Dear Iain,

I have had three operations on my left ankle and two minor ones. Finally it is fused, at the right angle and solid. I am able to drive with it. You get used to feeling the amount of pressure exerted on the pedals through your knees. At first it strains muscles in the thigh but you get used to that too. I'm waiting ofr a fusion on my right ankle now. Good luck with your surgery.

Best wishes,

REGreen

Hi if u need to drive but can't do it with ur ankles maybe think about adapting to hand controls, u will need training but I've seen it before and driven with them. It is quite difficult to start with but in time u should get used to it. I have met a driver who had no. Arms which blew my mind at first but it is poss. Maybe a idea to think about! ?

I had a fusion many years ago(triple athrodesis) my pins have since broken but I will continue as long as possible with them,I drive an automatic car now instead of manual one I would be devastated if I had to give up driving. My two daughters have had ankle surgery and no doubt I will again some time,I was twelve when I had my first one and now I'm coming up to seventy with lots of surgery in between,I fall a lot but still here.

Good luck

I have a severe type of CMT and have never had enough control over my feet. I drive with a set of hand controls that attach to the petals. They can be put on any type of vehicle and cost approximately $800 US dollars. They are good because some who uses their feet can still drive but it gives me my freedom. My controls are for both gas and brake but you can also get them for just one if you only have weakness on one side.

I had an ankle fusion about six years ago (right foot) and don’t have any issues with driving. As someone else said, I drive from the knee/hip and it’s not problem at all.
