Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!

YES, YOU CAN!!!!

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

PS. Which app are you using? The NHS/OneYou/BBC app, used by most people here, has eight one minute run intervals in Week 1.

Hey, welcome to your new life journey! As iannodatruffle suggests definitely slow down. I learned that lesson at the beginning and gained nothing but negative thoughts from it.

Leisurely snail pace will see you through and youl feel so good and proud of yourself on run2.

Goodluck

Hello percypound1, You have started well done to you! 🎉🏃🏻‍♂️Running journeys are very personal with lots of choices to make on the way. Slow down as has been suggested and you may find you manage fine. Think of the run as a practice run. Have fun. 😊

Hi Andy. Welcome :) Are you fit enough to walk for 30 mins at a reasonable pace at the moment? The program is for people coming straight from the couch and it is possible, however my opinion is that walking fitness helps when you start to run. If you are, then running speed is probably the key as the others say. We all tried to 'run' when we started (after all, it seems like the point doesn't it?), but soon realise that the only way to keep going is to find a slow jog. There were times in my c25k runs that I felt like I was barely making any forward progress, but as long as one foot is off the ground at any point during the run sections, that still counts. And if you're doing all of that and still struggling, repeat runs (minimum one full day in between runs) until you can, it's all helping to build fitness. Good luck!

Great job in getting off the couch . Don't fret. It sounds to me that you have made a great start but maybe just a little too fast. You may actually jog slower than you normally walk. Try it around your living space ; if it is safe to do so. The thing which caught me out was not enough water , 2.5 litres minimum every day not just running days. It is a pain but so worth the effort , my body loves me for it. ... and works better on runs as a thank you. Good luck you will be just fine.

Take the advice given by IannodaTruffe ...and then..slow and steady at your own pace. Try not to over think...just gentle, light steps. X

Hi Andy,Apologies for my late reply,.

Agree with all the comments you have received.

I too struggled with the first week...and indeed every week after!

But you can do this!

It is not a race.

It’s about you and all those personal gains you will encounter.

Keep plodding.

I’ve stopped coughing after my runs now!

Stay in touch with the group.

Celebrate those achievements!

We’re here for you.

From a very, very overweight (3st) short 62yr wee Scottish woman!

Follow the app and the advice on here. I think I went too fast to start with thinking it would make the time pass quicker, it didn’t, read the guidance watched the video and although only on wk2 feel I’m improving. You got of the couch and out the door the biggest step ever.

Hi Andy, brilliant that you got out there 👍 .

I still can’t do all the runs after 3 weeks so am now just walking after jog 4/5 rather than try then beat myself up every time when I can’t do it.

Everyone suggested I might have been going too fast, I most certainly wasn’t as I was barely moving! Best advice I had was as long as both feet are simultaneously off the ground then it’s a jog regardless of speed.

Stick with it, still better than being on the couch 😁 x

I’m doing it on a treadmill and completed my first run on Monday. Must admit I really wanted to stop at the halfway mark but my foster daughter kept me going with throwing splashes of water at me and playing the Rocky soundtrack 😂. Couldn’t have done it without her. She even videoed the start and saying day one. There’s nothing else I can do now but carry on. Too many people will know if I don’t 😂

Well done and welcome ! Honestly - running for 6 minutes is pretty good going. I found that first minute was honestly the longest minute of my life. But it does get to seem shorter ! I struggle with every run but have begun to find a rhythm now finally in week 6 - I repeated about a third of all the runs I attempted too. I want to get it right and honestly, getting off that couch is a total miracle worker. You did the hardest bit already!

Good advice from everyone and I especially agred with Devon_straggler on being able to walk at a good pace for 30 mins before taking on C25K. You will get there, as many of us have, taking it slow, but sure🐌🐌🐌. I repeated each week at least twice, as for me, I just needed longer to run for the given times 🏃‍♀️and felt more confident and fitter doing this. Each of us have our own journeys and you will find what works best for you. Have fun!!
