Week 7 struggle but not sure why

Hi all, I apologise if this post makes little sense, its hard to explain but I will do my best.

I have just completed week 7 run 2, and this week I have been finding it a real struggle. Up to now, things have been ok, I have done all the runs and not missed any or had to repeat any and on my first 20 min non stop run, I felt really good and enjoyed it and I felt the same on week 6 run 3.

But this week, although I have completed both 25 min runs so far, they seem to be more of a struggle and I don't know why. My routine hasn't changed before a run and my diet has been consistent. But I just seem to struggle. Its not heavy legs and my breathing is controlled, I guess it just feels like low energy like when I first started on week 1. The last few weeks I could start and run 5/8 minutes really comfortably and then the energy starts to drop but nothing too bad, but now it seems a struggle from the start.

Has any one else had this before or have any ideas or advice for things I could change?

I suggest you look at your hydration, but that's all.

However, try to take a medium/long-term and more philosophical view - let's assume you graduate without issue and carry on running regularly for the rest of year and into next. You become a regular runner and identify as one.

3 times a week is about 156 runs in a year and about 800km if you stick to 5k. It's impossible that all 156 runs will feel the same way - you'll have good runs, good weeks and bad runs, bad weeks etc. It happens like that for all sorts of reasons which are very often hard to fathom.

The most important thing is that it becomes a habit - something that you just do as part of your week.

Apart from what's already been suggested, I would also consider perhaps giving yourself another rest day now you are doing the longer continuous runs , They can take some getting used too and you may not be fully recovered from your previous run

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

Everything going on in our lives can impact on our performance as a runner. Restedness, hydration and nutrition are at the top of my list of variables that need to be optimised to enable enjoyable running.

This post expands on the theme. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Perhaps you need longer between runs as they get longer.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

I had the same issue with the 25 minutes run. I think part of it was psychological, but also I had to take 3 days off because of work commitments, and I found that I had more energy on my next run... Worth a try. Good luck. You will feel AMAZING when you complete the programme. Xx

I’ve just finished week 7 and have found it the same! Breathing fine, legs getting tired for me by the end but nothing heavy, just low energy, found on my third run (having repeated one) that I managed to speed up for the last minute, I had nothing left in the tank for run 2.I’ve been thinking of posting similar so thank you for doing it! :)

Thank you all for the replies, I really appreciate it.

I will look at my hydration as that probably does need some improving. But I will also look at the links you guys have shared.

Again many thanks :)

Hiya. I really struggled with week 7 as well and repeated run 3 twice I think. Yes, follow all the advice here, it is invaluable. But one thing I did tell myself is that this is my journey (the dreaded j word) and does it matter if I repeat a run or have 2 days off instead of 1? As long as I keep going that is amazing. And when I did week 4 , I think it was, which seemed a huge jump up from wk 3 I don’t think I would have believed I’d be running for 25 minutes. And whatever is going on You Are Running!
