Welcome to the Xmas quest πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„

This is my first quest as team admin so I'm really excited to be doing this with you all πŸ™‚.

Please feel free to join if you've just graduated. Most of us find its a great way to keep, our motivation up.

I find that seeking goals for the next six weeks helps to keep me on track and focussed, and I have little challenges with rewards along the way that give me a boost and keeps the motivation up.

Make it personal to yourself and achievable but as with everything on here have fun with it and enjoy taking part.

What the quest is:-

The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.

The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and strength exercises.

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So, if you wanted to join all you have to do is put:

I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put our longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run.

Good Luck everyone !

Hi ju-ju- . Thank you for inviting us to your first organised quest! I would like to join please.

There are several elements of achievement I'm aiming for:

Complete at least two more Parkruns, hopefully knocking a little off my time.

Extend my furthest run to at least 6.5k

Continue knee strengthening exercises and stretches for glutes, hamstring and quads (listen to me, I had no idea where these muscles were a few months ago)!

Glutes challenge to strengthen: at least 60 double leg bridge, and 30 each single leg bridge per week.

Happy runningπŸ˜ƒπŸƒπŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

To run Christmas Day with my son

To do my ten minutes of core training daily

Where will you run on Christmas day? There are parkruns that run on Xmas day. Over here they put up a Facebook page for the events that do it. I have been doing a double parkrun on New Years Day

Hello ju-ju- !

I had to think long and hard about this, because with the awful weather we've been having, and the pre-Christmas build-up, not to mention being away for Christmas, (you can hear the excuses forming), I wasn't sure about putting extra pressure on myself!

So, I have decided to go for :

1. Get to at least two more parkruns

2. Do some hill-training or Speed every week

3. If the weather really is too vile to get out, then use the exercise bike.

Thanks for doing this, it really helps me keep going!

I think that's realistic and doable too... you can do this :)

Oh, read up on the NestlΓ© boycott and cure yourself of the Quality Street that way!

That's a great pair of goals for the season. I hope you enjoy the strength and flexibility programme - I am very glad I did it, but I found in the end it was easier to do indoors, more predictable availability of props.

I would like to join the quest. Thank you for organising x

I'm aiming to:

* Run in two PRs, one on Christmas Eve (my first ever) and one on New Year's Day

* Help afterwards at the Eve one

* Do some of the strength and flex podcasts

* Run at least twice a week with a view to increasing my stamina and speed

* Post amusing or good things on our forum in the hope that I can spread a little happiness and respond to others to help keep some motivated if I can

Count me in too please. Have really lost the plot the last weeks with the rain and cold - I know I am a woos!! So.... will run three times a week regardless (maybe on the treadmill if it's really bad?) and do at least 2 more parkruns before Christmas. Hope to do Christmas Eve, if only to escape the relatives for a while too! Oh and I started a four week glute challenge today which I intend to follow to the end! Started it a few times but not got beyond week 1 yet!! Back to Laura and Stepping Stones etc at the moment. TBH I still feel a bit lost as to which programme to follow so tend to just get out there and run to my music (when it's not peeing down or blowing a gale that is!!)

I'd like to join the quest, and thank you for setting it up ju-ju- Several parts for me, too. I want to get so I can do the C25k+ Stepping Stones and feel as though I could easily carry on with that 160spm for a bit longer instead of just about doing it as I did today, my first try at it. I also want to have a go at the speed one. I intend to do another parkrun. I think it's going to be quite tricky to keep up 3 runs a week over Christmas but if I say here that I'm aiming to do that there's probably more chance it really will happen :-D

My goals are to

1) improve on my core exercises. Someone mentioned to me that Planks may be a bit tough and should perhaps, not ignore planks, but do glute exercises and others that are a bit easier. (will have to research these).

2) Increase my running time to 45 minutes in this quest.

I'd like to join (if I stay injury free). My goal since completing C25K (or my version which was actually C23.5k) is to run 5k 3 times a week i.e. consolidation using the Stepping stones podcast. I've already started (and not quite reaching) this goal due to some injuries, but is that OK as a goal?

