Hurt knee 2 weeks in.....any advice greatly appreciated....

Hey! Opening post with a complaint lol!!! Kind of anyways. Started the whole couch-to-5 k thing about 6 weeks ago. Did the first 2 weeks and was happy (as Larry). 2nd last session something 'twinged' in my knee - didn't feel anything at the time, only afterwards. Decided to be sensible and suspend the program. I walk back and forth to my sedentary IT job and clock about 12k steps/day - the walk is about 40 mins each way.

It's been almost 4 weeks since the session where I got the injury. Hard to describe. I'm 48, it's my left knee. It doesn't trouble me most of the time...but during a vigorous walk now, it feels kinda like it needs to be 'clicked out' - a bit weak - not really painful, as such - but occasionally I'll turn and will get a bad pain in the knee that makes the whole leg feel like it's going to give way.

Meh. Guess I'll go see my GP, but am a little pessimistic, because of the nature of it....would really greatly appreciate any advice.....

If you can, see a physio. They should be able to tell you what it is and what caused it so you can prevent it happening again. If you are lucky you will live somewhere with easy access to NHS physio. If not, and you can afford it, find a good sports physio and invest in a session. Doesn't have to mean loads of ongoing treatment necessarily (depending what the issue is). Otherwise you will face a long wait. But make sure you get referred by the GP.

Thank you - seems sensible to me too. Been getting mixed advice from people at work - some suggesting to 'run through it' and hopefully it will pass. But I DID go back out (once) after it happened, and although didn't seem worse, it's still causing (walking) problems after nearly 4 weeks....

Thanks again :)

If it's causing problems walking then definitely don't run through it. If your colleagues are runners they may well give good advice on running technique but unless they are physios I would ignore everything they say about injury. This does sound like injury not just a bit of a niggle. Importantly a physio can advise you on how to stop it coming back.

I had a knee problem a few years ago. Lots of people have the same thing but mine was for a specific reason to do with my leg muscles. It wasn't just about getting rid of the pain. The physio also told me why and what stretches to do to prevent it. It's not come back, not even now I have started running. GP was worse than useless which is why I am such a fan of physios.

Hope you get it sorted soon and are back to running. But don't risk making it worse.

Definitely see a specialist. I had a knee issue (and still sometimes do) and it turned out to be about weak *quads.* Crazy. I do squats every day to strengthen them and it helps. But your knee issue may be different.

Thank you! Been walking 50/60 miles/week for several years - had notions that a bit of light running would be relatively easy, given that - ayeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
