Aching joints

Hi, For a 50 plus lady who has done little or no exercise most of my life, I decided during lockdown to try Couch to 5k and get fit. I’ve just completed Week 3 and I’m delighted but whilst my stamina has improved greatly my joints are aching when my run - so you think that’s normal, any advice please

Welcome to the forum and well done

on your progress.

Some aches are inevitable but this guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Well done! You can get some aches n pains while doing c25k especially in the early weeks, also feeling so tired, things should get better as you get fitter.

Do some dynamic excercise indoors before warmup walk then stretch legs well afterwards, do as much as you can to warmup well, also hydration can also play a part, so make sure you're drinking enough water..

Oh yes! As a 50 plus lady myself I ached all over at the beginning 😩. It improved gradually as my fitness improved and now 6 months on I hardly ache at all unless I push myself harder than usual.

Take extra rest days between runs if you need them. Sometimes I found 1 day was not enough. Always do pre and post run stretches and take things slowly 🐌. Good luck on Week 4!

As long as it is not painful, think of those aches as the body repairing itself and making you stronger for the next time.

I too.am a shade over 50 & like U decided during lock down to do couch to 5k & after my first run I couldnt cross my legs, my hips ached! My teenage dancer son showed me how to stretch after the run & that has really helped me enormously!

I think for all of us fifty runners it's par for the course, especially for those of us who haven't done any real exercise for a few years.
