later.
I took up crocheting, taught myself actually. was obsessed with it. Made many many things, some of them rather beautiful. I guess i could do worse things!!
I am sorry to hear about your relationship with your husband. I considered leaving mine for other reasons though. With the help of my faiht in a higher power i have managed to keep myself from leaving a wonderful man.
I wish you happiness!!
P.s. shopped tll I dropped. now all savings are gone
Don't you hate that? I have a blank canvas waiting for me to put something on it. I always wanted to do a painting of a reclining nude, like they have in bars but I was too shy and broke to employ a live model so I went to some porn sites* to see if I could find The Right Pose [sorry] and spent about two hours looking for The Right Pose with The Right Lighting that wouldn't Offend The Viewer. I never found The Perfect Pose, so I ended up doing The Painting from memory [duh], which was fine, except that I forgot to delete my browsing history and my wife saw it the next day. I think that that cured this particular obsession.
*I always wondered, if porn is supposed to be so evil and illegal, WHY does it exist on The Internet in the first place? [sorry].
I do wonder how much of it is caused by the drugs or how much is the actual Parkinsons...
My husband is the one who has Parkinsons and I am the obsessive one . Although saying that he drives me crazy checking things . . Once somethings comes into his head he worries over and over until I get it fixed or the answer .. BUT , he was like that avery long time before he had Parkinsons but worse now .
I take Mirapex and had a week of conpulsive gambling. I still take Mirapexx and make sure that I do not go to casinos or gamble for money. I still get the urge, but with counseling and knowing what Mirapex can do, I have learned to overcome it and do otherthings until the feeling leaves.
Hi,I am also taking Miraplex ,My playing the Pick It and scatch off's has really really gotten of Control,I am trying my best to curve my Compulsive gambling,I never been a Compulsive person my whole life, my family noticed that I am getting Compulsive with almost everything. It's getting scary.
Caseyjones have you told your neurologist? This behaviour can be devastating on you and your family (i know people who have lost everything, yes everything) please get help now. You will need to reduce miraplex and possibly stop it all together but you should seek medical advice. Hopefully your neuro will be well aware of the compulsive problems for some people on these meds, (if not find another one). You cannot stop this just by trying yourself because it is drug induced..
Thank Hikoi,Yes it is devastating,Because I don't know who this person is and yes it Drug induced,For about 4 days I stopped the Miraplex and was refusing to take it,I use Miraplex to bridge my Sinement dosages,It buys 15 minutes time longer in between dosages,I have Parkinsons now for 12 yrs and take Sinement every 2 hours,I am hoping another Medication can put in place to help with the bridging,I used Comtan,no help,When I did stopped the miraplex felt the wearing off coming on alot sooner,Im pissed in away,To help deal with Parkinson's,Was given this Pill that is going cost me everything,Going to go to therapy,I do have one step in the right direction,I am aware of it,Thank you for your concern and you quick reply,This is a great forum to be part of.Thank you everyone.
Thankyou for sharing. I admire you for going to counseling, that's not an easy thing to do.
ONLY when taking Requip/Mirapex. I was sober and going to meetings so recognized the signs but still could not control. So glad to go off those horrible drugs.
check out the thread "Hypersexuality?? Other compulsive behaviors?"
I was taking Mirapex and developed compulsive sexual fantasizing and related behaviors. My neurologist immediately switched me to Azilect. This troubling compuslion went away, then returned for a while, and has not bothered me for many weeks. I think I'm free from this one.
im on azilect with no side effects but take requip also, i do have some compulsion to the computer where i had none before. im a little ocd about a clean house and yard, more than normal. was on mirapex before and that was worse for me..
I write on paper everything I eat including the caloric value in order to control the compulsive eating.
my restless legs are agonizing unless I can move and that only helps a little. The meds take too long to kick in and don't work at all if I'm limited in movement, for example, being still for a medical procedure. People don't understand the restless legs (RLS) no matter how bad I describe it. The RLS causes problems you wouldn't believe.
Here is an article about restless leg syndrome and magnesium. Magnesium is also good for PD. The only problem with taking Mg is if you have low blood pressure, Myesthemia Gravis or kidney problems:

Another article:

"Magnesium supplementation has been found to be protective in neurotoxicant-induced PD models..."
I don't take Mirapex - only the dopas for the PD. I am allergic to Requip.
I took Requip for 3 years and developed a compulsive shopping disorder. At that time (2000) it wasn't generally known, certainly nothing was published regarding the possibility of developing any compulsive disorder. I bankrupt my family as a result and I am still paying back the debts despite being retired and only receiving Government benefits.
