Fat feet
Hi Ulrich Chloe here. You ask about fat feet. Well i can only speak about my own problem on that matter. I have cmt 1a. My feet swellup as soon as i start to get about and summer they swell really bad. I have been told its lymphatic fluid. When i ask how to get this to go down drs say put your feet up. Thats ok if you want to just sit and watch the world go by haha. I want to keep going while i still can with the help of my wheelie walker. One thing though i do find when my feet swell they dont hurt so much! They dont look good but if people dont like it then just dont look haha. X
Hi Chloe, Thanks for you're reply, same here really, we recently bought a house and I've been so busy after 7 years of really doing very little and my feet swelled straight away. I bought some compression socks from Amazon, I find they help me a lot, not comfortable though. All we can do is try and keep going. Have a good summer.
Same to you lets hope we get some nice weather soon. X
I'm currently being treated for lymphedema. Both my ankles and feet plus my right leg are swollen. I don't have any of the usual medical problems that cause it so my CMT may very well be the cause. See a doctor and be treated for your swelling since it's not normal.
Swollen feet and ankles are very common for people with CMT. Part of it is due to our bad circulation. As the weather gets warmer I often have increased issues with swelling. It’s important to drink a lot of water to flush your system out. Some people try water pills but you have to be careful with those because they can make you lose potassium and you need potassium to increase your circulation. You may want to go back to your doctor and ask if there’s any other solution besides putting them up. None of us want to sit around with our feet up but sometimes if we’ve tried any other solution it’s the only one we’re stuck with. Also if your feet are red and hot besides being just swollen you want to have your Dr. check for cellulitis.
Thanks all, noted
Hi, Ulrich,
Apparently a cause of swollen feet and ankles can be too much sitting and physical inactivity. Difficult for some of us to counteract. My R foot is still a lot more swollen than my left, following a total R. hip replacement in December.
How on earth do you get your compression socks on? When I could still just do it they did help quite a lot, but I haven't been able to for some years. I bought a frame-thingy, which would have made it vastly easier to get the socks on my feet - if only i had been able to wrestle them on to the frame first.
Hello Amanita, Oddly I had a total hip replacement (2015) on my right side but its my left foot that swells more besides my feet have been swelling off & on since 2002. I also heard that sitting around does not help but mine comes right in the middle of a busy period. I'm going to see my doctor next week, its a new doctor, he will probably say he's never heard of CMT.
Hi, Ulrich,
Since my new hip i have had the extra swelling and a nasty new stinging sensation my R foot, so assumed it was cause and effect. Oh well, just goes to prove each of us is different.
Good luck with that new doctor.
But I am still curious to know how you manage to get your compression socks on!
My consultant says its because there are tiny little valves in the blood vessels in the feet that usually work when our feet move when walking, they should flex at the toes and instep. Mine don't cos of CMT so the water stays down in the foot ankle & looks puffy.
Thanks for that, I'm seeing my GP on Thursday, probably a waste of time n money.
