CATCH-up-CORNER. NOVEMBER Week 1... Come on in and rest awhile...

November's a time made for fresh air and fun.

For kicking up leaves, as we head out and run..

For dodging the raindrops and beating the cold

For showing the wind that we're brave and we're bold.

****

November's a time for a bit more warm gear

To stay warm and dry, that's perfectly clear.

For making the most of the weather that's fine.

Because Winter is coming, all in good time !

****

White Rabbits!

Hello everyone... !

Here I am again... cushions are plumped up... the morning snacks are ready and waiting...the drinks are hot, or cool if you prefer and there is some lovely fresh fruit this morning too!

I am not sure how Autumnal the weather is where you are, but in Staffs it has run from the first frost to warm days..., and here in Wales yesterday... it was sweatshirt weather as I wandered around Llyn Padarn!

However, here in the UK, the days are getting shorter, the nights are drawing in and Autumn is upon us for sure.

So... this week, (a good week for me... now on Week 6 and about to do Run 3), I have noticed when reading your amazing posts, a few questions or comments about running, as the colder weather creeps in; mainly about what to wear.

Well. first off, as many running clothing sites will advise... we are all, wonderfully different...Each run we do is different... and , weather forecasts can change... !

It is all to do, for many of us with, layers!

Layer up when beginning... and as the run progresses,,, you can peel the layers off! As the weather gets cooler... I make sure my runder-wear, my socks, my leggings and tee are on a radiator waiting for the heating to come on in the morning. I like to put my warm things on so I am warm before leaving.

Put warm feet into my running socks and shoes and they stay warm.

For me, a chilly but not cold, Autumn Day would mean;

*Long leggings

*Long-sleeved tee

*Lightweight showerproof and windproof jacket.

*Buff and Cap.... large brim.. If it is very windy I have one cap with ear flaps... I dislike cold ears..and chilly sinuses !

Now, I am slightly built and as I am not quite carrying enough weight right now, so I do feel chillier than many when I begin, but as I run and warm up... I can peel... buff.... and jacket... and push sleeves up...I rarely feel cold.

( Winter Garb is different. Base layer and the like...That will come in a later post...)

A key factor too as the season continues is visibility... BE SEEN.... Darker mornings, darker days and night running, necessitates High Viz. gear... and there is loads out there at all prices... just shop around.

I have flashing tabs for my shoes.. and high viz. belt... I don't really run at night, but I do have a head-torch.

So, that is me...!

Now... we want to know what you have been up to this last week... where you are on your runs... whether you are a newbie, halfway through, a repeater or just off the injury couch...how is it all going AND...more importantly... have you thought about the colder runs yet. Have you felt chilly yet...

Any gear that you really love for chilly days, anything you are hoping to get or have as an early gift... or are you a shorts and short sleeved tee, hardy runner... ?

Grab a snack and settle down on your cushion... let's share...

Oldfloss x

White rabbits 🐇😄🐇 from a very wet and windy Sussex by the sea. As the leaves fall and water lays my go to kit is my trail shoes that keep my feet dry.....I have all my road shoes lined up gently drying as each and every pair has got somewhat damp lately.

The yellow shower proof jacket comes in handy and so far teamed with shorts because it's not that cold yet.

I'll rest a while in this corner while I plan my next runs, it would be nice to keep dry outside but I'm not sure that will happen for the rest of this week.

Happy November runny folks.

Hello and welcome...your cushion is always here. You are doing so well right now... getting back into the runs! I love the image of all your shoes in a line... drying together, each pair with a story to tell!

I cannot believe you are still in shorts... even the sunshine here would not keep my legs that warm ...long may it continue!

Good idea to ease back and rest,,, the Corner stays open late...friends welcome here at all hours:)

We shall look forward to your posts, when you decide where the running will take you! xxx

No running today as it's wild and wet out there, but there's always lots to do inside 😃xx

Always.... I just need to work out how to avoid housework :) x

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Baking 😁 that's not housework, I guess you could paint? I have some very neglected kitchen walls that need finishing, I'll give that some thought for later, but there's always music, knitting, podcasts 😂😂😂all I've got to do is decide which. I was playing my sax yesterday which is the first time for months, I made a lot of noise and sometimes noise is needed 😂😂😂 x

RunningJ123 profile image
RunningJ123Graduate in reply to SueAppleRun

Ooh cool... The sax would come under lung exercises I'm sure!!

Totally!!! Like singing! I sing loudly...and wonderfully badly! X

Great info!

