CATCH-up-CORNER... SEPTEMBER 1st. 2024... Sorting ourselves out...

Well.... who would have thought it? Here we are on the first meteorological day of Autumn. Now how did that happen?

Pinch Punch First of the Month!

Slip off those running shoes and come on in! Hello!

Here I am, and, I hope, here you are! The cushions are plumped... the coffee is on and I have some super smoothies and some very yummy, quite healthy snacks ready!

So good to see you here after my Summer break and you are all, as ever very welcome.

So.... how is it all going? Have you had any time away...? I have had a breather from the corner and I am feeling recharged and refreshed and raring to go.

I do know, from reading your posts, that many, many of have you been achieving great things with your running, and are making some really great progress too.

Well, the Autumn is upon us and I was thinking... Uh oh...nothing changes!

The seasons for me, have their own little routines attached... Spring Cleaning, Summer Solstice and Winterval wonders; and my very favourite season.. which is this one. Full of colour, sights, sounds, smells and sensations.

Mother Nature's Autumn palette; copper and cadmium, Green-blue and gold. Roseate sunsets, misty mornings.... crisp leaves, crinkle and crunch... Nature's musical accompaniment to my steps. Just bliss. Out comes the warmer wear.., the long sleeve t-shirt and maybe a gilet, for those cooler days...

I could go on, but I risk boring you... so what was I thinking when I rambled off on a limb?

Well. I was thinking... let's shake it up a bit. Summer's over and it is a while until Spring... but why wait... lets have a sort out, now... an Autumn organise...!

Why not? So first off;

Routine

Let's put the sand shoes away...forget the beaches, holiday locations, the lazing around the pool, the BBQ, the summer parties and picnics, maybe a tad too much hedonistic pleasure and let's take a good look at ourselves. Our eating regime, our sleep routine , our gear, and of course... our running!

Small solutions, big benefits.

Variety: the spice of life.

Now, if you are on the C25K programme... you know the plan.... and each run, each week is there for you ! But; you can change routes, you may even be able to change locations. Perhaps you fancy trying to run at a different time of day? Is what you are doing now, working?

On some of your rest days, where you are putting in that strength and stamina work...vary it! Try an exercise you have never done before; focus on a different body part.

Indoor and outdoor cross-training and exercise... a hike in the hills, a forage in the forest a swim on the sea or a ride off-road! All this making you stronger, working out , without the boredom. Shake it up!

Rest and sleep

Summer can take it out of you...unaccustomed heat, the children at home, strange places , and food that may be very different to your normal choices. You want to get back to your routine and you need some good rest and some decent amounts of sleep to help with that. If you are a poor sleeper, then make sure your rest time is just that. Read, relax, paint or potter...music, and musing.

Slow down to move forward.

Target and goal

You are on the C25K programme... you have the goal and the target right there. Follow the plan... your pace, your way, with enjoyment.

But, if you have finished Couch … what next? Find the target that is the right one for you. It may just be , to keep on running... as and when you feel like it, for as long as or as far as you wish. Or, you may want to progress to 10 K, HM or further. Look around check out all the support here on Bridge to 10K and then Beyond. Deciding what is right for you and what you want is the key to all further advancement !

Take a good, long hard look at yourself and your runs

Is what you are doing working for you. Is the way you are running bringing you delight or disappointment,, is it painful or pleasurable, do you endure or enjoy ? Be honest.

When you have answered those questions. Act on the answers.

Lastly, be kind to yourself.

We are all runners. All of us started our running without knowing where we would get to. All of us will have successes and setbacks. We can be our own harshest critic and our own poorest friend.

But, that can change, we can become our own best coach and our own finest running companion. So let's do it. I have this morning, already made a start!

Let's get Autumn organised … to help us face the cooler days and the shortening hours with positivity, with expectation and with enjoyment.

Sit back,. Stay a while and share .

Looking forward to seeing some of you here, and reading your replies.

