Pounding the streets of Sicily......or not

So, I'm back from a stunning ten days in Sicily where I didn't run once. Several reasons

1. It was very, very hot - I have no idea how Hidden manages to run in the Italian heat

2. The pavements were hazardous - I'm incredibly clumsy anyway -if I'd attempted to run on pot-holed, uneven pavements with junctions every 200 metres I fear I'd have been testing out my holiday injury insurance

3. I couldn't fit it in around all the swimming. OK, that's not true either - I didn't really swim that much.

4. I WAS ON HOLIDAY!!!!

I did, at least, do a fair amount of walking, including up some quite steep hills. To get to a pizzeria or gelateria!

And now, after two weeks off running, I will be getting back to it and aiming for a 10k in the spring!

So, what have I missed? Who's completed the programme or got any news to share?

Hello Rebecca! Welcome back. Understand re holiday feeling and heat. I have restarted C25k w Mr Gillma; am throwing in the odd solo 35-min run here and there to prove I can (I can). Feel plateaued but nice view! Enjoying the familiar old structure and learning that intervals are spookily hard work (still). What's your plan for 10k?

I will continue to try and do a Parkrun every week (although work commitments mean I will miss a few weeks) plus another 5k run/walk during the week. I'm going to start running with a beginners group run by a friend of mine - a few weeks into the C25K programme - as I need to increase my own confidence. Once thats complete I'll move up to the "improvers" group and her aim is to get me running a 10k by spring - I'm in her hands really!

Sounds good. My Parkrun plans (Peacehaven) are on hold due to grandparenting. But I will get back there asap as my one experience there was so good.

Donald Trump is still in office..........

I want to go to Sicily...........

If he continues to goad "Rocket Man", one of the most unpredictable dictators in the world, I fear his office will soon be blown into oblivion, along with the majority of North America.

Sicily is amazing - although not a good place to run in any way - and there are bargains to be had. With careful planning and budgeting we spent no more than 300 euros on food - eating out every night for ten nights and with at least one glass of wine with the meal!

In the whole time we were there I only saw two people running!

My daughter spent a couple of years there and was there last week too. We only visited once, but it is an amazing place..............and still has a slight edge, compared to most of Europe.

I didn't run while I was there either, so you are forgiven.

Hi Rebecca...welcome back to Blighty!!! Brrrrr...there'll be some cold runs ahead now...bet you're feeling the cold already?!! Best that you didn't run on those pavements we don't want any horror stories!!! And yes, you were on HOLIDAY!!! Sounds like you've had a good one too?

I'm looking forward to reading your future posts about running 10k...I don't think I'd be able to run that one with you though??!!!!

Well, I never thought I'd be able to run 5k!!!! If I can't manage it, well, nothing ventured, nothing gained..........it's going to take some doing!

Yep, I'm sitting here in long jeans and a sweatshirt for the first time in months. In the whole of our time away, even late at night, I never had to put on a cardigan or anything.

Thanks Oldfloss . I was reading posts but as I only had my phone - no laptop or tablet - I didn't make an appearance. I'm slightly dreading Parkrun on Saturday but I'll do it anyway. It took me a few days of being away before I realised what was missing. Something was. We were having a lovely time, eating, drinking, relaxing and sleeping - but something was missing. Then I realised - I wanted to go for a run! I had taken running stuff but the biggest worry for me was the state of the pavements and having to cross roads full of kamikaze Italian drivers with no indicators! The cars frequently parked on the narrow pavements forcing pedestrians into the road - it was a recipe for disaster! I'll be asking for those 10k tips as soon as I get back on top of my running again - I'm looking forward to cooler runs as we come into autumn although I think one of my weekly runs will have to be on a treadmill because of the dark evenings!

So that's where the heat went.... 12 degrees yesterday.. I understand entirely about not running in that heats also the cobbles and potholes are a trial.

I've been on the IC and then back off again, phew. I met a Kiwi on a cycling twinning trip who also is a volunteer for the Finsbury Park Park Run, so am taking a leaf out of your book and going to do that when I return. MrsT82 is in touching distance of the podium... Mummycav has finally believed she is a runner...

snack_shack graduated too.

rolysmate did his charity run.

Oh Beppe Grillo in Italy is moving towards the right...

oh and we missed you.... So 10k in Spring , should be a walk in the park for superwoman...

Glad you enjoyed Sicily, it's one of my favourite parts of Italy, except for the roads obviously.

Sicily was amazing. My third different Italian holiday and definitely my favourite. Lake Garda was gorgeous but at a bad time in my life, Campania totally ruined by an awful (haunted) villa but Sicily was pretty much perfect. The pizza, the pasta, the gelato, the wine, the Aperol........

I wish I was closer to Finsbury Park - I'd join you. What are you plans next time you are here and when are you here? I know I have a couple of trips to London in the not too distant future.

Glad to hear it was only a short dalliance with the IC - I think we all need a little visit every now and then to remind us that we do need to warm up and stretch.

Oh, and the roads were definitely worse in Campania. I swore I would never drive in Italy again after that - and I never have!!!

and carried on running in Minorca

So back to London mid November ish for a monthish. Can't be precise at the moment as we have to see if we have healthy olives to harvest, if we do it's mid -November if we don't it will be beforehand. Do you a trade - Finsbury Park for Hove! Or the run of your choice...

Roads interesting - Campania frightened me I must admit, and not just because of the professional accident seeking pedestrians...

So glad you had a nice time though because I did wonder about the weather when ours was so rubbish.

Oh and Aperol Spritz really outrageous colour, but it matches my fluoro shorts... and I love it, despite it being fashionable in London a couple of years back and now apparently out of fashion. I don't care I like bright orange drinks - a grown up IrnBru
