Advice on suitable accomodation.

Hi, due to my CMT getting substantially worse. I have been looking at various retirement apartments (I am over 60yrs) but not sure if this would be the right move. I currently live in a large flat in Bournemouth. Any suggestions please.

Hi there

If you're ever in the vicinity of Hengistbury Head, you should pop in and say hello - our office is in the Broadway, in the row of shops there!

But to answer your question, it really depends on what issues you have with your flat now. Is it adaptable to your needs, have you got easy access in and out of it, can the bathroom be adapted (or is it already?). Perhaps making an actual list of the benefits and problems of the flat might be a good way to clear your head, and make a decision.

If the good bits outweigh the bad by a significant amount, perhaps you wouldn't gain enough except headaches and hassle. If its the other way around, then the time to make a move would be now, before you progress anymore, and before you get older, and less likely to want to invite the hassle.

The good bit of living in Bournemouth is that there is probably more retirement accommodation being built than any other kind - near me, in Winkton, there is a whole "village" of "elegant" retirement properties being built on the site of the old Homefield School.

So there is probably plenty of choice - just a matter of finding something suitable that matches your budget.

Hope this helps, and if there is anything else I can do, as I'm nearby, please don't hesitate to email me (info@cmtuk.org.uk) or phone 01202 432048

Regards

Karen

Hi, thats a really difficult issue isnt it? I think if youre unsure you're probably not ready. If its a few things that youre struggling with some things then seeing an occupational therapist might help as they can suggest ways around things you never knew existed. They used to be available from your local social services adults dept but Ive been out of work a while and am not sure if they still do it? There's loads of information on age concern website because there's all sorts of help to stay in your own home now and age concern have things about all aspects of age, they also have a freefone advice line, though you dont sound old at all somehow. I would do a lot more finding out before you make any decision. I think its easy to fall in love with those beautiful retirement flats, especially the show homes, & you wouldnt want to move in then feel it wasnt the right decision.

Hi Spabby girl you are quite right. Most don't have much room to manouver a wheel chair should the need arise. My main concern is the ever increasing utility costs for when I retire.