Did run over the weekend, but this lurgy (or the next) is back (again) and I can only do a few basic exercises. Will run (suitably wrapped) when I'm able!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Gthants

Oh my gosh! That is not good ! Sit and rest here a while... your cushion is ready! Just relax and give yourself time to recover well.

Yes, we are home from Wales and I have to say, it is chillier here than there right now, although Storm Ciaran is set to reach the Welsh Coast later this evening and tomorrow!

I may get a run in on Friday and I think I may be suitably wrapped up too...Keep us posted, please and than you for popping in!

Gthants profile image
Gthants in reply to Oldfloss

I am either getting one cold after another or it's been the same one lingering and recurring for a month. Can't run at the moment. Not up to much exercise either.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Gthants

Oh blimey... I really do empathise... things that hang on are so wearing, and we begin to think we will never feel, 'right' again!

When I head out for my runs, they are so gentle as I still do not want to push myself too hard...

All you can do is be really kind to yourself. eat well, hydrate well and sleep well, if possible... ? Just give it some time... and simply do what you are able, when your body gives you the go-ahead x

Another shout out and invitation to some new friends... hopefully they may start popping In here:)

Good morning Floss! Here I am, popping in to grab a comfy cushion and sit while I drink my morning cuppa.

Although I’m still not running, just thought I’d check in and say that I’ll get back to it eventually when the time is right!

Hope your re-runs are going well!

I woke up thinking it was Friday 🙈 but alas no! 😂 I went to bed early and woke up early, very refreshed with my batteries recharged! Yay!

I will grab a wee morning snack to have with my cuppa, maybe a hot croissant 🥐 xxx

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to ToothPickJafah

Yeay..good to see you here..recharged and refreshed .Coffee and a croissant...all ready...you just have to sit back and chill.

We will get back on track...all in good time x

Hello Oldfloss, and everyone else in Catch up Corner,

I haven’t felt cold on my runs yet, but I am very wary of all the slippery, wet leaves lying in abundance on the ground now. Do you have any tips for negotiating them safely? Many thanks!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Upsidaisy

Hello and welcome...sit right down!Wet leaves! Yes...they are so dangerous...and hard to avoid right now too!

My only tip would be slowing down and walking, which is what I do...

Maybe other folk have ideas...it would be useful!!!

Thanks for popping in...we may get some answers! X

Upsidaisy profile image
UpsidaisyGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Thank you Oldfloss, for your common sense advice! Why didn’t I think of just slowing down and walking through them instead of gingerly running, albeit slowly, and risking a close encounter with them!

That’s what I’ll do from now on, even though it will probably mean more walking than running, as most of the surfaces are now decorated in their autumn colours 🍁😊

Oh good! It is so lovely right now and what better than easing back and taking it all in! x

Hello all! I'll have a nice cup of tea... Nice to hear how everyone is getting on 😊 I've just finished a consolidation run, 30min... It's funny this time again I feel it in my calves... I'm going at a speed I could sustain longer and my breathing is calm really, but just my calves start to get tight and that's what makes it harder to push through! I'll look again at the calf exercises and maybe add a few more.. Maybe I'm missing some vital muscle 😁 or maybe with time they'll get stronger and not complain so much!!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to RunningJ123

Welcome !

Tea is right here.. and sone fresh snacks... your run sounds great... but some calf work needed maybe?

Loads of exercises on here and a massage stick could be in idea... used correctly, they really are super!

The more you run, the more it all evolves.., keep it gentle, shake the runs up a tad and see how it goes...

Pop in again and let us know how it is going please. x

Hi Floss. Coffee and croissants sound good to me (over in the corner with my feet up on the cushion!)

Went out yesterday up my (least) favourite hill. I feel so proud that I can now got over the top, instead of slowing to a walk for those last few metres,so persistence must at last be paying off. I now have to decide which is the best way down the other side, the steeper but shorter route, or the gentler and longer? Maybe alternate each week, as I now insist to myself that the hill will always be a once a week run.

Sticking to the roads in this weather (my shoes are not waterproof, sadly) is making me feel a bit bored with my regular routes. But I am still lacking in the confidence to try further ones I used to enjoy. Maybe I should just set myself a target and do it!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to BarbieW

Here you go...croissants are freshy made... I love them anytime!

WOW !!! Well done you! You saw the hill and you got over it!!! Gentle and longer I would go for... ease your way down... relaxed and happy!

Feet get wet... but they dry.... go on.... try those other routes.... slow and steady...and you are always welcome on your cushion here, to rest up afterwards !

