Good Morning Everyone!

Here I am again... bad penny, turning up! :)

The coffee is on, the juice and smoothies are chilled, and the fresh snacks are out. The Spring cushions are plumped up and ready for this last week in March!

I am up and running, despite the weird weather... I ran my longest run for a while last Sunday....started in sunshine and finished in sleet and hail! But I ran !

The longer runs are waiting...luckily, as I am always, ( boringly), telling everyone, that the runs are patient. They and us waiting for the right moment. Mentally and physically!

Well... I was thinking. Yes, again!

Lying in bed the other morning, I heard the familiar sound of group of friends. Wat was hat group? GEESE!

Flying over my house. There are quite near to me, a few small lakes and ponds on an estate a little way away; and on those lakes... there are a fair few Canada Geese. WE call them, The Lads!.

Well this got my brain working, particularly after reading some replies this last week, about a post I wrote a long while back and, used again a few months back

The thrust of the post was all about SUPPORT. Support for yourself, and support for each other.

Many folk , joining the C25K forum, seem to think, they are doing all this alone. They run, they struggle, they ask questions, (many of which are answered in our pinned post and in the replies from the Admin Team and other runners), but, they do not seem to read those answers, and they carry on struggling.

So here, I go again... with a repeat section of the post, to try and get the message across. You are not on your own !

“Nature and the creatures in it can teach us many things, about many things”.

(The Geese, are incredible role models and if you read this, you may never think of them in the same way again).

“Not overly speedy on the land, ( a bit like me really), indeed, they may appear to cut a slightly comical picture, (unless they are chasing you) ! But when some of the more well known larger varieties of geese take off.... wow...the power, the strength, the determination and the stamina of those geese, is awesome.

I was musing, that it is a tad like we runners, and that led me on to find a bit more out about these creatures; and as I did so, the common features that we, in our running forums here, share with them is really interesting.

So...I'm just going to list a few things that geese are really good at, then leave you to draw your own conclusions about them and us and our running!

* Geese fly further when flying together. Each bird providing , with its wings, uplift for their fellow birds. Team work at all times, ( Supporting each other to reach a common goal).

* Other geese will remain by the side of a goose that is sick or injured. Offering help and protection through those tricky times.( Supporting each other when on the IC).

* Taking turns and giving support to each other, no one bird, leading or out ahead all the time; each bird showing its own individual strengths. ( No comparison between ourselves and any other runner).

* Remaining loyal to their progress, following the same migration route and finishing all together in the same place, ( Following the C25K programme and finishing at that podium).

* Honking to each other through the flight. Encouragement and communication at all times to keep each other going, especially when some of the flock are tiring. ( Posting here, reading the posts, replying to the posts offering advice, tips and support. Literally cheering each other on).

Now, you may at this point that I am completely loopy.... but it is really interesting and it really did make me think about us, running, and about us here on the forum.

We start out, maybe feeling very unsure and lacking in confidence, but coming onto the forum, becoming part of this running family, we are immediately strengthened.

There is always someone in front of us, ( with advice and tips), someone behind us, ( whom we can help with our own tips and advice), and always someone by the side of us, ( sharing our experiences and in turn sharing their own).

How great to be part of this!

There are many new beginners , feeling a tad uncertain and not sure of the way? Well you are, certainly, in the right place here.

There have been some incredible posts too, this last week, with many, many of you reaching that destination of Graduation, ( ready to fly on to new destinations now), but still with support.

Some folk on the Injury Couch, but still receiving support and encouragement from all the posts and replies, on here.

More than a few, who have followed this plan before, have joined us too; they know the way and they know the invaluable support and the wealth of knowledge within the forum.” ME included... you folk keep me in the air!

My point is, whatever stage we are on C25K, we may in reality, be on our own when we run, but we, because of this forum are never, ever alone ! That applies at all levels of our running. Up to 30 minutes running and way, way beyond.

So... come on... pop into the Corner. Grab a cushion, take a snack and share your experiences.

Are you getting the support you need? Do you feel you are on your own here? Could you use some help from a few more 'geese', while you are here? If so, how could we all be more helpful?

The Admin' Team here, are all volunteers. We don't get paid, we are just runners like you, with lives to live; we are not always around exactly, when you need us, ( although some folk do think we work all hours), but at some point, one or more of us will be here to fly alongside you and give you help.

Looking forward to see who does read this and pop in, and to hearing your experiences of the support here, and how you are doing in your running too.

Oldlfloss.

PS

The Lads, just flew over...they say... Good Morning!

🍏Good Morning Oldfloss I am plonking down for a good few minutes because I love this post and want to savour it! The first time I saw the Canadian Geese in Canada I was delighted!!!! It was such a bond with home in the UK! As I do my holiday runs there I can’t help but think of my fellow runners back home as I see them lining up in their formations ready to leave …

I would never have survived C25K when I started without the support of the Admin Staff but also my fellow runners. We formed a bond.. some ahead some behind all helping each other, having a laugh sharing the highs and lows. Graduation was big as we whooped with joy as each of us finished! It would be amazing to see that happening again. Thanks for getting us thinking 🤔 as ever Floss!

Hello .... Welcome... I am so sorry I was not here earlier, my T'ai Chi Class ran over a tad!

I simply cannot imagine seeing Canada Geese where they actually live... what a JOY!

How wonderful when you are there to think, they are flying over here ...back to all your friends.

Your reply does demonstrate perfectly, how this wonderful forum can work... support and friendship, laughter and sometimes a few tears too... but there for each other all the time! Highs and lows indeed, but always someone here to pull you up again... Well done to you !

Thank you so much for popping in... your cushion is always here!