I'd like to join the quest, count on me :) Firstly, thanks for organizing this, it is exactly what I need right now. I usually stop over winter (in the last 3/4 years) finding my self fighting to get back into running for the Belfast marathon in May... This year I have also stopped for a couple of weeks due to a bad fall on a rib and I am recovering, but struggling with running in the winter dark mornings...

As I have always had problems with winter, I will keep it simple.

- I want to run at least 3 times a week (aiming for 4).

- Run at least 15 to 20 miles per week on average (I will start marathon prep after Christmas)

- Finally, this year is the year in which I ran the most. So far 1287 miles. I would like to get to 1,400 by the end of the quest (with an average 20 miles per weeks I should make it).

happy running!!! :)

RunaroundSue profile image
RunaroundSue

I'd like to join, although yesterday I thought I shouldn't as i have actually downgraded my aims a bit.

I plan to continue to do three runs a week, mix and match 5K+, Bridge to 10K and just music of my choice.

But I am finding 45-50 minutes (plus warm up/cool down) to be my optimum time out, probably due to my various local routes.

So I am still doing the B10K podcasts but have renamed it Bridge to 8.04762K (inspired by Irish-John and his 5 mile quest, now ticked off, hooray). If I do more, that's a bonus.

And I would still like to fit in at least one Park Run a month.

But most of all, my quest is to continue to enjoy running.

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply to RunaroundSue

Great that you have joined... and I am so with you there, in the week I have very small windows of opportunities to run. I often just do the Speed podcast or run a mile then do my 10 minutes of core work as its not as long but max benefit. I would focus on the getting out there 3 times a week rather than having high expectations of upping distance ( but do if you can), then you are more likely to achieve it... and I 100% agree... enjoyment is tops :)

in reply to RunaroundSue

I like that idea of a 5 mile quest. I probably won't fit in more than 45 to 50 minutes of running at most each day.

Am running now just calculated 6.2K which is about 4 miles in as they say "Old Money" Going from 6.2K to 8.05 K (5 miles) on my current pace of 9K per hour can get near it. If I ever get to 10k per hour I can do it in 48 minutes.

That education wasn't totally wasted on me after all. Worked that out without having to plug into Cape Canaveral Mainframe !!

I'm in please! My goal is to get my distance up again, first I want to do 10KM to Bait's Bite Lock and back, then 12k which will take me to the old Lime pits - after living in Cambridge for 25 years I only found out about these a little while ago, they look awesome, so I want to go and see for myself! 12 KM will also take me on one of my favourite routes around Grantchester Meadows, there are some awesome routes which are just out of my reach at the moment. 2) run 5k (nearly there as am up to 4.5k) - hopefully will get there on Thursday

I am currently training for a race so am running every other day. it's an early December 10k.

I have another 10k race booked for March 17th ☺ which will keep my nose to the grindstone over winter.

I am walking a lot too! Borrowed dogs R ME! 😊 Walked one this morning and again tomorrow, and take delivery of a pug for 10 days from Thursday, after jog group. I leave the car at home and walk. Much cheaper!

Good luck to my fellow questers πŸ˜ƒ We can do It!

ju-ju- profile image

great goals and no doubt you will hammer those races as ever... I like the doggy plan too :)

Had good run today. Some progress. Set out later than would like about 11. Had to wait for Engineer to sort out problem with Water Meter. Had problems with all utilities since moving. Anyway digressing into "Victor Meldrew 'I don't believe it mode".

First time running in wet , not rain , but a grim heavy drizzle. Wore Cycle jacket which on balance although made me sweat a bit more and meant I wasn't absolutely soaked and bedraggled on finishing ! All experience and overcoming another of natures obstacles !

Stuck to 6K Planed route mainly on canal and my now familiar down at start and up at finish Hill. Last time did hill all the way ran for about 35 minutes to leave me enough puff to get up. This time did full 40 minutes (almost exactly) to do 6K and hill. So some progress.

Also bit more done on glute and plank exercises by managing to remind myself day before run "Hey you numpty don't forget your exercises" which I also add to my shopping list . I wonder what anyone would think of my list , Tea , Sugar, Plank ! , bread, butter, Glutes !

