When I started out last week on my journey to run, I used the Couch to 5K supported by the BBC coached along by a famous person. I completed day 1 ( consisting of 5min walk, then 1min run and 1 1/2 walk x8, then 5mins walk) but by that afternoon I felt totally broken and then had dreadful pain in my legs for 2 days afterwards(specifically my front thighs ) and lower back, resulting in my dreading the thought of going out again and thinking that maybe it’s wasn’t for me!
But I’m a tough cookie when I want to be...So at this point I thought I’d have another look around for an app that was better suited, as I felt that the original one was a ‘One Size Fits All’ and did a bit more reading on the subject, i found that other Apps take into account your size etc and plan a routine based on that rather than the just download and go I started off with.
I eventually found another app that asked questions before it sent me out running, “ how tall are you? How much do you weigh? How fit do you consider yourself to be?” Etc. And then based on my answers told me that I need to ‘ warm up 1st with a brisk 5 min walk, run 1min walk briskly 1 1/2mins & repeat only 6 times then walk slower 5 mins then complete stretches and recommended the NHS website for post run stretching. Unlike the original App this one tracks your distance and where you have been, and also I personally felt that because it was a nameless voice rather than a Uber fit personality I don’t have to prove myself, and although I’ve done 3 runs so far using the new app I’m not feeling any pressure to move on from Week 1 Day 1, until I’m happy that I can do it without having to dig to deep, and even went out in the rain today!
Ps. I’ve been completing the stretches before I go out too, as i think it helps.
