You have to do it on a PC, you can't do it from an iPad or phone (or at least I couldn't) There are quite comprehensive instructions in the Help section. Good luck!

Not sure about the PC v iPad issue, but on a PC, click on your name on the green bar at the top of the page. Click on Profile. On the right hand side of banner click on Edit Profile and then your banner image and avatar will be available to upload your own images to. There really are too many purple smiley faces on here and I never meet them when I am out running.
