Of course it will as hard as it is to give up once you do you will be sorry you ever started , I'm end stage COPD and when I think of how stupid I was to think I was somehow exsempt from ever getting sick , boy I was only fooling myself , now I'm dealing with constant flar ups and on oxygen 24/7 if u are still at the stage where u don't need it and you still can get around and do things quit now I mean now today , this is a disease that is progressive and it will take your independence ,

Hi MrsGLBj I'm not a smoker and never have smoked but I'm around second hand smoke. I would have to say yes to your question, give up smoking do a pulmonary rehab and keeping exercising this is what the doctor tells me, it helps make the lungs stronger and you should see a change.

Your comment gives me encouragement REWW. I was recently diagnosed with COPD. I'm not on oxygen but have been prescribed inhalers and medications to take via nebulizer. I become winded very easily but can still get around and do my daily chores. I stopped smoking on 9/1/16 and am praying I didn't quit too late. I've smoked for over 40 years (quitting only when I was pregnant but quickly resumed once the children were born). Thank you again and may God give us all healing.

That's great! You quit! I smoked for at least 40 years also! I'm taking tai chi classes. They are helping my breathing immensely

Mine improved by 11% when I stopped smoking. I know of others who had even bigger improvements, especially if they also exercised more.

Pardon my ignorance but I've been only recently diagnosed with COPD. What is FEV1? Thanks, Brenda

FEV1 is a measurement from a PFT (pulmonary function test). The number basically lets you and your pulmonary doctor know what Stage of COPD you are in. my FEV1 is, 22%, meaning I am in stage 4, very severe. Basically means I am operating on only 22% lung capacity.