How you gonna get that plank on your bike ? You plank !!

Anyway still happy and still running !

I do want in please... how could I not for ju-ju- 's first Quest?

But really struggling to set the right goals for myself.

So...

1) back to the yoga every day. I'm upping the definition of success to 6 out of 7 days a week on at least 5 of the 6 weeks of the Quest (the other can be 5/7) Sounds complicated but I will know! What I really want is to get back into the habit of it, not just technically ticking the box.

2) By the end of the Quest I will weigh under 68kgs... which won't be about losing much, and there are three family birthdays as well as Christmas, but it will mean doing some exercise and keeping an eye on the calories when not celebrating. The idea being to continue with the gentle downward slope of my weight to get my hip to waist ratio looking healthier without the blip I had last year (I'm already doing better than I thought as I weigh less than I did this time last year)

3) A run a week. Doesn't matter what, and more would be nice.

4) Swim at some point

5) The final, full, podcast from Strength and Flexibility, for old times' sake. Just the once

and 6) cycle... but if I don't achieve this, the Quest will still be counted a success overall as this one depends on other people.

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply to GoogleMe

I love these goals!! Particularly the weight one as that sounds manageable. I know I need to shed some but I can't get below 73kilos so I've decided that's what my body thinks I should be!!!!

in reply to GoogleMe

Like the cycling but why does it depend on other people ?

Hope this doesn't mean you are going to "Chill out" sitting on the back of someone's tandem !!

GoogleMe profile image
GoogleMeGraduate in reply to

Someone else has to load it onto the bike rack for me as it is both heavy and hassly.

I have a friend who used to ride a tandem and it is definitely no chill out - sadly she's now too frail and has sent me her cycle kit so I owe it to her to use it. My bike is electrically assisted and is definitely still exercise - the pedal assist is the difference between being able to go cycling and not for me.

in reply to GoogleMe

That's great. I've also got an electric assisted bike. Occasionally useful for if I do shopping to load on to it. Kill 2 birds with one stone !

Shame about the cake but as they say you can't have your cake and eat it ! Just got to find someone else to eat it for you !!

Please let us know if you do actually get to run Xmas Day ?

I will run somewhere. If we go out on the boat (to the pub !!) I won't have access to the car so won't be able to get to parkrun. I'll just run my normalish route from a different start point.

It depends on the weather. Won't go out boating if it looks like the canal will freeze, wouldn't want to be stuck at the pub for weeks πŸ˜‚ ...seriously last time we got frozen into the marina it was from the end of Nov till the beginning of Feb. Can't have that out on the cut.

Had a good run today did 42 minutes and 6.2K at 5K mark about 32 minutes. Got out early 8am decided not to wait for SUN to come out it wasn't playing today. Forecast said it wouldn't come out till Midday if lucky. So didn't get chance to top up my Costa Del Spaghjetti Junction "TAN" today.

Ran 4 and bit K to work on Thursday (to help get my 3 runs in). May try out those short 4K runs to practice sprinting. Read somewhere actually practicing a few short bursts of even 10 seconds or so can help increase my speed ?

Today Decided to run down one side of lake and up and down canal and back along lake and up my hill. Like to do a there and back route sometimes gives me more accurate measurement with straighter lines on the runjogwalk website. More difficult to plot curvy roughly egg shaped lake laps.

Aim is to get up to 45 minutes at end of quest. Regularly getting up hill. took 20 minutes to get half way then 22 minutes to get back so I still have a consistent pace. given that last 500 metres is running up hill and my pace fades very slightly on my return. Calculated that at flat pace would take about 3 1/2 minutes to get up 500 metre hill but took me extra minute in 4 1/2 minutes.

My core exercises still bit inconsistent but at least doing few minutes on 3 days a week before run. will have to get into routine of doing every day.

Sounds good well done... and yes there is an intervals session you can do that has 10 second bursts... I do it a lot and you can programme it into your garmin. Here is the link: runnersworld.com/peak-perfo...

I hope you find it helpful..
