Potential Bladder problems
As far as I'm aware, CMT shouldn't cause bladder control problems. Leakage, I regret to say, is part of getting older! Do have a chat with your GP about it, and if you still have a concern that it could down to your CMT, then I would suggest that you get a referral to see your neurologist, who can always refer you onto a bladder specialist if you need one.

Hi Karen,
I understand where you are coming from, however I wouldn't of thought the age factor was going to come into it as I am only 24 and this has been ongoing for a couple of years now.
Ah well, I didn't know that! So definitely speak to your GP and/or neurologist and see what they can find out. It may be a separate unrelated problem that can be sorted out.

I am 37 years old and just recently have been diagnosed with cmt. I'm in the beginning stages (about 10 years since I can recall my first symptoms) of the disease. I have slight deformities in my ankle and arches. I have loss strength in both my legs and now my hands I have noticed. I get electric shocks in my ankle due to the damage to the paraneal nerve. For about 8 or so months now I have noticed the increase to having to urinate very often. This is also accompanied with muscle weakness of the bladder. Almost as soon as I realize I have to be, I am needing to get to the bathroom. I CANNOT hold it more than a minute or two. Whether it's related or not to cmt, I don't know. But, I can't help to agree that is is.
Do you drink a lot of caffeine?
Same for me. I was diagnosed with CMT over 20 years ago. Frequent urination, leakage, and when I have to go, it's like, right now.! A minute or two is it. Is it the CMT.?? I say it's possible. CMT can affect so many different things. Hearing loss is another. Good luck.!
I have bladder trouble ie weakness in the ability to hold it and I pee a lot which your all saying but I would like to point out that peering a lot can be the 1st signs of diabetes so get checked out for that I'd say.
I have had CMT since I was 19 years old and I am now 64 I have had bladder leakage for years now I'm also having bowel leakage I did have a doctor tell me did that this was going to happen the bladder leakage has been going on for years the bowel leakage has just started in the last couple of weeks
I would be interested to learn more about this as well. I had bladder repair over 12 years ago. I started having issues just this year again and have been seeing a urologist and have gone through physical therapy to try to strengthen muscles. While it did help, it hasn't erased the problem. I feel that many doctors, including urologists and gyn doctors may not be as aware of issues related to the disease as a whole. If anyone gets a definitive answer, I'd really like to know as well.
Yes, CMT is well known to give bladder and bowel problems. "unexplained " bouts of constipation or diarrhea, or overactive bladder with all three symptoms, leakage, urgency, and frequency.
Hi. I am 49 years old and have CMT type 2 for many many years now. I am new to the site and after reading through I have just found this thread which has opened my eyes. Like others here, when I need to pee it’s a matter of urgency and need to go asap as I cannot hold it in. I too have leakages and have to go frequently. I don’t drink much caffeine, am T2 diabetic and typically only drink around five drinks a day so I’m ruling out over drinking. I often thought that I was like this due to my age but after reading this I’m now not too sure. I will bring this up with my consultant next time I see him.