Good morning Floss and fellow runners.. just popping in to say how much I agree with you. I am in my fifth year as a member of this forum. I graduated in the first lockdown, but circumstances, as you know, prevented me from continuing (I’m in week 4 again now). My first runs in 2020 were at silly o'clock in the early morning, in those days when Covid regulations added to self consciousness as a reason to avoid other people. I “ran” around a local car park then progressed to the disused railway line. Nowadays, I even speak to other people sometimes when I’m out trying to run.. so definite progress..🤣🤣

Without this forum, I might well have given up.. So many members post about myriad physical and emotional challenges and setbacks, but still keep turning up and trying again and again. I love your idea that we are like migratory birds, flying away and returning across an ocean of effort, with the encouragement of other members to keep us coming back to the right flight path. 😊

Hello and a welcome to you my friend. Thank you so much for taking the time to come in today and share your experiences.

You have had one heck of a journey... a journey many would have abandoned...but not you. Here you are and here you are too, sharing how you feel about the support here and how it worked for you.

What a time you have had... and the Pandemic runs? How many of us can identify with the early runs, the runs in deserted places and even the runs, round and round a garden! ( me for one).

Your words indicate just how valuable this resource is and how important every single runner is...and we are so glad to have you here with us as a perfect example of the strength and determination that many of our runners, if they but knew it, do possess.

Thank you so much for calling in. I hope a few more folk pop in to read your story. x

I’m so glad you replied.. You reminded me that indeed I did run round and round the garden for the first couple of weeks - so I looked back at Strava to check exactly when.. and found this picture. Of course, it was almost exactly four years ago.. the photo shows our elderly cat sitting in a flower bed, watching me run and no doubt wondering what the heck I was doing.. Sadly we buried him only a couple of weeks ago, not far from where he was sitting then, but you brought to mind a lovely memory of him.

Oh gosh.... I have a Strava image like that too!

What a lovely photo too... Your little cat... still there in the garden... and happy memories indeed.

I remember having to negotiate a newly built rockery... which strangely enough we have just had deconstructed to open up a new access point to a new growing area! Fun eh... we must have cut a pretty picture, going around our gardens! I do know too, that one of forum friends, McFitty , used to run around her garden, even pre pandemic !

Morning Old floss, definitely not alone on this forum have always found support and encouragement through the best and worst of times.

Been very busy so not quite managing all three runs in a week but have been walking as much as possible, still running and my hill that is my nemesis is getting better.

Hello Oldfloss, this is the first time I've posted but have been reading all the lovely posts on this forum as I do the C25K. Week 9 last week. Had a bit of a wobble half way through and didn't finish run 2. I was upset and disappointed in myself but imagined what the lovely, supportive people here would say to me, dusted myself off and went out again a couple of days later and ran (very slightly) better than I'd done before. I graduated on Saturday and was very pleased with myself!! Now to keep going...... Thank you.

The support here is incredible and, at any level of our running...at the start and as we move forward too! Lots of friends there, if you pop across to Bridge to 10K, or just stay around here for a while. getting some lovely consolidation runs in... some short, some 30 minutes and some , see where you get to , runs!

Very well done to you on not giving up! The runs are easy, when they are easy... but when there is a struggle... then that takes real determination...

Now you have popped in, come again... there will be a cushion here for you, any time! x

Hello Floss what a wonderful post and I can so relate to the geese analogy. When I first did the programme in lockdown it was definitely the support advice and encouragement on here that got me through and I would often think about what I would post as I was running.

I’ve been up and down with my running this year so far … work and life have been manic but I think of the runs as the bet of friends who you don’t have to see all the time but when you do you can pick up where you left off ( well not distance wise obvs but the joy of running for sure! )

I’m hoping life will settle down a bit soon and I will be able to get on here more as well as more regularly getting out. I genuinely love to hear people’s journeys and also benefit from the collective wisdom from so many people. 😊

Hello and welcome to you! Take a cushion and sit a while.

Thanks you so much for sharing this... and I love the analogy of runs as, best friends! That is just great! Life certainly does have its ups and its downs, and I do hope that things settle a tad for you. When those runs come, they will be all the sweeter, and it will be good to see you here, and on the forums, posting about them too.

Thank you, for popping in ! x

Hi Oldfloss I thought I’d add my thoughts here if that’s OK 😊 As you know, I now volunteer at Cardiac Rehab sessions following my heart attack and Cardiac Arrest last year. I had a practical competency assessment on Thursday morning, which I’m pleased to say I passed!

I’m also helping a friend from running club to get back into running. This morning we completed week 3 of C25K🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️ and we’re moving onto week 4 over the weekend. I’m going to be away so I’ve had to tell him what he needs to do as ‘homework’ before we meet up again at the end of next week. I’ll be taking my running kit away with me of course, so I’ll be doing homework too! 😉

Hope everyone manages to get out and enjoy whatever sunshine we get 🌞😎🤞

Hi David... so good to see you, and going on from strength to strength... supporting others, in running and in your new role!

You and the geese would get along!

I hope you have a good time and break away, and that any runs you do, even as homework, are enjoyable ones!

I am hoping for sunshine too.. just a small amount would be good... !

Thanks for popping in and sharing... you are always welcome x

Nice to be here. I did my first Park Run in Oban last Saturday. It was undulating to say the least and I did have to walk some but the atmosphere and encouragement was amazing. I’ve joined my local running club and my first time with them last night was hill reps 😱. I didn’t get far up the hill but I gave myself a Pat on the back for trying. I really don’t mind if I’m the slowest or last, I’m just pleased I’m healthy enough to try. I’ve really enjoyed the support on the forum and will continue to read others posts and offer encouragement where I can 👍😜
