I had bad stomach pain with venetoclax and no appetite. I had to quit and just stay on calquence. I am getting fairly close to mrd negative, so I wonder if the few months I was able to stay on venetoclax still helped.
I was eventually diagnosed with an h pylori infection. Did the venetoclax mess with my normal stomach bacteria and allow the h pylori to set in? Was the h pylori causing my stomach pain alone or in combination with the venetoclax? Could I have restarted the venetoclax and not had the same problems? Was the h pylori unrelated to my cll? No one knows.
I know I waited too long to see a gastroenterologist and get worked up to see what was what. In your case I would observe that while venetoclax with its history of causing stomach problems might be the prime suspect in your stomach issues, you cannot really be sure since many illnesses cause stomach pain and you likely do have a compromised immune system, as we all do.
You might consider asking your Cll doctor if you should pause venetoclax and see if your stomach improves. You might also consider having a gastroenterologist work you up. One easy thing that can be done is a simple stool sample which your gp or Cll doctor could order. That could help rule out some bug. I was quite surprised, as were my doctors, when my sample was positive for h pylori. It was actually a relief to find out I had something treatable and that all my docs knew I wasnt making it up.
Good luck to you. I’m not qualified to give advice but I can say that I wish I would have gotten a stomach workup many months before I did.
The V nausea has gotten a little worse after my first year on it. The nausea had occasionally been an issue but is now more frequent especially if I am not careful what I eat when I take the V. I also have more GI symptoms than the first year. The onc doc is aware and doesn't seem too concerned... just he promotes more meds to deal with the symptoms.
I agree with Cajun Jeff - I think if you do get a gut infection, Venclexta can irritate it. A workup is needed to deal with the gut infection or problem, and not just assume it's only the Venclexta. A Venclexta dose reduction might also help, but the workup is needed in any case.
Venetoclax caused 24/7 nausea for me. It was really bad even at the lower dosage that my doctor prescribed. But what was worse was every time I’ve tried to take it, I get a respiratory infection. First time I had a serious sinus infection, and had to stop. This second time I tried taking it I was fine on the day I started, next day after taking it I woke up with a bad cough and tight chest. It just kept getting worse and I felt I was headed towards pneumonia , so I stopped taking it. And in two to three days my cough was stopping and my chest loosened up. I don’t think I can take Ventetoclax safely 😔
The first day I went to Venetoclax 400 mg, I took it after lunch, and within an hour I had the most violent vomiting I've ever had in my life. I have always taken it with food like I supposed to but that 400 mg dose was hard on my stomach and I had to take a Zofran a lot and just lay very still for about an hour. This would happen 3 to 4 hours after I took it usually. After a little over a year, I went down to 300 mg daily and now I only have them once in a while, the nausea, so I don't know. Maybe it depends on how much fat in the meal you eat or something.
