Just starting out

After many years of living a particularly non-active lifestyle except for playing cricket, have just started to think about improving my health and fitness. My target is to be able to run a 5k by end of 2018. Really looking forward to meeting this goal. Any tips, advice and encouragement would be greatly welcomed. Thanks. Steve

Just keep doing it. Some days will feel easy. Other says will feel hard. But keep with the programme and you’ll succeed.

Welcome:)

Check the link out... there is a lot of tried and tested and useful advice there. Good shoes.. socks and you...( Oh and your running gear of course ):)

Take it slow and take it steady.. do not be tempted to push too hard..there are those who have gone too fast, too soon and they disappear.. sadly!

Just follow the plan..keep posting here for huge support and encouragement..( and the odd shove if needed:))

My tips...? Always slow and steady, and start with the non impact stamina and strength exercise on some of your rest days too... it pays dividends:)

Enjoy!!!

Thank you for the welcome and does sound like I will be in good company. Have been for a few small runs so far and do feel that I need to slow my pace down first.

I am really looking forward to meeting my goal and with good advice sure I will do it.

When I started all I could think about was running seemed impossible for me - after all I'm not athletic and I certainly wasn't fit by anyone's standards. What I've learned in 5 weeks is I am a runner - who would have thought it.

Follow the plan and keep slow and steady. It's not about being the fastest or fittest it's about gradually getting your body into a new routine. Honestly best thing I've ever done. You will love it x

Good luck

Thank you for reply Bandit. Well done on doing so well and realising you actually are a runner. It is early days for me and hasnt been easy in this heat.

Indeed I will be taking it slowly to start with. It wont be about the fastest time but will be about achieving my goal 😀

I've become an early morning person - against my better judgement😊 to avoid the heat. Although I am fortunate to live by the sea so it's usually cooler anyways. You will get to that 5k - I intend to might not be in 9 wks - but it will happen. I'm not in a rush - taken me 50 yrs to start getting fit😁

I can’t add anything to the excellent advice given above. Apart from to say I’ve found this forum really supportive. So if you have any niggles or doubts share them here. It’s important to bear in mind we’ve all been where you are today and come through it. Just stick with it (try to enjoy it) and remember we’re all here for you.

Good luck Steve