DA's ruined my life and the results will remain with me until I die!!
So sad to hear of your circumstances. Life does hand some shitty blows.I don't know if you are aware but it seems as though there is a class action suit againts the manufacturers of these drug with their known but undisclosed side effectshave
You may be aware already, but I just wanted to mention it to you. As for me I don't think I have any grounds for my Dr. did tell me of these potential side effects. Funny thing I didn't realize I was overindulging till it was too late. No one ever said anything to me, not even my husband!
I wish there was a way to ease your pain. Best wishes to you . If you care to talk further , I 'm always receptive! Be well!
anyone for a video game of Bejeweled? Or how about 5 hours per day ( ok. includes nightime non sleep). It may be free but it steals my time.
When I started taking Requip, I felt the world was upside down. Talking to other PD patients, they told me to bear the blunt. My consultant ignored the side-effects & topped up the dosage each time seeing him. I had compulsive behaviours, such as computer gaming & impulsive sexual urges. Luckily, I was sensible to get myself wean off this medicine. Thanks for the PD forums! I put my faith to Christianity & comon sense. Good luck to all.
Having Parkinson's seems to be my compulsive behavior
I had been taking Mirapex for 2 years when a screwup in my prescription caused me to be off Mirapex for 3 weeks. That's when I realized that I was obsessive about buying broken home theater systems off eBay, repairing them, and giving them to anyone who would take one. I repaired and gave away >80 systems. I didn't see anything weird about this behavior until I stopped taking Mirapex.
Why are you asking about compulsions. It is well known around 17per cent if pwp experience some kind of compulsion . This can be on any of the medications and compulsions come in many different formats . It would be easier to answer if I knew why you were asking . There is so much scaremongering around medication in parkinsons
Yes, I've gained (from compulsive eating and staying at home depression) 50 lbs! Mirapex caused me to have major spending problems, however, I've been off it for five years and all of that is gone. I sleep too much and eat when I'm not hungry. All to the point of compulsive behavior.
Yes gambling
Yes gambling
Hi folks,
I found this forum by searching this specific topic. I'm fortunate to not have PD, but have been treated for severe RLS for over a decade. Up until a year ago, I was on Requip, which started at a lose dose and then gradually increased until I was sent to a neurologist because it was thought I would need a dose that is typically only given to patients with PD. long story short, this new doctor put me on 9mg per day (from a previous 3-4mg per day) and within a month I was blowing every penny I had on gambling. Six months later I had blown through almost $100,000, was massively in debt, my wife left me, I lost my job, my family disowned me, but I couldn't stop. I had no idea it was the Requip. My doctor knew I had a history of alcoholism and thankful I stayed sober, but the addiction to gambling made me steal anything and everything, be arrested, and nearly become homeless. 18 months after that dose increase, my psychiatrist found some articles about the Requip link to impulse control disorders. He recommended I go to my PCP (not my neurologist) and have a different med prescribed. Less than 2 days after I was off Requip, the compulsion was completely gone and it was like a fog has lifted. Unfortunately the damage was more than done. Still picking up the pieces. Bless you all and be careful!
Jerry
No although I crave sweets/lollies/candy/coca cola ( hated it up until 12 months ago)/fizzy drinks and after 50 years of not adding sugar to my cups of tea and coffee, I now need to add 3/4 teaspoons of sugar. I don't drink alcohol often although enjoy a beer 3/4 days a week. Water.....Naah!!!
I have lost weight.
Have to think it's the condition causing this now after 11 years of being on Madopar.
Yes,I had a compulsive shopping experience while being on pramipexole. Never had this happen before. This drug is the only one so far that helped restless legs. Tremor still remains, have Been on ropinerole for 2months and gained 12 pounds
I know this is old but I too suffered from using Requip. I've had PD for 12 years now and until recently stopped using. I was taking 24mgs a day, yes 24mg. I had two types of disorders, spending money and a sexual in nature type that ended my 30 year government career, 20 of those years were active duty Navy. I've been a good boy all my life until this. Want to hear bizarre behavior, I would take pictures of certain women as they walked to their cars after work. I took some videos but what got me was planting a camera under their desks at work. I knew it was very wrong and knew the risks but did it anyway. They found the camera and i turned myself in. I surrender all my hard drives and now I wait, happened 14 July17 .
I never thought my life would end like this. Government retirement gone, now my life savings is gone. Need it to pay bills.
Once my legal things are finished i hope to file a lawsuit with the drug company.