Hello Oldfloss and running friends, hope you’re enjoying what seems to be the last of the summer!

I’m plodding along, working towards next weekend’s New Forest HM, which I’m intending to walk whenever I need to, but running when I can. I’m hopefully meeting some of our C25K for a meal the night before, which will be good fun.

I’ve also been asked (by a non-running friend) to take part in a walking event in London with her at the end of September, which I’m happy to do. It’s her birthday the week before too, so she’s going to find us a nice restaurant in London for a celebratory meal once we’ve finished!

Other than that, I’m carrying on with my Cardiac Rehab volunteering duties, which I really enjoy. It’s strange that, when you’re doing something voluntarily and without being paid, it seems to be much more fun!

Good luck everyone, whatever you’re doing!

Hello David... here you are and very welcome! Alwyas a cushion here. x

You are set a great goal and a well deserved one too, Walk/run sounds just fine, and I know you are an expert in listening to your body and more importantly heeding what it says.

Your walking event too,,, sounds just so good... a walk with a friend and treat afterwards!

Another goal and your voluntary work, ongoing target and goal, helping other folk to come through some of the issues you faced in your own experiences...

Thank you so much for sharing this with us... and enjoy that special run...we shall watch for your run report xxx

I can't quite believe summer s closing and autumn is opening, I seem to have spent the most of this summer not running, in and out of hospital, but I'm getting better slowly,y arms and legs have shrivelled up and have no strength, I've lost a lot of weight, but I'm full of hope for recovery and a return to walking if not running, enjoy your autumn everyone and thanks Floss for this post, where we can rest a while and recharge as we plan our future dreams

🍏 Catching up with you here Sue. 🤗 Glad 😌 the recovery is happening & you are resting & recharging. At least you have an excuse for eating what you fancy! When at last you are able to do some walking in the Autumn sunshine 🍂 ⛅️ it will feel like heaven. You will definitely get there xx

Eating what you fancy... yes, that is a plus!

You'll get there SueAppleRun because you're body will remember where you once were...in time. My Dad has been poorly for over a year and been in and out of hospital. The last month or so he's been at home all the time and is taking tiny steps each day and each week. He lost 2 st in weight and only now is able to build very gradually back. He will get there and you'll get there and I'll keep checking in to see how you are doing.

Thank you and that's encouraging hearing about your dad, may he continue to progress 😁 I've lost a stone as a half but hoping I've stopped losing now.

That is so true... she will get there... gently does it, step by step. I an sorry about your Dad,,, hopefully slow progress, will be sound progress... it take a while, especially for some of us more seasoned folk ! x

Hello. I thought I would let you sit a while... you have had a rough time and need a bit of a rest.

I am glad that you are feeling a tad better and making progress. Muscle tone loss is hard, and even harder to build back up... i can empathise with you . I am struggling to build it back.

You simply have to try to be patient, but gosh it is slow...:

Those future dreams and the goals ahead... they must seem a long , long way ahead. But, you know.... slow and steady... and you will get there... I know it.

Meantime... rest and recover... the runs will wait, and your cushion is here for you. always x

Thank you Floss, at the moment I'm just happy to be home, but there is fear too that it will get bad again and I'll end up back on th ward. I do a bit each day but it's very hard work xx

Loved reading this Oldfloss I do like to ponder about my running this time of year. What's gone well so far? What's gone not so well? What is ahead of me? How can I get there? It's quite nice being reflective.

I'm fortunate that my consistency has been so strong over the last 5/6 years, which gives me the platform for everything else. Here's hoping the remainder of the year has it's running struggles and celebrations because I need a bit of both 😊

Hello there.... so good to see you here with us...

What a great perspective.... reflective. I like that thought very much. Reflective is a good word... a gentle assessment, a looking at the runs and the way they are going but in a kind way> No regrets... ? Just learning from? I really will be thinking on that word.

