Max Heart Rate. Male

Hello All,

I've recently managed to run a steady 5k on the treadmill two or three times quite happily but I'm concerned about my Heart Rate. My Max Heart Rate is (220-70) 150. I always warm up for five minutes and cool down for the same amount and when I finish my 36min run I feel great and not exhausted. But my HRM shows my HR to be 155-160 for about 25 min of the run. Should I be worried about this?

How do you feel? How long for your heart rate to return to normal after exercise...Have you had any issues re heart problems etc... ? We are all so different and it would be hard to give sound advice... there is a lot of info online, re-this.. e.g.

Your maximum possible heart rate is generally around 220 minus your age. E,g. a 20-year-old's maximum heart rate would be around 200 beats per minute. Your target heart rate should be 60 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate.

Hi, I did my first Parkrun in 33 mins today with same HR of 155-160 while running and I feel fine. My HR returns to normal quickly so I'll just react to how I feel. Thanks

If you are going to take any notice of an HRM then you owe it to yourself to do some detailed research about heart rates.

The formula for max heart rate gives an average................you may not be average.

For heart rate zones to mean anything, you need to ascertain your true maximum heart rate as opposed to the theoretical.

As Oldfloss says if you feel okay during be after exercise, then you are probably fine.

If you have any doubts, consult your GP.

According to the calculation my max HR should be 168 whereas it is actually 188. I know this because every time I have reached it every fibre in my body has stopped me running Too long in it. Running at total maximum for too long your body will try everything to make you stop. Sometimes if you wait at the end of events you see the runners coming over and throwing up as soon as they do. They are the runners that have been running at maximum a little longer than their bodies actually want. I p, like you was worried that my heart rate was too high, I went to my gp and they sent me for an ecg just to check. I would imagine you just run a little high, quite a few people do.

Don’t worry (provided you feel comfortable whilst running, and don’t feel faint).

Three comments from me:

(1) The research (on soldiers) that produced the 220-age approximation also reported 15% variation. So that old chestnut means that the predicted maximum heart rate is only accurate to about 10-20 beats (provided you are a male aged 20-40). Since you are 70, don’t expect an accurate prediction from 220-age.

(2) Your heart rate is getting measured on a treadmill. You could ask the gym to see the calibration certificate... but you could assume that the HRM is up to 20% wrong.

(3) Maximum heart rate is misleading. It is not the maximum beats per minute that your heart can create. Rather it is the saturated heart rate during peak physical exercise that your heart can sustain. Run 5km at your best ever time, sprint over the line. The maximum heart rate that you measure will be near your max heart rate (allowing for the obvious measurement errors). You’ll know if you got near your MHR as you’ll want to throw up.