Go on... you can do it:) x

Good evening Oldfloss, might be too late for coffee if I intend to get some sleep, but a cushion is much appreciated.

I was due to start week 9 over the weekend but the lurgy struck and I've been on lemsip (other remedies are available) ever since 😩. Meanwhile the storm has reminded me there are other more important tasks to attend to, such as flood prevention measures and keeping our flock of sheep safe so I guess week 9 can wait until all is well again.

Wishing everyone a safe night and I'll be back for a coffee in the morning!

Welcome x The cushions are here and you can rest before heading off for your chores. Sorry that you've been under par. Not the weather for it!.The run will wait...and so will we. Fresh coffee in the morning will be waiting too. You stay safe and take care xx

Gorgeous picture for a grey and drizzly Friday morning! I can offer coffee and Finnish pastries… I thought it was important to try as many as possible for “research purposes”. My favourite was the cardamom pulla bun which is just off to the right of this picture!

It’s been a super quiet week of runs but I’ve been keeping up with my other activities-I’ve really got in good habits with strength and flex since getting injured and that’s been really successful in recovery. Hopefully I’ll be back in the swing of things soon. Usually a week of consistent running gets me back on track.

This is a tricky time for kit. I keep thinking I’ll be cold and then ending up too hot. Layers all the way! I haven’t managed a full run keeping my thin, reflective jacket on yet! My best piece of kit at the moment is my head torch to see and be seen. You’re so right about the importance of faff at this time of year.

Have a great week! ❤️❤️❤️

I have no idea why I have not had the flag ups for these... ! Hello and ... YUMMMY!

This is all too much... ( not really ) ! WOW!!!!

You seemed to have the layers sorted and yes... being seen is so, so important... You are getting back on track well and I know that you are making sure that you do take care to keep that running body strong... if you don't have too many cardamom, pulla buns...:)

Sit and rest awhile anyway... so good to see you x

I’ve had the same issue with notifications going astray! Glad it’s not just me.

My watch has now pronounced me “productive” again which is a nice little boost. It’s a fickle friend so I’m not putting too much stock in its judgements but I’ll take the positives when they come! Tonight has been another endorphin boosting Zumba class. Great for cardio but also moving everything around in very different ways to running. Always a bonus! Plus she’s added in a whole load of squats and lunges so there’s no getting away from the strength. It feels so much more fun to disco lights and banging tunes though!

Once I get a quiet moment, I’ll be looking up a recipe for those pulla buns. I’m willing to share! ❤️❤️❤️

This sounds exhausting...I'm not sure i could do it?I'm sure everything you work out at us productive..I'm thinking out watches lie..mine says my fitness age is 49! And excellent VoMax!!

Really!

I'd like that recipe please. X

I'm late again! But I'm still here and still running. My shorts have definitely gone away for the year now. So I'm in my leggings, a thin jacket which I had to tie round my waist mid run today, and often gloves too. I have Reynaud's, so it doesn't take much for my extremities to get super cold. I'm not on any running plan just now. I thought it best to consolidate my 10k for a bit, as I can definitely feel the extra toll on my body. That said, I did a comfortable and easy paced 8k today. As you say, slowly does it. So I'll just settle back on the sofa with a cuppa and some off those delicious looking snacks and catch up with everyone.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Sax64

I'm late too and I am not sure why! So sorry!

I get cold fingers especially the ends!!! You sound geared up, and layers on and off as needed, just great...

Going with what your body tells you is the thing... I am listening so hard to my body now! Consolidation too...all good, and shaking the runs up, can all help to ease the impact on the body and give us chance slowly and steadily to build everything back up.

Time for rest too... something I feel many of us need to do more of.. we can ease back, we can rest up and still maintain our running body too., plenty of routine, gentle exercises for us to use too !

So, well done on that 8K... now sit back and enjoy the fresh snacks I have made this afternoon ... great to see you !

It has been awhile! This post made me giggle, because the weather is almost cool enough that I have been thinking about running outside again. I can't wait to do it and get an updated assessment of my fitness :)

Since graduation I have been pretty good at running once or twice a week. Aug/Sept/Oct were disappointing tho, compared to the dedication I had for running Feb to July.

I got a new pair of shoes a few months ago, first since starting, and it was WAY overdue. Next time I will start shopping earlier :)

OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to WhaleSongC

Sorry for this very late welcome!

Yes... cool for you ! You have had a mixed running plan... but, back on track now? I feel we all have these fits and starts sometimes...

New shoes...just great and shopping earlier... absolutely ! Thank you so much for popping in... and let us know how the fitness assessment goes please x
