my nephew’s results came back. He’s been diagnosed with ibd. It sounds so similar to ibs but it’s is different. We don’t know much about it yet as he’s to see his gp again who will refer to the hospital for more tests. Will he need to change his diet etc? I thought people here will know more so wanted to chat

Who diagnosed an IBD and has he had a colonoscopy ? as only the results of that will confirm IBD.
He shouldn’t change anything until he’s seen a Gastro Consultant and knows what he has and what the treatment will be.
For me diet makes no difference other than I avoid fibre and limit veg and fruit. Once on regular meds IBD is manageable for a lot of people but it can take a while to find the right meds and doses.
His gp diagnosed him after the sample test result from the hospital. He’s referring him to a consultant and they’ll do tests
Is it an colonoscopy he’ll need? 🙈He’s lost so much weight. He’ll need to change his diet slightly we know that because even at the moment certain food affects him
A GP can only suspect IBD so he needs a colonoscopy where the whole bowel can be seen and biopsies will be taken. It’s not a pleasant experience but needs to be done. If he knows certain foods cause problems then yes best to avoid them but resist trying some of the whacky diets that claim to cure IBD, they don’t !
Unless he’s been referred as urgent there could be a long wait for an appt and sometimes it’s worth calling different hospitals to see what the wait lists are like.
Surprisingly he’s been given an appointment at the hospital. Because he was referred as an urgent patient. Don’t know what the consultant with say or do but atleast seeing one is one step closer to getting a being a proper diagnosis of ibd
Hi Junny123,
You can find out more about IBD on the Crohn’s & Colitis UK website (crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/inf.... I found the website really useful when I was first diagnosed. This page also has a good overview of what is typically involved in getting a diagnosis: crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/inf....
If he has lost a lot of weight he may need to be referred to a dietician, the consultant will be able to do this. Hopefully the appointment will come around soon.
Hi Junny123 👋🏻
Just thought I’d check in with you & see how your nephew is getting on? Has he seen the Gastro consultant yet, and if so how did he get on?
Just to back up bantam12, a GP can ‘only’ suspect an IBD diagnosis & the key person/people will be his hospital Gastro team. As citygirl1234 has suggested, take a look at the Crohn’s & Colitis website and their Facebook page too, and if the appointment hasn’t taken place, have a read and put together a list of any questions that you’ve thought of, things that are bugging you, etc. I also find it really helpful to write down all my symptoms (when they started, how severe they are, how they make me feel, etc) before the appointment & then fingers crossed I don’t miss anything! Plus, if I do get a bit flummoxed, the consultant can have a look for themselves! Gives us both a breather 🙂 Finally, make sure you’re all clear on a plan of action - what’s going to be happening next, any tests that might be needed, meds to be started (I always make sure I go over dose, side effects, etc), & always, always, make sure you know how to contact the consultant 🙂
