Paxlovid

My wife and I are planning on taking a driving trip next month. I am thinking about asking my CLL specialist for Paxlovid when I see him next week to have when I am on my trip in case I do get Covid.

Has anyone been successful in getting paxlovid before needing it? Are Dr.'s willing to do this?

Thanks,

Bill1288

my CLL Doc explained that a positive test must be shown befor a doc / pharmacy can prescribe Paxlovid. We were extremely careful masking indoors and esp plane and did fine thankfully.

Also ck the country you’re going to if u do get Covid , and see if paxlovid is available there .

Good luck

glad you have a road trip planned. I was able to get a prescription from my cll dr before I left for a vacation. My husband was turned down by three drs but got it from a 4th just before we left. The 4th had kept him waiting for two hours so my husband said the least you can do is give me a Paxlovid prescription. Honestly I don’t why it’s so hard to get it. It can be rough on livers so maybe drs want to be careful for anyone with liver issues. Anyway, yes, get it and have more peace of mind on your trip. Have fun!

Hi Bill1288,

I tried a few times to get Paxlovid in advance and was turned down by a Doctor that I know well and we trust each other. He said the FDA guidelines required a positive test before he could prescribe.

Then this came out about one month ago: fda.gov/media/155050/download

The FDA updated the Emergency Use Authorization Fact Sheet for Paxlovid. It is no longer a requirement for an individual to have already tested positive for COVID-19 for their healthcare provider to prescribe them Paxlovid.

He issued the script and asked me to notify him if I test positive and start taking the Paxlovid. Since I am on Calquence, I suspect he is as concerned about stopping Calquence as he is about starting Paxlovid.

Len: Thank you for your reply. You are probably right about his thoughts about Calquence and Paxlovid. I did have covid in latter part of last year and am on Calquence. Was told to stop taking while on Paxlovid. Will definitely talk to my Dr. next week. Thank you so much for info. I also take Eliquis for AFIB, and it was reduced to half dose the five days on paxlovid,so understand the concerns Doctors have in prescribing paxlovid. With saying all that, it would put me more at ease having with me when traveling.

Like you I was trying to be super prepared for Europe trip last year. Yes I certainly could have a prescription but as I didn’t have currently Covid the script would be private at $1400. I went without. Didn’t catch Covid in four countries visited. But caught it again within six weeks on return to Australia. One phone call to GP I had the drug within an hour.

Hi Bill

Just managed to buy Enovid via buyenov.com/ since it’s supposed to kill 99.9% viruses; I would use it prophylactically in case I had to be in a crowded place. I paid $135 for 3 bottles and received 6’s instead. Expiry is Jan 2024.

I spoke with an Infectious Disease doctor about this stuff.......... it doesn't work. May I refer you to an earlier post regarding Rev. Peter Popoff, an American TV evangelist, who will send you a small packet of Miracle Spring Water for a lot less money.

Thanks DanBro, I bought it based on “hearsay” that FDA requires Israeli company to conduct the trial in USA. It’s approved in Singapore & sold as OTC under VirX brand.

Good to have another view.

I have heard some people getting their drs to give a prescription for that purpose. But it ain’t easy to get. In my opinion this should be a no brained.

Hi Bill. I went on a trip last May and was very concerned about Covid. I contacted my Dr and had a back up plan for ‘just in case’. I was only going to one destination on my trip so I found the pharmacy’s that were in that area that would allow my Dr to call in a script of Paxlovid for me. Luckily I did not need it on that trip but I did get Covid later in August and took Paxlovid. I am not sure where you live but in my area of the US our CVS stores can now issue Paxlovid. A lot of pharmacies now offer many services besides just dolling out scripts. Good Luck 🍀

JLJC: Thanks for your reply. If I do not get will definitely look for local pharmacy so I will be prepared if needed.

Got Paxalovid from doc some months ago. Having the mediction was crucial in starting it early when i did get Covid. I attribute pretty good recovery to taking it early.

Actually i waited till test was positive. Next time would start as soon as i get credible symptoms.

The medication works by slowing down replication of virus, it does not kill virus. So the quicker you start, the better. contrary wise, taken late the virus has already multiplied beyond being much affected.

Am going to ask for another prescription before next significant trip. Bearing in mind that the medication expires if about 6 months. So important not to keep it hanging around too long.

The world has moved on from Covid, we have to protect the best we can.

Lenny123: Thank you for your reply. Yes. I feel that we are on our own, so must protect ourselves. Last year when I traveled, I felt better having the evusheld. But feel vulnerable this year for sure.

Bill1288, thanks for your post. I've been wanting to get out in the world while I'm still in w & w. Of course, I'm afraid too. It makes sense to enjoy life while I still feel pretty much ok...Mentally getting drained by this diagnosis. I get daily exercise and am shoveling snow like crazy ( thanks to Mother Nature). Getting back out in the world is what I need...Eventually, I'll get covid. It's probably better to get it now enjoying life than later wishing I had gotten out there while I still had the chance. My doc won't prescribe Paxlovid without disease. He wouldn't even allow Evusheld. I'm thinking getting a small motor home to limit exposures & following the usual precautions will have to do. Thanks for posting.

Stamphappy: You are welcome. Sooner or later you just have to go for it. I feel like I have to move on for my wife. She has been so supportive of me and I owe it to her to do the best I can to prepare for the worst and get out their. Saying that it is a daunting feeling. But one to overcome. Best to you. All the people on this site really help so you do not feel alone in this endeavor.

Thanks, Bill. That's exactly how I feel about my husband. For his mental health, I've even thought about telling him to go out West without me. He always wanted to do that. He's not good about masking, so to travel with him is just to stressful of a thought. I'm feeling so trapped. I'm thinking I'll have to get "out there" anyway or I'm gonna crack up. Take care.
