My Rheumy called me this evening with my test results and has confirmed the diagnosis of RA, which I've been preparing myself for this for awhile now. For now she has started me on Hydroxychloroquine ( Plaquenil) once daily and Vit D 50,000 iu for a low Vit D level. Has anyone had any luck with the Plaquenil? I always get nervous starting new medicines.

l was put on plaquenil it was a drug that took me a long time for my stomach to be able to handle it. I hated the other side effects of the drug it is a drug that they would give you for malaria.
I have taken plaquenil but did not have good results. Doesn't mean it won't work for you. I took maximum dosage of methotrexate with no change. Tried it both by injection and by mouth. Switched docs and am now on sulphalizine and am feeling better. Diagnosed with severe vitamin d deficiency three months ago and am on same dosage of vitamin d that you are. That has made a huge difference in my energy level. Have had RA for 2 years, fibromyalgia for 20 years. Also thyroid problems and sleep apnea. It just takes time to find out what drug works for each individual. Hope you are feeling better soon.
I took hydroxychloroquine for a week, i had every side effect that comes with it. Taking that you need to see your eye doctor when you start taking it, and he will want to monitor your eyesight every year.
Hi Twink, if you are newly diagnosed with RA plaquenil is usually what doctors start you on. Fairly mild side effects (be sure to get eyes checked regularly) and you're able to take it for longer period of times including DMRA's. I've had RA for 50+ years and took plaquenil for over 10 years many years ago. Hang in there and stay on top of your pain and any joint changes...
I was put on Plaquenil only about 6 months ago at the onset of my diagnosis. No problems or RA symptoms I'm sure its not typical but I have no complaints
