Hi James. I think it probably more the complications associated with Crohns that could affect life expectancy ie, anorexia, malnutrition, perforation. fortunately as more medications become available the better the IBD seems to be controlled. I think we are a long way off from a cure as there is still no definite cause identified. genes appear to be related but scientists are still working on which exact genes in the genome are responsible, although some have been identified. It is a rough ride with IBD, but supporting each other is important, and making people aware of this invisible disability is vital. I have Crohns from rectum to 10cms within small bowel. Luckily I have not had any ops. Iv had many flare ups but am currently under control with humira. I still have constant aches and loose stools, but im used to it now and its normal for me! i hope this answers your questions. please dont hesitate to ask more questions and also share your experiences with other members x