You have had some great runs, really and look all set for that to continue. Success and setbacks... struggle and celebration... yes. A balance... it sounds good.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us... pop in again soon, please x

Hi Oldfloss and good to see you back here in the corner again. I’ll have a strawberry smoothie please.

I have been plodding away three times a week throughout the summer, and am now trying to sort myself out a bit, as I felt I was getting slower and slower, and less and less able to go very far at all.

So I’ve dug back in my records (yes I’m that sort of sad nerd) and found I am not doing so badly at all, considering we have had pandemic, and I’ve had some significant health issues over the last four years, so what am I expecting!

I now have a plan. I will do more of the recently discovered C25K+ runs and using the speed and stamina ones gradually increase my distance and speed, with the ultimate aim of achieving the same personal best Parkrun time of 34 minutes from 2019 instead of my current 44 minutes. If I can achieve that by the end of 2024, I will finally feel I have fully recovered!

Plodding on…….

Hello... our small person has just left and I am glad you helped yourself to a smoothie! I am ready for one myself now:)

I think having a record of runs, a diary or log is a great idea... I have all mine since 2015 !

You are able to see how much progress you make and you have done so, so well! The pandemic was a real time for all of us. I call that time, the lost years !

You have had some heath issues too as you say... and come through them... :)

That is a great goal and with a steady build up, I feel it could be a realistic one? Building back to losing 10 minutes... it is going to take a steady , gentle approach, but you have the strength to do that.

The more runs you do, the more it evolves...the longer relaxed runs are the ones which strangely, build everything up... Strength, stamina, distance and yes, eventually, speed.

Thank you so much for calling in and sharing this with us... always a welcome here x

I too have records of past runs but now feel disappointed that I am so much slower than I used to be, no idea why except that menopause hit in between. Perhaps that has had an impact. Anyway, I have now decided speed doesn’t matter, it’s really about getting out 3 times a week to stay healthy. Hoping to be able to work on improving speed or distance come winter, when it is lovely and chilly and my energy returns! Heat and me are not good friends 😂

Hello... I'd love a cup of tea, and I can bring some sandwiches for us all to share... For the first time I tried the Too Good To Go app today and got what was over at Caffè Nero at closing time... To be honest I'm mildly underwhelmed, I was hoping for some of the nice pistachio cheesecake on display, but they must intend to sell it tomorrow!!!

I did week 5 Run 2 today.. I'm getting back into routine... I was chatting recently to someone who is 80 and runs and does Parkrun... So inspiring!

Hello and thanks! Well, you are on track again and you obviously are doing some support exercise... especially if you like cake a lot!!! #

80 years young... yes, a few of us seasoned runners here, showing folk, that age, really is just a number... I did my first HM at 69!

Thank you for popping in !

Morning! My latest revelation (that seems like too strong a word) is simply to take every run as experience and to gain whatever it is that you can learn from it.

I've recently found myself being able to go faster in some of my 5K's and am now struggling to find the best pace at the start of the run. But that will come...

Hello.... well you have got the right idea.

Experience is a great educator and, learning from our successes and our set backs is a skill, well worth acquiring.

Then more we run, the more it all evolves.

Morning, it seems an age since I popped in. The summer has flown by with lots of trips in the campervan, lovely extended gatherings with family and getting the runs in where I can. But it's all worked, my fitness is still increasing along with my V02max, my pace is improving, PBs still coming and my 10k distance well and truly consolidated since HU10 and I'm in a really good place. The plan of 3 to 4 runs per week including a speed intervals session, 5k and 10k just fits really well and keeps variety in the runs. Jetting off in 10 days and will definitely be packing running kit.

Hello and welcome to you! Gosh,,, tin tent trips... wonderful indeed, and family gatherings too... perfect!

Your stats indicate that the holidays and fun have done you a lot of good too! Well done to you... with those results!

You sound as if you have some goals sorted out and... another holiday soon.. or is that a work trip... either way.. you are planning to run!

Thank you so much for popping on and for sharing this with us. You are very welcome here, any time:)
